The content is the reason I have this app. I've been using it for two years and the downside is that it's glitchy. The lastest glitch is whenever I receive a notification (including the app itself) one minute later the playback stops and I have to press the play button twice to get it to play again. It's really annoying.
This app is so frustrating, it stops randomly on its own or when I get a notification. WHY!?!? There is a reason I choose audio. The purpose is defeated when I have to constantly get my phone out open the app and start it again. Extremely frustrating! I love the content but seriously why haven't you fixed this? This is not a new issue according to other reviews.
The audiobook interface for this app is AWFUL. - You cannot rewind 30 seconds from the menu bar, you have to open the app (unlocking your phone). - If you rewind 30 seconds more than once it restarts the chapter. - Playback contains prompts to change the CD. - I keep getting a message to re-download a chapter, I dare you to figure out how to do that. I only use this for audiobooks, and it makes me crazy that software works this poorly.
Incredible app with incredible content. Amazing selection, good price for the inspiration, and a wealth of app features that all work well and make it so easy to use. I have no complaints! Somebody put a lot of thought into this app. Thank you for this treasure and the content it makes easily accessible!
Love the app. I have an android phone. My biggest issue is that when listening to audio book on Android Auto, there is no way to rewind by a few seconds. Also, it doesn't save the place I was last listening too, so when I get back in my car, it always starts the whole chapter over. I got tired of listening to the same chapter over and over, so I've stopped using the app. Would love these fixes. For reading, it works just as good as any app.
I love Bookshelf and use it constantly. It would be beyond 5 stars, but the app doesn't work well when I'm connected to anything via Bluetooth. When I pause it on a speaker or headphones, if I don't press play again soon enough is like the app forgot it was playing and I cannot play it again. I have to use my phone. It's not a huge deal and I've been living with it for a while, but Bluetooth usually means I either can't use my phone (driving) or I'm not right next to it.
App works well, I just find it lacking in user friendliness. I am a longtime Audible user, and I switched to DB for the content, but I miss the format of Audible. I greatly dislike how each chapter is a separate audio file. I prefer to have the whole book as a file with the option to jump to specific chapters. I don't like how you can't see which books are downloaded to your device. I wish the books were marked "finished" after I was done. If the app had a better interface it would be 5⭐
the audio player is problematic. it randomly skips ahead, or stops, or delays. and if you accidentally touch the screen, you'll end up in another chapter. they need a lock down screen. but the biggest issue is the lack of compatibility with bluetooth headsets and car dashboards. on other players, a long hold or tap of the back arrow brings you back 10, 20, 30 or 60 seconds. but with the Bookshelf app, hitting the back arrow brings you to the beginning of the entire chapter. this is frustrating!
I love this app! I have learned so much from what I've listened to. It seems like they are adding more content all the time. I am giving 4 stars because I think it could use continued upgrades on simplifying user function. For instance, it's hard to find the next episode of "Sunday on Monday" because the app does not display them in a chronological list, they are all jumbled and it would be helpful if they were in the same folder or something and not all spread out. Still a great app!
I love the content, but have had serious issues with the app. The books don't always download all the way, and then the books start streaming which takes an excessive amount of data. I have no way of knowing if it's downloaded or not. On the flip side, books take so much memory on my device. There are other quirks, but those are the most frustrating issues for me.
This is super glitchy. I appreciate the reading materials immensely, but it doesn't save your position in audiobooks. If you hit play when you've already finished part of a chapter, it doesn't start where you left off. It automatically starts the chapter over. It randomly dies for no spent reason, also, in the middle of audiobooks. Get it together, please!
At first it was great! I listened to loads of great books while I worked at home. Now it's annoying beyond barring! It stopped playing randomly! It's not only when I get a notification, it's whenever I don't have hands to turn it back on! I wish I could go back and not update this app because the update broke it! I still love the content though. Finding great authors can be hard but with this app I don't worry that the content will be uncomfortable for my kids to walk in on. Please fix it!
I have had bookshelf for several years. Lately though I am running into a problem with finding more books to read. If you click on the related button nothing shows up. I used to be able to find similar books with the same content this way, but it no longer works. Please fix this issue! I have uninstalled and reinstalled this app in hopes of it working again, but sadly it does not.
I want to love this app, and I do, but I'm getting really frustrated with the audio books. For no reason they'll keep stopping, even when downloaded. Every time I have to go into the app and hit the play/pause button even though it's showing that it's still playing. Sometimes it's once. Sometimes it's 10 times a chapter. Really annoying. Especially when driving. I can't find a way to connect support in the app. I would also love to be able to cast audio books to Google.
Great content, but SOOOO many glitches. The search feature is not at all what I would hope for. I want to be able to search and filter... not really possible. Lots of available audiobooks don't even show up on the app as you browse. If it were a free app, I would figure I get what I paid for, but I'm actually paying for it!! Not great.
Overall it's pretty good. I would like the annotation features to be more user-friendly. My main issues with it are: 1) page numbers do not correspond with page numbers in print book. when I want to look up a quote from a different work I cannot find the page number so it takes me awhile to find the quote in the app. 2) I would like to be able to organize my library into collections instead of having to search through my entire library for a certain topic.
First it would stop a bit after each phone call, text, etc.. Now if don't have Internet/cell service it stops at each chapter and once or twice inside the chapter. Very annoying and not helpful fo driving home through the mountains and back country where cell coverage is spotty or non existent. Really hard to stay awake when the story stops at each chapter. My previous review was a 3. Now it's a 2. Developers said they are working on figuring it out . Actually had a new book that was working.
