I love how easy it is to refer to the meaning of the characters as you read the stories. As you keep reading, more and more characters are mastered. The app is user friendly and can choose traditional or simplified, with or without pinyin, and can make the fonts bigger or smaller. I'm thankful to those who created this app. It's such a big help to learning Chinese.
it's not something that you always wanna do but it is teaching a lot of things when you do it! it's like reading a book: you don't really want to read always but it brings you a lot of benefits. And also the stories are pretty nice and interesting! I personally find it very useful on my chinese learning journey and can recommend it to you all who learn Chinese
Reading exercises are a great way to study Chinese... includes correct pronunciation and word for word translation of each character, along with the ability to slow down and repeat the passage as needed. I didn't find the flash cards feature as helpful... to study, I follow the exercises from Du Chinese then enter the vocab into Anki to practice with spaced repetition.
Great app with consistently very meaningful updates. Out of all the language learning reading apps I've used (including for learning French and Spanish), this is the best reading app I've found. Very intuitive interface. Beautiful yet simple design. Especially for a language as complicated to read as chinese, it's really remarkable how much punch is packed into such a simple -to -use app.
While it's a little on the expensive side to use the full version, the app has a fairly invaluable number of exercises that are well done and well presented. Quick suggestions for the author: it'd be nice to have the "pinyin for hard characters" mode be customizable to HSK level---so I can set my HSK level and it shows everything above that level.
You can read the chinese characters first and select characters to save for quizzes later. You can also select when to see the pinying, by hovering over the characters. A great way to increase your vocabulary and reading abilities.
Really good app with really good content and learning features, however: I really dislike subscription services, I wish I could just buy a premium version for a single price and then I own all content as oppose to monthly payments along with all the other monthly payments of life.
This is such a wonderful way to get grammar and vocabulary in a comprehensible context. Truly invaluable tool for learning. Worth the subscription cost. Options for traditional characters and bopomofo too. Thanks so much!
This is a fantastic resource for learning Mandarin!! It allows you to read each word as a character, as pinyin, and with English translation! And one can start with easy lessons and gradually study more difficult lessons!
for the last 4 years I'm being trying to find the best app for Chinese learning. and finally found it! seriously, du Chinese is helping a lot with my real communication, vocab and phrase construction. best qian invested!!
Such a great way to improve my 汉语skills, reading this short stories and articles. Very helpfull. The stories are very interesting and the articles about chinese regular life and habbits help to understand the culture a lot.
My favourite app for chinese learning! Incredible for training reading ability and expanding vocabulary! Lots of content is free and the articles are always super interesting!
Really great app, well read stories that range from explanations of various idioms and legends to social commentary and facts about China. The flashcard capability is a nice touch too.
Exactly the app we needed to take our Chinese to the next level. One of the best Chinese learning apps we've ever tried.
Best reading app for all levels and you can practice pronunciation by following along or listening by closing your eyes!
This app is so far the best reading app i came upon as a beginner to Chinese. It's really easy to understand constext of stories and learn new words altogether. I do think if would have been even greater if the translation was just beneath the Chinese characters. I easily lose focus on the text due to that and have to go back and forth a lot of the time. But overall, you did a great work.
Been using the app for years living in China. Now I open a text every now and then and I encountered a problem: the new words I save go into my enormous word bank (almost 2 000 words saved) and there's no way to practice them separately from these 2 000. I wish there was a word review thing for one lesson only, like you save flashcards from a text and then work on them till you can read the text without an issue.
Please add the ability to color code characters by tone as done in Pleco dictionary. This is an extremely useful innovation and helps to synchronize learning styles across apps. It also reduces the need for pinyin and helps those who read aloud. Would also appreciate a dark mode toggle in the settings as it is easier on the eyes. Will increase to 5 star when acknowledged and buy a year long subscription when both of these improvements are implemented. It's a superb app nonetheless !!!
This is a great app!! It allows you to see the sentence translation if you tap on it, and if you press and hold a word, you can see that word's definition. You can select different levels of reading. There is newbie, beginner, intermediate, and so on. I am beginner, and could read the newbie lessons easily. There isn't an overabundance of ads, which is awesome, and the lessons come with native speakers that read the stories you want.
Great! It's really great. I especially liked the story since i learned english by reading stories i thought it might work for chinese, and so far it is. I like the features, of the visibility on and off the pin, and the audio, and to save particular words to review later. I really like the review since it helps you recognize the characters as is and not the pin as I'm tempted to. Really like it, these are just few of the great features and lessons.
pretty good actually. while it's technically a reading app, I use it mostly for listening practice. multiple speeds listening is nice to have, although it sounds a little metallic on high speed. The texts are generally not uninteresting. A downside is that I haven't found a way yet to download the saved vocabulary to use in other vocab apps. and some features seem to not be available in the web version. overall I'd say it's worth the money. at least for my needs
Improved my listening and reading skills at the same time. The contents are also modern and interesting. So far, this is the best app I have known up to now in terms of learning these two skills. The optional display of pinyin, the translation at the top and reading sentences in natural tones in addition to customizable speeds are all the things I've loved about this app and nothing more I can ask for.
I enjoy this app very much. I'm not a beginner student and I find the short stories very useful in teaching me how to form sentences better rather than just learning words. Usually I watch Chinese tv series with subtitles to learn a bit here and there, but you can't save the new words when watching TV. Thank you to the developers for creating these contents:')
There's a bug on the latest version of the app where changing the audio speed is no longer working-- when I press to use 1.5x, audio stops working completely. Besides the bug, Du Chinese is one of my favorite learning resources- the articles expose me to a lot of useful words and grammar patterns. Especially enjoying the longer stories with multiple parts. If it weren't for that recent bug, this would be a 5 star app! Update: can work around bug using regular headphones instead of Bluetooth.
This is an excellent app with some great integration with other apps as well. It has made practising reading clever accessible and enjoyable. It could be improved by including courses that facilitate the moving from one level to another. I am currently between elementary and intermediate level texts and feel I've exhausted the elementary level texts but intermediate is still a bit of a jump away. Definitely recommend this app if you are wanting to practice reading Chinese!
It is a terrific learning tool. The options available help to pick out words that you want to continue to study. Best app I've found for keeping up on my language skill. The only other improvement I could recommend is to add the different language sets like casual and business. Most of the lessons are structured around casual conversations. But they are awesome.
Love this app! Great for reading practice. I especially like that the pinyin isn't automatically shown all the time, because it can be a bit of a crutch. Also love that you can save hard words to review later! Only disappointing thing is that a lot of the content is premium, but I understand that they need to make money. Wish there was an option to watch ads to unlock content, though.
