Evolution

Use joints, bones and muscles to build creatures that are only limited by your imagination. Watch how the combination of a neural network and a genetic algorithm can enable your creatures to "learn" and improve at their given tasks all on their own.

IMPORTANT: This is a simulator and not a game! If you are not interested in the concepts of natural selection, genetic algorithms and neural networks and watching them work together then this is probably not the app you're looking for! Everyone else, please continue reading :)

The tasks include running, jumping and climbing. Can you build the ultimate creature that is good at all of the tasks?

I want to stress again that there are no real objectives. Even if a creature of yours reaches 100% fitness, you don't win anything except for (hopefully) lots of excitement and joy.

IMPORTANT (again): The simulation is pretty CPU heavy so it will crash on most old and/or low-powered devices. If your device does not meet these minimum performance requirements you should NOT download this app!
If you just experience some lag you might be able to improve the fps by lowering the population size in the start menu.

For more information on how the algorithm works behind the scenes and everything else you might be interested in click on the "?" button in the creature building scene.

1.1 Update: You can now save and load your simulation progress.

There is also a Mac & PC version available for download and a browser version for you to try out on the main project website (keiwan.itch.io/evolution).

AMAZING game! Fascinating! Exciting! Fun! Needs improvements! This game is wonderful, however it's lacking one or two things. You see, in real life, some creatures can fly and some can swim. I think there should be the option of wings and fins along with sky and water. Of course, the original area (for ground creatures) should be included as well. The other addition is which ways the joints can rotate, as seen in real life with knees and elbows. Other than that, amazing game!

There are a bunch of problems with this game and it's algorithm, like that annoying bug where bones are supposed to be indestructible and inseparable, and yet sometimes triangles defy all logic and bend like springs! Also, the algorithm has a problem (which I mentioned it did), because sometimes you have a creature that is made in a way in which there's a specific way to walk (/jump/climb/jump over obstacles) that would be perfect, but only when it's done in exactly the right way; Therefore, an algorithm like this one couldn't achieve it. Making weird creatures and watching them successfullylearn how to walk (/jump/... ah, whatever!)-- although a rare occurrence-- is very enjoyable thing. To sum up, it's a very good game with quite the load of flaws, but I recommend it to anyone who's a science nerd like me.

I do like how unique this app is and that you can watch things evolve, but it would be nice to be able to choose where to attach muscles between bones and possibly more than one. I'd also like the option to choose which of the simulations should go to next gen. Sometimes I find other movements more successful even if I didn't anticipate them. Lastly, a cage, or solid structure would also be nice to have. Trying to build a pelvis for two ostrich legs only ends up shattering everywhere.

Great concept, and overall fun game. The real problem comes from the glitchy muscles. The AI learns quickly that it can glitch the muscles and make the creature shoot around the map at a rate that no built creature could beat. This makes the game unplayable, since it is always a valid tactic that will always beat any real attempts. It's just a matter of time before every member of a generation will be using glitchy muscles. If the devs make it so that we could pick the members that move on it would solve the issue of glitches getting picked. Something like, touch the 2 members you like during an iteration. Then, the game can put a marker on them so we know which ones we chose. Would definitely be worth 5 stars if this were fixed.

This is a fun evolution simulation game. You get to create your own creatures. In addition, you can save the creatures and replays of evolution, allowing you to review what you did right or wrong with that creature. There's also tests of several types, allowing you to check if they can walk, jump, and even climb stairs! Only problem is lag. Overall good game. 🐱👍

It is a very good game, IF YOU KNOW HOW TO ACTUALLY DO IT. The controls are extremely simple, THE ARRANGING PIECES CORRECTLY ISNT. Creating a successful creature takes time, patience , knowledge and skill. If you have those 4 traits, you may have found a perfect game for you. But if you dont...you'll probably never be able to play it correctly.

love the idea of games like this, had one on my PC. I heard of this & wanted to check it out thinking it would be fun to mess around with on the go. the problem is it lacks basic features other games like this have, like a score/markers to tell how far your creature has gone. not only that the background is completely blank making it very difficult to tell if your creature is even going forward or just sliding back and forth or going backwards. a ground texture doesn't help since it's so dark.

The concept for this game is amazing. I had a great time building creatures and modifying them so that their bodies would give them a best chance of success. But as others have said the computer almost always glitches out after a few generations and you end up with creatures flying around the map and through the floor. If that could be fixed this game would be an easy five star.

They seem to quickly learn that by just holding themselves steady they can naturally slide forwards a little. When that doesn't progress very much, they then unlearn everything and slump back down. After that, just seems to glitch out, and they learn that feaking out will get them the most "movement", despite it being unreasonable. And this continues well past gen 100. I can sometimes see them start to figure it out, but it always results in going down the drain again.

The best time killing application, and very addictive. I never write reviews, hopefully that says something. There are some updates that would be great. 1.Full view / Access / Control of the X,Y,Z axis, especially for symmetry and when playing god one should see and control all angles. 2.A duplicate button. 3.An undo, redo button. 4.None of my sims ever save when I press save. 5.The ability to put the muscles in specific areas and different muscles. Thank you for creating this! Much Love.

I like the game, but it has several flaws, mostly in the fact that sometimes they get into "inch wars" where the only directive is to make it farther and as some don't work as intended they will only go farther than the others and stop, which results in unproductive mutations. Also sometimes the muscles spaz out and go shooting off glitching to the top and because it got the furthest it gets that passed on, eventually it they all glitch, but other than that it's fantastic.

