Not always accurate. I've seen it show a route slightly different from the one I traveled. Also, however it determines "hard brakes", it is difficult to not get at least one every time. Almost makes me want to run through red lights because when I slow down for yellow then I sometimes end up with a hard brake event. EDIT 8/11: For the past several days I have been unable to even open the app. Had to uninstall and reinstall the app to get it to work. It was also draining my battery heavily.
Cool concept but it's features progressively get slower each time you open it. For instance, when going between trip details, it can take several seconds to load--upwards of 30 seconds. So, when I need to edit a trip to indicate that I was a passenger, it takes forever. After several months, the app became so slow that I cannot get beyond the white home screen. I had to reinstall the app and now it works fine.
it's terrible but you have to use it to get the discount, so three stars seems appropriate. one version was so bad, my phone acted like it was dying. Google should do a better job of vetting app submissions, and GEICO should replace its entire app development team. it is much better than it was when i first installed it, but it might still benefit from an occasional restart. ignoring its just-doesn't-work issues, it doesn't do a great job of categorizing motion so you have to review your trips. it is possible to get a good score (mine is currently 110), but don't expect to avoid occasional complaints about Hard Braking.
Definitely drains the battery, I tried to block it from running in the background but that just made it stop logging trips. So it's clear it's created to only run in the background, which is an issue that needs to be fixed. Also, it's hard to tell what qualifies as a hard breaking event. Some days I have zero, and some days I have 3, usually at stop sign points.
It was fine when it was just running in the background but suddenly I can't even use the app AT ALL unless it can track my location at all times. Geico does not need to know where I am at all times. Fix this. On top of that, the majority of the time it thinks I'm a passenger when the drive is perfect, but thinks I'm the driver when there are 17 counts of phone handling. I have to go through each drive individually every time to ensure my own score is accurate. Calibrated backwards or something
A great idea but a very poor app. Good luck if you drive a lot for work or live in a city. It doesn't like change of speed. Just needs a few fixes and it would be okay. Edit: July 2020 Update now takes weather, road types, smooth/inconsistent driving speeds, cornering, mileage and a time of day into account. My score dropped from a steady 90-94 to a 70 and barely moves. Not so favorable anymore...no clue how often it clears old drives or if they all count starting from day 1 to day number 360.
The app requires you to leave location services on all the time in order to qualify for the discount. However, there is no trial period. Once installed, it is too remain installed for the duration which you would like to keep benefitting from the discount. The biggest minus to the app, is that leaving the location services on all the time reduced my battery performance from an average of around 8-10 hrs prior to downloading the app, to just 2 hours.
While I have seen the benefit of this app, I was not a fan of having the score criteria change without a detailed description of how it is tracked (ie. cornering & smooth driving). The drive history/map should show locations where the new driving-based metrics were impacted, much like the phone/hard brakes. Finally, old drives should not count towards new metrics. My score dropped 8 overnight after the update, and it felt like being retroactive graded on something with no knowledge or warning.
Would give it a "zero" if possible. Registers "hard brake" arbitrarily and "handheld use of phone" - if this app was meant to cause frustration than I'd give it 5 stars. Good concept, but in my opinion doesn't even come close to doing what it is supposed to do. Doesn't take into account mapping features, kids or other passengers using the phone and just randomly places incidents during the trip - this app needs a lot of work.
Dissapointing. When the app works it does its job, but it just stops working out of nowhere and needs to be opened on nearly a daily basis or it doesn't track your driving and you get an email saying you'll lose the bonus. Oftentimes it has to be deleted and reinstalled to get working properly because it won't load past the GEICO G symbol. Currently the app doesn't even work for me after my latest software update. Galaxy Note 20 ultra
Intrusive app. More and more privacy is being thrown out the window. I have a great driving record and that should speaks for itself. This ridiculous monitoring is to much. Is bad enough that they base your discount on your college education and credit score which is ridiculous. That has nothing to do with how you drive. If GEICO takes away my discount because of this nonsense that's fine with me I'll go back to Progressive.
Very unstable app. I've had it for a while, it was working before one of the last updates, but stop working after. I uninstalled it, and reinstalled it because it stopped tracking my drives. Even after the reinstall, it only tracks rarely, and my 189 record got reseted and stays at 1 now. I still get emails trying to get the app on my wife's phone, and although she has it, she's passing through the same issue.
The app is Not bad. You can add and delete vehicles from your policy, sign up to autopay and lots more stuff with the app successfully. The insurance however is not the cheapest rates and take away all the discounts they give and it would be the most expensive around. All in all it's good and convenient.
Is the DriveEasy discount nice, yeah. Its one of the bigger discounts that'll be applied to your premium. The program itself is a great idea but the apps, both Geico's main app and the DriveEasy app doesn't due it much justice. On my phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 10), it normally works. Now on my daughters phone (she has an Android Lifeline device), it NEVER works. Can't get it to load, if we manage to get it to, it doesn't record her drives. Been bumped off the program twice because of this. 😠
It's understandable that the app can't possibly detect whether you're driving or not, so it's nice that it asks, but in a situation where you and your spouse both drive for part of a trip, and the passenger is navigating for the driver, you can't count the trip, because it penalizes both drivers for being distracted with their phones. This form of driving is incompatible with the app, which makes it effectively useless in this circumstance.
