EFM - ECO Free Market

ECOFreeMarket (EFM) is a Social Enterprise program based on GIFT Economy, defined as a mode of exchange where valuables are not traded or sold, but rather given without an explicit agreement for immediate or future rewards. EFM is unique where visitors are welcome to take home any item on display for free, without any catch.

EFM invites anybody and everybody to bring various items which are still in good condition, offering to those who want them. It also encourages the contribution of skills and services like medical check-ups, legal, financial advises as well as repair services.
EFM functions as a platform to connect those who have something to give and those with needs. Visitors who do not have anything to offer are still welcome to join the fun as EFM does not operate based on a trading system.

In short, ECOFreeMarket is simply a manifestation of the honest gesture of giving.
All or ECOFreeMarket programs are jointly organised Local Authorities and other partner organisations. Historically, we started with Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) as the main supporter of our programme which reflects Local Authority initiative towards sustainable community as propagated by the Low Carbon City Framework. We owed much gratitude to the original founders, Mahadi Mohd Esmaely (GoGreen Malaysia), Rahmat Bayudi (TAAT Foundation), Ahamad Emran (FreeMarket) and Rohana Lisut (Skuad Senyum), on its implementation. They were generously assisted by MBSA especially the team led by the Director of Department of Community Development Puan Asma Mohd Zin.

The Department of Community Development MBSA provides consistent support from the start in 2016. Since then most of our events were held at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam to coincide the Shah Alam Car Free Day.

Evidently ECOFreeMarket is based on the more reknown FreeMarket movement started by Ahamad Emran, Syed Azmi, Hayati Ismail et al. As the concept grow further, we sought collaboration with other NGO such as TAAT Foundation, Food Aid Foundation, Skuad Senyum, Kindness Malaysia etc. Many sponsorship comes in the form of goods and support from businesses and associations across the region. Universities and Colleges such University Technology MARA (UiTM), University Selangor (UniSel) and University Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) had assisted by sending volunteer groups to help manage these events held throughout the year.

ECOFreeMarket has now acquired generous sponsorship from Kumpulan Perangsang Selangor Berhad (KPSB) for 2018 with target one event in every district in Selangor. We have since established working relationship other Local Authorities namely Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Klang Municipal Council (MPK) and other District Councils in Selangor in line with the sponsorship objectives among others.

In recent development, we have taken significant initiative to organise ECOFreeMarket in rural areas as with an event held in Raub, Pahang. The event was jointly organised with together with JKKK, Majlis Daerah Raub, Masjid committee and other state agencies.
