It's a nice idea and fun to mess around with but there's loads of room for improvement. A few observations : 1. The minor scale setting defaults to harmonic minor. Not sure why this is the case. They could have had separate options for harmonic minor and natural minor. 2. More sounds, with the ability to tweak the processing. 3. ADSR Control would be nice. 4. The settings reset if you go to the lock screen. This should not happen.

I am no musician myself, and that app makes me feel like I could be. It is a brilliantly intuitive application that manages to never sound 'bad'. There is however a bug: is you set the octave to +2, go with 14 Size, and hit the highest note with Sound = Distorted Dreams, then all sound producing ability is lost and the app has to be restarted (just to confirm: this happens on two different tablets models, and one smart phone). Given that the app is version 1.0 and goes back 5 years, I doubt that this will get fixed, however. There may be a few improvements: the octave range adjustment, for instance, requires to bring a pull down menu; it would be simpler if it was not only more accessible, but also left an indication of the current value on the display itself. On a large tablet, there is enough space to make the volume range adequate with only half the height, which could allow to have two half pads, for an increased range. There is such a huge potential for this application, it is surprising that it not been expanded.

Nice! This is indeed a new instrument. It has elements of some existing instruments, but built in a way that is very playable. I do agree with one reviewer, more available divisions would be great; I'm thinking 25 to allow a full 2 octaves on a chromatic scale. Another thought would be to add an option for no divisions, where the user simply specifies a range (number of octaves or steps). This would allow complete pitch freedom without being locked to the steps of any tonal reference scale.

Its an outstanding app. However the 6th in the minor scale is sharp like in the harmonic scale. Please correct that. I would like a few more sounds in it to select from and please make it easier to switch between keys and scales. Also some smoothing is required while going from one note to another. The app is great. Good job creators. Keep it up!

I work with people with profound physical difficulties and minute range and strength of movement. I use Either Surface with some of my patients. The scale choice, sounds and sensitivity are excellent. The only improvement I would welcome is in the number of 'note bars' one can have on the screen. It would help my patients get a wider note range if there could be doubling/trebling of the 'keyboard range'. A brilliant app though and all praise to its developer! I hope this refinement is possible!

Great for a little unique instrument. And free. Very nice. I love the reverberated ambience. It gives everything an ethereal feel, like a whale song. It's very similar to Bebot, yet has its own charm. Highly recommended to musicians or just people wanting a unique sound experience. You don't need musical understanding to enjoy it either.

Really neat and simple to use "instrument" for Android devices that makes it easy to produce interesting chord sequences—this could be useful inspiration when composing. Default timbre is very relaxing as well, and the scales used allow a total beginner to easily experiment with chords and see what works. Not sure why the default scale seems to switch from hexatonic to pentatonic after the first octave, though—that's my only real complaint.

I have played alot and I mean alot of games and most if not all of the instrument apps through the play store. It is absolutely safe to say my opinion on these apps can be trusted 100%. So the EtherSurface is one of my all time favorites. I never get tired of playing with it and it is really, really cool. It is unique and interesting, relaxing and and the scales and key variations keep me wanting to hear more. So five stars is a no brainers. I would love to use more apps like this in the future.

Fun, Simple and Well-Designed. Edit: It warns you it doesn't work on the lastest Android version and alas, when you to to push the bars, the notes get stuck. @dev(s) if you have the time you'd make a musician very happy if you could make this Android 10 compatible. It still gets 5 stars because when it works it's amazing.

Outside of the little residual echoic-type "clicking sound" (for lack of a better, more appropriate/applicable term) which *accompanies most (each?) new tones that are played, this serves EXACTLY the purpose(s) for which I took the plunge here, in the FIRST place...!! (NOTE : That * up there, references that subtle "clicking" I encounter, BU-UU-UTT..... In the event that this's an anomaly on MY end 《i.e. Related to my phone's processor, or speaker...》, thus absolving the developer/app of any part-to-play in my annoyance 《lolz...》, I actually enjoy manipulating the UI and the resulting vocal-like synth output, enough to assign an extra, 5th, star to my rating...!!!

Wonderful sound, very expressive! I have two feature requests -- can you add the option to increase volume towards the bottom instead of towards the top (that tends to be the convention in DAWs and VSTs and such), and can you add the ability to import scala files for new scales? Even if it's just by manually dropping them into a folder. Thanks!

Absolutely addicting. With any music background you can create melodies. But are looking for enhanchments like key labeling, save, import export. With zero musical background you are probably better off. You are free of the rules. You just create beautiful atmospheric almost sensual dare i say an aura around yourself. Don't be surprised if you look over at your significant other and they have a dreamy look in their eyes. Better than scopolamine.

I have just discovered this beautiful and very musical app. Thank you for offering this to the community! As a musician I would love to see more scales (modes , microtonal, just intonated) and maybe a few more synth patches to choose from. Also the possibility to dial in the amount of effects would be great. I would definetely pay for such a app.

Only an ok sound/instrument app but gets an extra star * for being free. With that said it is reminiscent of other older apps such as Morphwiz and Bebot. Would be a 4* or up if it had a selection of instrument skins such as a metal, wood or futuristic, visuals that corroborated with the sounds, and more customizations other than just amount of keys or minor scale and note tweaks. Would definitely be worth it as a paid app and deserve more but needs some love and excitement.

I liked it's sounds and it's controls. Also, the app is lighter than other musical apps. So, this is highly recommended to all. Developer, please add a feature to record the music and a seekbar to change the octave would be great.

Very fun and easy to use. Helps with making music sometimes, especially with making cool melodies. If we had the option to see the notes it would be much more useful! (Some of us aren't that knowledgeable of the scales quite yet lol)

I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but I was pleasantly surprised by the sounds I could generate within the app's scales & keys. If I must have any app with which I'll use to pass the idle moments, let it be one that reignites my interest in making music... and I think this app fits the description well. Thank you for building such a cool app!

Poor sound. Like tinnitus but louder with wayy too much reverb. There were better free apps than this many years ago when i got my first smartphone, if youre copying an idea it should ideally add something as opposed to being worse otherwise youre wasting peo people's time imo. No idea why this is rated so highly, id say about 1.5 out of 5 but rounded up rather than down :)

EtherSurface is one of those Apps that actually is a work of art and a joy to experience. The tones and fx are set just right for a journey in sound reminiscent of those 15 Stations you see hanging on the walls of your church. Ether Surface however does not offer a Record button nor can my Android an Alcatel Idol 5 with VR capture the Ether face of Station VI. I'll bet there is back end code though that had permission and access to the users camera and that image gets sent to the Vatican.

A fun app that makes really interesting and soothing sounds. Easy to play with multiple settings for all kinds of effects. I also like that there is no intrusive permissions or ads. This one is a keeper. You gotta try it.

Play with adjustments. It's really easy to make you feel like you know what your doing. Sounds are great. To bad not a different background. Yet I haven't actually looked. Really cool. Have fun with an amazing synthesizer basically.

Cracking little app, really satisfying to play around with, produces a good sound, and doesnt get all up in your face with ads and other annoyances. I'd love it if it were possible to overlay the notes of the scale

I'm not talented on music, but this app make it fun and intuitive enough for me to understand how to compose a song. Too bad, the lack option to record and create a repretoar to play, just unfortunate. I hope there's gonna improvement soon.
