Etymonline - English Etymology Dictionary

Great resource, intuitive. Going back to a word's root and checking the words generated from it is a bit clunky at times but forming a structure like that takes a great deal of planning that I don't expect from any app. The price of premium membership is a little too high, even if it was a one time purchase, which it isn't. Dark mode would be great and even my phone (miui) can't force dark mode like it does with other apps for some reason. Having said all this, I use it daily. 9/10.

The best resource for online etymology but the website has more discoverable features. Whilst the app does function as intended I would personally use the webpage itself moreover the app. That said, most of the stars on my rating has been due to the webpage and not the app. My thanks to Douglas Harper & Dan McCormack for such an awesome website. Hopefully the app will improve over time.

Excellent, an exhaustive and comprehensive dictionary with full etymologies for every word. For anyone who loves words, or history, this could not be bettered.

The study, origin of words is very important! Speaking writing words correctly is power. Spelling spell casting. Please study words!

Great app. Great user experience - it is intuitive and runs quickly. Only criticism is the lack of an option to disable ads. Apps like this often have an option to pay for the ad-free version, which many ppl - myself included - would go for. A couple of bucks is a small fee to pay to support the website's owner and enjoy an ad-free experience.

Packed with interesting and relevant information about word history, with definitions included. The adverts manage to be both prominent and unobtrusive, and there is no pressure to upgrade from annoying pop ups. The app has a relaxing and comfortable feel to it, and is easy to use. This is by far the best I've used for etymology, including the Oxford one which is nowhere near as good. Highly recommended.

I think this is likely the best language application I've used. It lacks only one (1) feature: the ability to cite the text. I do a fair bit of writing (mostly for my own pleasure), and it would be handy to have this feature in order to be able to interpose the text into them. Knowledge of etymology can make the difference between good writing and EXCELLENT writing. 4 thumbs up!!

User interface is nice, it's responsive and it's easy to copy information. However, on a tablet it forces portrait mode, which is a deeply silly thing to do and shows the developers were a bit lazy. The description in Playstore in misleading - this is an *online* version, and offline mode needs a subscription. Well, I can get an offline OED app for a one-off cost of about 2 years of this one, so cheap it isn't ...

To be honest, it's useless. The browser version is much more convenient and functional. You can't copy any text to share it. Flashy ads in the middle of entries: can't make screenshots without them. You can't get a link to a dictionary entry to share it. You can't open a few tabs and switch between them. Sorry, this app only deserves one star. I like the browser version, although it's become less useful in a way recently.

Great app, I'm learning alot. In fact I pop in for a split second to learn a word's meaning and its origin's, whilst researching other stuff and end up spending more time in here . Not because of any difficulties in using the app. But rather than a quick in and out with the information i climb in deeper with other words and find it very educating.

Impressive. I've used your website for a while, wishing for an app version too. The passion behind the work you've put into both is undeniable. For years, I wanted an etymology-focused dictionary and had downloaded several credible dictionaries, but the etymology portion was never satisfactory; more of a token afterthought. Yours is deep and comprehensive, which is the whole point of etymology. Thank you for your work.

"Works offline" is UNTRUE. But even without this lie, still no more than 3 stars. Slow to open and, inconsistently, very laggy. A-Z links are so tiny as to be useless. No history of terms viewed or searched, no reference (of abbreviations etc), no FAQs or contact link. Yet it's twice the size of many browsers - as big as some graphics-heavy RPGs. I'm gutted; I've repeatedly searched for an Etymonline app and suddenly here it was - but not worth the space nor the patience it demands. Deleted.

I really like the app so far and I will probably subscribe but as a Turkish person I wish you would have adjusted cost for Turkish lira. Your subscription fee seems to be determined by Dollar, and in my currency the fee is really high. It would be better if you can adjust your fees accordingly. Or maybe a one time permanent payment like other dictionary apps do would suffice also. As for app, it needs few more options like dark background, bookmark and stuff. But keep it up, excellent app!