Awesome application! Really fun way to demonstrate machine learning. Would be cool to see some more info... Like top 10 fitness results by with link to saved generations, or live fitness score during training.. Also fitness score on the small window with best result of previous gen. I'd also like to see options to prevent phone from sleeping or allow to work in the background. (I would like to see generation 10.000 but I don't want to click all night) :-)

i dig the concept, but there are a few issues. after 5-10 generations the creatures glitch. i've also noticed the best creature often doesn't survive. what happened to "survival of the fittest"? and having some kind of measurement of improvement would be great. it's a fun game that has a long journey ahead

I really like the game but I have a few suggestions 1) make it so we can remove glitcy creatures or have the ai not go for glitch creatures 2) make an option that makes it so the ai can evolve parts on to the creature just for fun 3) make a mode where the ai takes creatures online and makes them compete against your creature and the ainner somtimes takes parts from the loser 4) more parts for mobility and being able to choose what that parts job is like deciding that something is supposed to wings flight and gliding or legs for walking or arms for balance 5) multiple creatures at once so you can compare different creatures easier 6) game mode where instead of competing to be the best at something it is a fight with like teeth and claws. Thank you for taking the time to read this but I will tell you a secret suggestions 1,2, and 3 are the other comments ive decided to mention in this list 4 is also another commenters idea but decided to be a little more specific. Only 5 and 6 were ideas that popped in my head i don't think anyone one else commented those and if they did I didn't see them. Great game amd I hope to see these implemented if they are not to complicated. Sorry for taking so long didn't realize until now.

It's generally fun to watch, but it bugs out all the time and the bones and muscles are all over the place, the candidate then appears to have covered 500m and is 100% fit, but of course next gen without the big it's useless and the whole evolution goes down the drain. Also I can't figure how to save evolved designs.

Edw. J. Apr 22, 2020

Great fun. Would be 5* but a few gripes: 1. Would be useful to have a grid when creating creatures so that bones can be made regular lengths 2 would. like to set evolution so that muscles, joints and bones could be gained/ lossed or change size and position 3. would like to be able to attach muscles in different places rather than just middle of bone - and for muscle positioning to be subject to evolution 4. Would like to be able to speed up evolution process to run faster than real time

Lou. Y. Apr 21, 2019

great concept but needs alot of improvement and or recent updates broke it. like others have said by gen 50 the creatures no matter how complex always start glitching, muscles detach and then from there they start litterally falling to pieces with parts flying all over the screen and presumably they are no longer evolving. itd also be great to see the fitness level scores, to be able to do my own selection, to see a measure of creatures fitness eg distance, hight, speed etc

Survival of the Glitchiest.... Great simulator. Unfortunatly, the most successful generations start to be the ones that can glitch its way across the field. Wish there was an option for selective breeding. This might screw with the original intent of the game, but it really would be an awesome mode. Also, factoring in a creature that flops ahead and becomes immobile is not the most effective, even though it made it the furthest.

Game potential = 10+ Game frustration = 8+ Such a cool idea and the fact that it has infinite possibilities makes it just amazing. However, most of the time you have no idea how to get what you want accomplished actually accomplished. There's no way to nudge the evolution development of your creation one way or another and there's no explanation or visuals showing *why/how* your design evolved this way or that. Without that, it'll never go beyond a 'trial and error'/'just messing around' game.

The only mobile app with true machine learning. Only complaint is the lack of updates, it's been over a year since the last minor update, and seems to have been much long since a major one. I suggest maybe allowing the muscles to contract beyond the starting point. And maybe a grid/coordinate system for placing joints

Squ. T. Apr 1, 2019

This used to be one of my favorite games, well until they decided to update the way the saves work. I had over 60 save files of various creations, and now they are all gone. other than that a great game, but I am just disappointed that all my time and effort is gone. ACTUALLY it's just fine great game 5/5

hat. _. Oct 18, 2018

There is a glitch in the game which causes the creature to glitch out and then the computer thinks this is the best way to advance, so it just starts getting the creatures to glitch out. Other than that it is an impressive bit of self learning software that works perfectly about 40% of the time.

Sev. o. S. Dec 6, 2021

I want to like it but something about the game changed when it was made mobile. The creatures always liked to exploit the physics, but it's way worse on here. Nine times out of ten they reduce to vibrating rapidly to slide across the ground. Just get the desktop app instead.

Gar. S. Jul 11, 2020

It was an amazing game. I have created a simple yet theoretically perfect creature. All you need is 4 joints, two bones and a muscle. They can leap high into the air, fly at ludicrous speeds, and evade obstacles. The only thing left is climbing, yet I'm sure my creature shall overcome it.

See. Jun 5, 2021

I don't know if you're still working on this but often times the creatures just stiffen up and vibrate it's limbs extremely fast, you don't even see the limbs moving but it still glides the creature forward like it's on ice. It really ruins a lot of possible creations because for more complex creatures it'll learn to vibrate before it learns to actually move, in the end they just end up being boring gliding static objects

Dem. Jul 9, 2021

Never gets old, I can play this for hours. The only thing is that it doesn't save the ai (or I'm just not seeing how). Bu overall, game good. Also, a suggestion I have is make conditions, like it can't touch these bones/joints, another is make a rope-like connector that connects to bones and joints.

No adverts, very light jankyness in the mechanics of it, but a good enough simulation game for a phone or tablet to kill plenty of time. Truly a slight mess. A very fun mess, though.

What i think that the game would benefit from is simple coding. What i mean by that is you can write a script of rules that your organism would follow. examples: If [not_moving]=true? Retract muscle1. If [distance_from{bone3}]=40? Retract muscle7. It would make creating complex beings much easier and fun in my opinion, as i have been trying to make a human forever and its super hard, but this would make it so much easier
