For anyone thinking of getting the game cause of nalstalgia few things you should know. 1. Level cap is 70 and many extra high level items are gone 2. There is no voice audio like the console 3. Depending on your phone you may lag or play perfectly fine. 4. Quick save kills the fun so don't use it to get the full experience. 5. I don't know if they kept the secret ending. Still playing through it again. 6. They removed a lot of extra secret stuff and side quests. 7. No epic music :(
Definitely worth the price especially if you haven't played the other versions. Fantastic character designs, very entertaining enemy designs. The camera control is tricky, even when I'm using one finger to move and one to control camera angle, still playable. Compared to the games im used to, combat takes a long time! My team is probably not optimum since i never read guides, I just dive in. Need to take breaks frequently, extended playing with portrait display isn't good for posture.
Playable, but the choice to make the aspect vertical instead of horizontal makes the game feel like playing a bad phone camera video. Also the hard frame lock of 15 a second makes the game feel slow and stuttered. If they had turned the aspect to wide instead of vertical and unlocked the frame rate for faster phones, this could of easily been a 5 out 5 port.
Keep in mind I've never played the ps2 original. This being my first time playing this game I really enjoyed it. The art style is really cool and the controls while not perfect are pretty good in my opinion for a Mobile game. As far as playing in portrait mode, it was a little off putting at first but I did get used to it after a few hours. I here that the ps2 version had voice over which I think would have been great to have in this version. Did suffer some crashes. Good experience
The classic PS2 RPG in about 70% of its full glory. The great story, strategic battle system, and memorable characters are all here, and yet something just seems off. The cheesy yet charming voice acting is gone, the colorful artistic menus are replaced by a dull gray, and the control system is designed such that you cam theoretically play with one hand, but it fails to account for tablets and larger phones like my Pixel 2 XL. In a sense I'd actually recommend this game more if you haven't played the original version, just because you won't know the extra finishing touches and polish you're missing. And buried beneath the drab interface and awkward controls is a truly wonderful game that deserves to be loved for the crippled little beast it is.
I loved the original, but after trying the port on 3 different devices, still very bad frame rate and choppy. I'm sure it would be stellar otherwise, but I'm going to have to request a refund. *EDIT* After I cleaned my cache and restarted my devices, it was smooth sailing. Changed from 1 star to 5. Excellent work. Just had to put in the extra effort to figure it out. ^_^
I don't know about this one. I paid $20 for this hoping for a fun experience but first thing I notice is the framerate. It's very laggy and takes a while for the camera to go where you want to. Then came the controls. It's very hard to move the character around and paired with the laggy framerate you can imagine how hard it is to traverse around town. You also can't customize anything in this game apart from where you want the directional pad placed. No voice acting either, what?
Wish I had bought this for a different platform. The controls are horrid. The game is strictly in portrait mode, so the field of vision is tiny, and moving the camera view takes a lot of time and effort (multiple swipes just to get the proper view every time I turn a corner). Exploring the first town felt like it took forever as a result, and I was not even sure that I had fully explored because the view problems made it impossible to get a holistic sense of the space.
Amazing graphics like being in an anime adventure cartoon, very beautiful immersive environments. Whimsical controls (initially) controls will require a bit of practice. As an android mobile port would be nice to improve with one-tap stepping or touch-screen point-to-go; but there is touch-screen to interact depending on the distance of the object. Unfortunately, for 1 gigabyte of data there are no voice samples. **Update: Half throttle will make you walk, a drag will change direction.
Great classic. Sadly you do not get extra characters and content from the 3DS remake. There is no controller support. Copyrights problems removed the orchestral music and compression requirements removed voiceovers. Impressive to see that this was ported to Unity Engine but this is the worst of all versions of this game unless you count the instant alchemy pot as the key quality of life improvement from the PS2 version that overcomes all the flaws (I don't think it does).
Runs flawlessly on my OnePlus 7 Pro. It feels like the perfect mobile game. The controls are supreme for a one-handed game. The devs placed a lot of effort into porting this, however there's only one way to play; in portrait mode. If you want to play in landscape using a controller, its a no-go. With that said, its a very classic jrpg. Easy to pick up and set down. Charming characters and a colorful environment. Its a console game in your pocket.
Not 5 stars because of controls and lack of customization for basically anything. Other reviews say the controls make it unplayable, but I strongly disagree. Yes, the controls should be better, but my current play through is still beyond enjoyable. Also it runs nearly PERFECT on my Huawei mate 20 lite(slightly above average speed phone). Only 2 crashes in the time I got hero to level 35(30+hrs of gameplay).
I really don't see what all the fuss is about on the frame rate complaint. On a Pixel 2 XL (a phone from 2017) the frame rate seems comparable to the PS2 version that I own. Being stuck in portrait mode doesn't bother me too much. Having the option to change it to a horizontal mode would be nice. The Japanese version didn't have voice-overs nor did it have the same music as the Western version. The Western version is superior in that regard. But, this is an English port of the Japanese version.