This app doesn't work on half the drives you take. And further, it randomly starts by itself when you're nowhere near a car, runs as a battery drain, and makes you jump through hoops to turn it off. I don't mind the discount for using it, but I mind how intrusive it is when I'm not in the car.
This app sucks. It takes forever to load. You MUST keep your location on always. The phone can't tell the difference when the passenger is on the phone. The app eats my battery, and says yout breaking hard even when your not as well as says your driving even if YOUR in the passenger seat on a whole different car. If you use Bluetooth it still says your using a handheld device. This appp NEEDS ALOT OF WORK
I followed the installation instructions to the letter, and yet the app often does not detect that I am driving, and I have, as a result, received many of the emails other reviewers have mentioned asking me to log in. I have logged in and back out several times, I have my location on constantly, but still it doesn't work. If this could be corrected, I would give 5 stars.
Trying to install on my wife's phone which is incompatible with this version. The App could be a whole lot better. We are trying to do all that is asked to enjoy the discount but can't load App on old smart phones. Not even sure this App even makes any sense. If the passenger picks up phone it gets recorded.???? Oh well
Yada yada like the discount. However this is the second time I've gotten an email from GEICO stating that I shut down the app, which I did not. I check my permissions and I allow it to run in the background all the time. So that means it's crashing on itself and causing it to not record data. Please address this because it is starting to get frustrating knowing it's not recording me and acting like I'm purposely not using the app.
I have no problem having the app because I like the discount. However, it stops working or closes itself all the time and then I get notifications from GEICO that I need to start the app back up. How about you make an app that doesn't crash and shut itself off? I notice no battery drain and I really don't care how it critiques my driving because the discount isn't reliant upon certain driving habits. The discount is reliant on you keeping the app installed and open.
Needs a lot of work. It falsely reports hard breaking and there is no distinction between you handling your phone or say my wife picking up my phone during a drive. It also runs all day even when your not driving sucking up battery power. Im sitting at a desk for 8-10 hrs a day i dont need the app running then. To get a clearer look at how someone is driving this app needs to integrate speed of travel and a camera function to video the drive stored on a database.
This app is decent, but quite the battery sap. Easily takes 15% or more battery every day. Definitely my top battery draining app. Sometimes it even makes my phone warm while driving. Occasionally my phone will also close this app while it's in the background. It's pretty annoying to be threatened to leave this app open or lose my discount when it's not really my fault that it keeps closing on it's own. Please fix. Everything else is fine with the exception of these 2 flaws. Using a Galaxy S9.
Doesn't work half the time. Trips are missing even the few during this shelter in place are missing most of the time. Then Geico sends me texts that I have not used the app. But it runs constantly on my phone. Today it freezes up and stopped working so I uninstalled and reinstalled. Now asks for my cell number and states the number is invalid. So now it doesn't work at all. At least before it worked some of the time.
I understand the concept of this app but it is constantly running and draining my battery. I am unable at times to keep the phone on a charger. Which then the phone dies. My job and other important things in life require the phone to remain charged so I am able to be contacted at any given moment. I need to keep the app to be able to keep my discount but can not keep having a dead phone because of the app continuously running! Any suggestions ????????
It's very annoying that everytime I am passenger I have to go in and say so. Also, I live in a rural area and there are often hard brakes for animals crossing the road, especially deer. Also, so hard braking for another vehicle that just pulled out in front of you, or a child running out in front of you, etc., shouldn't be counted against you, it's actually because you are paying attention, or should one plow right through these situations??? (I'm being facetious of course!) Battery draining!
They want to know everything... This app doesn't count with situations like ... I drive a different car with a different insurance, the app doesn't know if I'm a public transport or friends car or just a lift... and I can continue... Very upset that to get a discount they want to know every move I do! That's call privacy... 0% recommend!
I take the same bus to and from work, at almost the exact same times, five days a week, and it still refuses to understand that I am NOT using my phone for "85% or more of driving time." Every time I tell it I am not the driver, and though it fixes the streak count, my score is still mediocre. There needs to be a way for it to "learn" a lot better, as when I'm actually driving it accurately understands things like hard brakes. There needs to be a "passenger" mode or something...
Useless battery drain. Takes itself on random trips around my block when I'm sitting at home and logs phone use while driving. Driving phone slides or falls on floor logs excessive braking and acceleration and phone use. Even if you never touch the phone. Placed it in console. Phone slides around and every time it bumps in console logs double acceleration and braking and more phone use. Even driving under 30. Potholes trigger the app. App freezing requires uninstall and reinstall.
The idea behind the app is nice and it indeed helps to establish undistracted driving. On the bad side is that it requires location and movement access all the time and strains the battery. The biggest problem however, is that it suddenly stops working all the time and then I start receiving emails from Geico about it. The only way to get it back up is to fully reinstall the app. We shouldn't be bothered about it so often if it's that broken.