While the dictionary once served a purpose in my life, I find that exploring the origin of a word or phrase adds depth and dimension to it's definition. Much like the contrast between reading about the Grand Canyon, in contrast to standing it's edges in person with full, panaramic vision. Etymonline App is the best I've found and has replaced the dictionary for my understand of everything. Well done.

Excellent & thorough reference dictionary. To explain the optional ‘Not Sure’ replies below: “Is the catalogue of books good?”: is irrelevant; it's a dictionary, not a bibliography. “Can you customize the app?”: yes & no. You *can* add bookmarks & edit the search history, but there is no cosmetic frippery to prettify (& bloat) the app. It just gives comprehensive & detailed information with illustrative examples from the period under discussion & it's all the better for it.

Love the reading plans! I switch between this app and the Blue Letter Bible app, because they both offer different things. (BLB, for example offers more free commentaries), but it's the reading plans based on topic in this app that BLB does not provide. There are so many different options based on your interests, time frame, reader's "level", etc.

Neat app. Well designed. Ads kinda suck and OF COURSE it's a subscription.....really? for a glorified dictionary? $6.79 I'd pay. but $22/year! no shot. Honestly, just bookmark the website and be done with it.

So far so good! I like it a lot, it has nothing but lovely -- But I would also love for there to be the ability to customize, I would love to change the theme/interface into a negative dark background and white text. This app would be so much more the lovelier with these features!

It is a great app to look up for words and its origin including the suffixes & prefixes (and learning some interesting things about its history). However, I experienced some lags and it even stopped responding. In both cases I had to restart the app.

It's my favorite dictionary. However, I can give some recommendations 1) easier book marking, one step rather than three steps. No need to hide it in the menu, just a tiny icon 2) easier access to the bookmarked words. 3) ability to export bookmarks in csv or sync them to online account All the best

The app is great to learn new English words. The root words help to remember new words easily. Few suggestions: 1) I would suggest to add a feature by which we can hear the pronounciation of words. 2) Add a separate section in app in which all root words are listed and below each root word, a tree/chart is displayed of all the English words that are generated from it. This will help a lot to increase vocabulary.

For many, many years this reference has been the most important in my digital collection. Nothing has helped clarify and improve my thinking so much. This project has been around for years, and I cringe when I think of how little I've supported this team. I've never given an app 5 stars. Well, maybe Unciv. I dunno. Definitely download this!

the app is great as it helps in building a strong vocabulary. My experience is wonderful with this app. My Suggestion are, 1-add a feature of voice search. 2- pronunciations of words 3-A tree Chart of roots of the searched word, which really saves time during revision. Otherwise this is the best app, I really Loved your work❤

I find I use this app more and more often: it's like using it makes me more curious about random words I come across. Also neat to follow the roots and see the connection between words I never imagined were related. Contents are thorough and reliable. I definitely recommend. It's far superior (IMO) to free online dictionaries - as far as etymologies go.

Love the app. However I've noticed that every time i open it, Android informs me that the app pasted my clipboard. I don't see it pasted anywhere. I'm hoping this is a mistake that can be corrected and not malicious.

Great etymological dictionary which lets me dig deep into any word, including the meaning of common prefixes, etc., for insight into other words. ______ A few notes/suggestions: (1) A dark mode would be great (harsh on the eyes at night). (2) Move (or add) the text size adjustment setting to the main setup menu (since it's universal for the app--found it only by accident). (3) The "X Close" option does nothing when I click on it. Not sure what it's for. [Samsung Galaxy S10+, Android 10]

Overall I think it's a good app you get to learn more word origin, but I wish it was more in depth and clear.The explanation of the words are in paragraphs, it should be more organized because they put more than one of the origins of the word in the same paragraph.The paragraph just jumps around very unclear. It'd be nice as well to have a homepage with a menu/guide.It would improve the organization and the quality of the app.The app just pops you in.This could be an amazing app with some edits
