When I press the speaker icon to hear the word being pronounced nothing happens. I have to tap it several times before it eventually works. Maybe it needs time to "warm up" 05/08/22 Now when I press the button to hear the spoken word I get the last part of the word. The first syllable is not heard. I have to hit it 3-4 times before I hear the full word. Sent an email. Let's see if I hear back. Otherwise, I'll just uninstall and find another dictionary.
I've been using this dictionary app for a long time now. Absolutely flawless. 'Ve recommended to many, recommending here also. Ads is an issue with every other app, though not a big issue here that is. We can also go for premium version which is quite nominal.
Great app but it'd be awesome if it could be used in a landscape orientation. It becomes tedious to switch from reading a pdf in landscape to looking up a word in portrait and then switching back.
One of the greatest English dictionaries ever made by a human being. Very professional, concise and accurate. The examples provided are of great help. They don't clutter the mind, are to-the-point and topic-related. Many usage examples are from famous writers, authoratitave journalists and great politicians. My favorite English dictionary of all times. Thank you so much developers for your efforts. Only one thing I wish is adding the settings button to be able to change the interface color.
Living with limited dexterity, I find it extremely frustrating that accidentally tapping words, even those not underlined, immediately refreshes the page to a new definition. So, in the gratifying process of expanding my vocabulary, I suddenly find myself looking at the definition of an article or a preposition, for ex. I would pay to use the app apart from a glitchy behavior that renders the app inaccessible to me. My touchscreen sensitivity settings are otherwise appropriate.
I have a suggestion. Make the app significantly larger by allowing a string of searches. If im on a page and see a word in my definition that i dont know, i can use the feature of instantly seeing the definition by tapping the word. But i need to return to the previous word quickly to reference the second definition to the first. Otherwise im very satisfied.
Handy for quick definitions while reading, watching TV, or during presentations, etc. Great app for those who want to increase their vocabulary knowledge.
The ads make experience terrible and it surprisingly doesn't have many rare words and certainly doesn't have any newer words. I will delete when I find a better one.
The ads are incredibly intrusive and often play at loud volume. Surely there are better ads to match the experience of looking up words in the dictionary.
This is a great useful app created by America's leading dictionary, oss. Thing is I am used to Merriam-Webster as it is what I grew up with, why on earth does a dictionary need ads? If you want to make a bit of money, which is the point of anything, then have a first time purchase, then you have a straight dictionary, and as you update editions, then you in app purchase the new edition for whatever amount of money. Making it optional. I dont need underwear ads while searching for definitions
Very helpful and easy to use. Also love the games they make learning fun, I'm a little addicted. Great for kids, my 12 year old will play with me (a feat in it's self lol). The only thing I think could make it better is if we could have the ability to add a second player to the games. There is something about some healthy competition that can help teenagers engage more. At least in my house. 🤪 Also I feel that it helps with keeping a sharp mind.
I love this app it has lots of great features but the fonts makes it looks like it's way too cramped up. It makes me confused into which one is the certain right definition. Maybe it's just a problem with my eye sight but it is indeed jammed up in one space. For first timers this can tend to be confusing.
Split screen would be a FANTASTIC feature addition. You could look up words you've written in a notepad without jumping from app to app constantly. Otherwise, fantastic!
The app logs you out and when you logged in again all the words you saved have been deleted or erased from that list. I paid for a yearly subscription for no ads and the app loses my saved words list which is supposed to be saved. What is the purpose of having that option if the app removes them. I am very disappointed in this situation and hope that others are not experiencing this issue as I am. Overall the app works as intended. The reason for the rating because of the issue I described.
Terrible app, and honestly their dictionary can be adjusted not by use of language but forced changes by random petitions. Doesn't make any sense to change definitions from what people actually already use of the word.
I don't know who decided to approve FULL VOLUME ADS for this app, but if I look up one more definition at work and have music blast out of my phone, I'm removing this app.
It fails to put the definitions in the simplest possible words. It uses words from the same level of complexity in the definition as the the word being defined, which defeats the purpose. The reader is forced to jump from one unknown word to another, thus getting lost. Ex: "impetuous" defined as "impulsive vehemence," "vehemence" defined by the "state of being vehement," "vehement" defined as "marked by forceful energy." To understand the definition of "impetuous" I have to look up 2 more words!
I wish We could use the app during split Screen soon.. There are words we would like to search while watching movie and caught a new word to seArch.
Love it, thank you! With my health issues, I am grateful to be able have this to use, much apreciated. I have memory issues, forgetting how to spell simple words is frustrating, this is a huge help!
I love this app. Much better than the Oxford which was surprisingly full of ads and offered less information. I've used Merriam Webster before and it's my go-to. Less ads, lots of information including a thesaurus.
Very handy, useful and reliable application; I am truly satisfied. The audio link for pronunciation is a very good help, but sometimes it goes non-responsive, may be due to server overload, which is rectifiable.
Overall it's good but I have observed that this app version of the dictionary is missing some of the words. Take the word "procacious" for example; when I searched for the meaning of this word in the app it showed no results.
Very enjoyable experience overall, with friendly interface, dark mode and most of the functionality of the website. Recently had to fix up something with the subscription fee - support is beyond highest praise, swift and professional.
The dictionary is not as prolific and comprehensive as Oxfords but the subscription price, user interface, and games make it a much better app. Love this app and even on the free version, the ads aren't pervasive.
Suggestion: Helpful images are provided with words. Very concise and useful dictionary definitions alongside several sentence examples, variants, synonyms & antonyms, functions, first known use, and history & etymology. Moreover, this app includes a "Word of the Day" and dictionary games which develop vocabulary! This app is a must have for anyone!
This is my favorite dictionary. It is excellent, just the best. Big thanks to the developers. However, i wish you could add pictures to the definations, providing photos of fruits, animals, birds, etc in their definations.
It's a commonly decent app. Good for basic to low level dictionary usage, but there are many words that are not defined (very upsetting). Just now I wanted to look up "disperate", but yet again, it says "word not found". Saddly, this is the 3rd time this has happened in 2-3 months. I'd say that's subpar for a Dictionary!
I downloaded the top few dictionary apps, turned off all wifi/data and launched them all for the first time. This one works offline (even the games; however, the pronunciation audio clips require an online connection), links to synonymous and antonymous words work effortlessly, and the app doesn't require you to register to use it (*ahem oxford*). Overall, I'd say this one is currently miles better than the rest. I will say, the ads popping up every now and then are a bit of a nuisance though.
