Fantastic app if you want something that addresses the intricacies of DOF often overlooked by other apps, namely circle of confusion (other apps assume an arbitrary setting) and diffraction (other apps ignore). But if you just want a simple DOF calculator, this isn't it. Only two negatives: You have to type in your camera's specs (sensor size and resolution), and there's a bug that makes it tricky to save them. Here's what worked for me: Go into your phone's settings, then apps, then the DoF app, then "permissions" and turn OFF storage. Then open the app. It will ask for permission to access storage. DECLINE. Close app and go back into your phone's settings and turn storage back ON. Then open app again. I was then able to save camera settings. The sliders take some getting used to. What isn't immediately clear is that you can pinch zoom the focal length, distance and blur, which makes it much easier. Pinch zoom distance on the right side of the slider. If depth of field decreases to zero, it's not a bug, it's diffraction! The aperture is too narrow/blur tolerance too low.
Unique. Brillant. Complicated. I would gladly pay for this program. There's simply too much going on in this program to figure out without Reading The Friendly Manual. My advice: Read The Friendly Manual. It is well organized, well written, and complete. Here's a tip: open a text editor and save your camera settings to a file, in case they get lost.
Needs interface work. The aperture and distance scales are hard to use because the cursor moves under your finger when touched, thus becoming obscured. I would change these two scales such that touching anywhere on the scale gains control of the cursor allowing it to be moved without hiding it. Also I got past the save camera data bug but not sure exactly how. The dev references an earlier post on the subject which I couldn't find.
Unusable for me. Great concept, but UI/UX is poor. I installed this looking for a DoF calculator, meaning i want to clearly see the calculated values; nearly-infinite color scales and hash marks are not helpful. Can't enter a value to be calculated, instead have to sloppily slide a scale back and forth, experimenting. I've read the instructions 3 or 4 times, but can't get it to behave as described.
Works well on Windows and is feature rich as described by other reviews; but, on Android (v6 in my case) the suggested workarounds for saving new camera profiles do not work. Still no Save or Apply button, but I can see the new profile using Next and Prev links during efiting. Sadly, all new edits disappear when I shut the app down and restart. Please, Jonathon, find a fix! Update: Moved from 3 to 5 with Jonathon's news that this feature was now working! Thanks, Jonathon.
i can edit the camera model from the default 35mm sharp print, but they is no save button and it refers back to the default. going back to the main screen the changes are not there. useless.
Want to like this, but it's flawed. I can't save new cameras, and it's not to do with permissions as one of the other reviews suggests. Interface is brilliant.
I'm... Very impressed. It's indeed complicated but definitely worth every minute you put to understand it. Sadly, there are some flaws with saving options. Hopefully developer will fix it soon :)
Does not work. Will not remember camera, settings and has no list of cameras. There is no way to enter distance as the app defaults to 4 (four) feet. Deleted the app as it is worthless.
Fantastic app, best of breed for finding the best manual settings for sharp photos. An excellent tool for those of us who shoot with manual settings and for those of us who use focus stacking.
No camera list. Details are far to many to enter you camera manually. And you cannot select the sensor size. You need to be a very technical person to use this app.
Good to see someone including diffraction. Not 5 stars because the blur figure is not well defined. Best dof app I've come across though.
Do not bother downloading this app. Does not give any sensible readings after setting your camera details up. Mind you you can get it to give any reading you want by sliding the blur slider up and down? What is that all about? Terrible app!
Has absolutely no way to add cameras to its "list"! Very cumbersome to use! Looks nice but is way too aggravating to try to adjust!
Even with storage permission app doesn't remember new cameras. Looks nice but unusable.
Absolutely love and needed app
Thank you!
Great app, but fails to save camera settings.
Replaced all my DoF & FoV apps! ..Until it crashes on every launch. This happens on all my Android devices, rooted and unrooted. Permissions of the config/data files are still -rw. So it used to be a 5-star rating for me but worse than useless when it's functionality has been stripped away from me.
I really want to like this. I'm a 120 film shooter and need to know DoF but the interface is not user friendly. The directions are not easily understood either. Many features are there but none that I can understand how to use. The distance scale slides but never holds a set distance so you cannot get a good idea of near/ far. I wish there was a video tutorial somewhere so I could figure this out.
Way way way too complicated. I am in the hard sciences and deal with optics regularly, and I still can't figure out how the DOF mode works. The distance scale just slides around and returns to the same number when you let go. Several users have reported this so maybe it should. Be addressed in the manual? This may be the most precise calculation in the Play store, but if I can't figure it out 30 minutes after downloading and reading it he full manual then it is not worth my time. Hate to leave a bad review for what may be my ineptitude, but there seems to be no other way to get in touch with the dev
Confusing and clunky interface, but eventually it makes sense. I wish the different values could be manually typed in, the sliders can make it a bit difficult to get right on 19mm or on 1.0 for blur. Works well otherwise.
This is great! I used to use a little wheel thingy that expodisc made (I believe) but this is just a little bit better (the UI & the numeric display specifically). Thanks! Most devs would pack the screen with ads too, those are terribly distracting (especially for artistic pursuits). Gorgeous interface!
Getting strange results: 85 mm f/2 gives at 200 cm gives me near 199 cm and far 201 cm. So 2 cm DOF on f/2. At f/8 the numbers change to 198 cm and 202 cm, so DOF 4 cm. But at F/11 all numbers say 200 cm, so effectively no DOF at f/11?!? Must be the diffraction thing, but it makes it hard to trust the App.
One of the best Depth of Field, Focus/Blur apps I've seen. The focus stacking feature is absolutely great.
This thing is amazing. The developer poured his heart into it, and it shows in the manual he wrote for it, which reads like a text book. Incredibly informative. One of the best free apps I've ever seen.
A very good DOF app. If your fundamentals are not clear, suggest you read the manual first.
This is by far the best DoF related app. It may look unintuitive first; just spend some time with it and, very important, read the manual. The app is for advanced photographers only. Thank you, Mr. Jonathan.
Really some great ideas here. It could use some improvement. In the focus stacking section, it would make more sense to allow the user to specify the f stop, and the app to calculate the required number of exposures. Also, when you then hit the etc key, it lists the focus points, but if there are a large number of focus points, this screen does not allow you to scroll down.