Probably the worst port of any game I've ever played. Nonetheless, one of the best games I've ever played. Square Enix would do good to add the voice acting back, add controller support, and let you customize graphics at least a little bit. Playable at best. Wonderful game though. (Also add the damn 3DS port features!!)
one if the best ps2 games ports well to android. The menus are streamlined and theres an auto walk feature. The only downside is the slightly slower load times. I also recently experienced the game crashing and refusing to start again. If it starts up again 4-5 Stars. but for now it gets 2 because I did get ahout 24 hours of great experience before this incident.
I love to see my characters fight, not a huge fan of the older series of DQ, couldn't stand looking at the enemy and watching a move like "HIT" appear anywere. This one is alot better ! It's not worth $19.00.The story is decent, graphics aren't bad, but I just cant get pass the gameplay and camera motion. I feel like the game mechanics need to change and it's only half turn based. SADLY, I'm not intrigued enough to play the game.
This game worked great on my Galaxy s10. In the beginning I didn't like the camera, however, I realized quickly that if the camera is not facing in a forward direction you simply tap the camera button and it will align in the direction the hero is facing instead of having to fumble around dragging the camera to different angles. The game itself was fun, worth the price, and I managed to put 60 hours into it before beating it, without even doing all side quests. Great job on this one guys.
This is the greatest jrpg ever made and it's all here. There are some huge flaws with this version. No landscape mode means that the controls are at times unbearable and most of the immersion of this classic is lost. If SE were to patch in a landscape mode this would be the best game on android. Please patch a landscape mode, please please please etc.......
Well first off, portrait instead of landscape for the view was incredibly a horrible choice by the design team. Would of been set up much better with a directional button on the left side of the screen and control the view from the right side so you could feasibly do both actions at once. That layout was fine for the older games where you didn't have to adjust the view but with DQ8, you all messed up.
This game is honestly great but being locked into portrait mode really hurts the experience of this game. Compared to the original the android version gets rid of voice acting and the menus are kind of ugly but still the main thing that hurts this game and makes it really not worth the price is not being able to put it into landscape mode then hook use a controller through bluetooth. If anyone that hasn't played this game it's really well worth trying to play this on a ps2.
I had heard tales of DQ8- of the fantastic gameplay, grand story, and great soundtrack. But this, as of my few minutes of playing it (Yes, I am reviewing this game after 10 minutes of gameplay, want to fight about it?), the game has frozen several times during the cutscenes, and as a result, I had restarted the game several times. Other than this, the gameplay is smooth, and the game looks nice during combat (Not as good during exploration though) But as of now, I must say, O O F .
I love the dq franchise, have bought all the games up to this point and they worked wonderfully. There is an annoying glitch in this one however. Occasionally you won't be able to click certain options. I know it's not my phone cause other games work perfectly. When playing roulette this glitch will cause the game to lock put after 3-5 bets with the only clickable option being to exit and start over. Very frustrating.
Great game. Weirdly this version is sorta in between the original ps2 version and the Nintendo DS version. I was worried that it would be too difficult to play on my phone but I became a pro quickly. The only time I had any difficulty with the controls was when playing roulette in Baccarat. Sometimes when placing bets my controls would be unresponsive. Might just be my p.o.c. phone tho.
I bought the original for the ps2 when it first came out, I only played maybe 15 hours in then, and never really touched it again. I'm nearly 20 hours in and it feels like the same experience except no orcatraited music or voice acting. Its pretty much the ps2 version, alchemy pot is instant, no extra characters, and you can't see enemies. Its Dragon Quest 8 what more is there to say it's a 10/10 game and I'm enjoying it on my phone, no freezing, force closing, gliches, or slow downs.
I dont reccommend. Galaxy s8. I probably just need to buy a newer phone. Even then tho the controls make it hard to enjoy on a touch screen. Unresponsive or slow to respond. Probably fps issue. Great game tho. Although late game monster capturing to fight in arena seems almost pointless as it was in the original. Another gripe was it had fixed characters. I miss dragon quest 3 as you could customize all your characters the way you wanted. Cant have it all I suppose tho.
This does not work at all on a Brand New Stock Pixelbook with no other apps installed. Customer support waited a week to respond, but then sent me a message asking for my model number and OS. They literally could have answered every single question if they had read my email, but they were just trying to push the can down the road. Not working app backed up by miserable customer support.
As one of the greatest JRPGs of all time, both in scope (the game is huge and first playthrough can easily rack up 70+ hours) and narrative quality, it's nice to have this port available. Yes, the frame rate can be slow at times and the lack of voice acting/artistic menus feels like one's only receiving 85% of the original game, but at £20 it's as good a value purchase as one will get with mobile gaming. Subjectively speaking, I think this is an outstanding game and very enjoyable to play.
Not bad but this isn't the same as the US version for the ps2. No voice acting, no orchestrated soundtrack, plus dragon soul was removed from this version? I grinded my way to level 70 until I figured that out. Feels like a waste of time and money for $20, when the only new feature is the ability to quick save, which kind of takes away part of the experience of the game (going to the church to save). I still enjoyed it though. This version is nice to play while watching TV. Not worth $20 though
