FBReader TTS+ Plugin
IMPORTANT: You need Text-To-Speech engine and voices installed on your device to use this app. If you don't have one yet, pickup from Play Store
- the good quality TTS engines there are Acapela, Ivona and SVOX. You may use more than one if you want.
* Bluetooth play/pause and previous/next controls are handled correctly
* Plays in the background and Bluetooth controls are still handled, allowing you for example to use Navigation software on your phone while driving somewhere and listening to your book at the same time, and pausing/resuming playback as needed.
* Android 4.2 and higher
- lock screen widget to pause/resume, next/previous sentence, view book title and progress. This widget can be also used on the home screen under older versions of Android.
* Read by sentences
- the plugin pauses and resumes at individual sentences, instead of entire paragraphs. Upon resume, you don't have to listen from the beginning of a long paragraph again.
* Enhanced control panel to set book language, open system TTS Settings to change speech engine, control speech rate, pitch and volume, more...
* The control panel can be minimized to display only a row of small buttons at the bottom over the main FBReader screen, if you want to watch the text it reads at the same time.
* Sleep timer
* Can highlight individual sentences instead of full paragraphs, but this requires a small code change in the main FBReader code.

ABOUT PERMISSIONS: In ver. 1.5.7 added WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission, needed for TTS activation on some devices.

It's extremely glitchy. It often starts passing my book pages really fast without reading them. Then I have to scroll back and find where I was. At this point, it will do exactly the same every time I try to use the plugin again and restarting the app doesn't help. The only way to fix it is to restart the whole phone. Then I have to start and close the plugin (not the fbreader app) several times and wait until it finally decides to work again. It's been like this for years. No fixes, no updates
I have enjoyed using this plugin for several years now. It has been really great. However, when I updated my phone to a newer one using Android 8, this plugin will no longer work with the system voice. I really like using higher resolution voices, and I cannot use it anymore. ;.;
Not sure what's going on with the recent negative reviews but I guess maybe thier could be a bug on newer versions of Android. Works perfectly on my newest device running 5.1.1. Maybe it pays to be a few steps behind the cutting edge. I hope they get it straightened out before I get a new phone or tablet because I love this app along with FB reader. My go-to ebook reader setup.
So far, so good. A control panel in the notification area would be nice though! Have used it for about 6 hours now...a few issues: It pauses randomly and has to be restarted. The TTS closes when you swipe the notification panel down. It's ok but could be better!
Love this plug in, and have been using it for years. Occasional disruptions, but otherwise satisfactory. Most valuable is the pronunciation dictionary, where you can change how a word is rendered (e.g. Ma-ree-ah or Ma-rye-ah, for Maria.)
Previous experience is superb, but now it doesn't work well: after I start tts+, I turn the screen off, tts+ reads like several sentences and then stops reading aloud. But it continues reading text so that when I turn the screen on I see another page and another part of the text selected.
I'm currently using it with Android 9 but have used it for quite a few years now. It seems to perform the same as it always has, slightly glitchy but still a real game changer. Any e-pub book can be enjoyed while driving, ironing or whatever. What is not to like?
My most used app, but the last 24 hours, it won't continue to work if the screen sleeps. This makes it nearly useless, as, if I place my phone in my pocket without screen sleep, random movement will stop the app altogether. please fix. will alter review when it works as usual.
Very practical and useful for keeping hands and the eyes free while still enjoying your favourite books....my only feedback and suggestion is that please make the plugin show a notification and show the play and. pause option there too or maybe a widget would be more user-friendly~🤔😅
Very often misses the first letter of a word in the beginning of a paragraph or sentence. Doesn't recognize questions and read these as regular sentence. Only speaks in default voice, no matter what you choose in options.
Extremely annoying, any tap on the screen, even pulling notification bar down, stops the voice. Need to tap again, select speak+, and press play again every time. The speaking shouldn't stop unless closing the speak bar.
I'm looking for TTS app & testing free version of FBReader with TTS plugin on a Samsung 9+. Included female voice is pretty annoying & though I select another voice it doesn't switch. App is also a bit glitchy. Won't be purchasing.
Fails to start 9 out of 10 times, I have to stop and start it and/or reboot phone and hope for the best. When it does work it's fine, in the rare instances that I can get it to start.
Downloaded and, after a little bit of playing around, seems to be working fine. Hw, it seems to read only my epub files, not pdf or djvu files, something perhaps the developers could look to incorporating in the future. Four stars.
Love this app and have for years but it no longer works at all. The application never opens and it never shows as a option in the menu of the reader
After OS upgrade to Android 9 it stops reading soon after the screen is switched off. Tried disabling battery optimisation but did not help.
It was a good reader of books, now is really bad with the French accent when reading, . Voice 1 is good but no option to select that preferred voice .
The plugin worked well with Android v8, however, I bought Pixel 3a (Android 9) and play/stop/controll buttons are no longer working. Please fix them.
Every time I leave a book and come back to it it doesn't resume with English but forces me to re-choose English instead of Bengila or whatever it is. It doesn't like the system default anymore either
It is gleachy, but still comfortable than other apps i tried. The problem is that after latest Samsung software update i t stopped working and no longer can be found in google play
Suddenly, it stopped using my preferred voice and keep using the default voice. Very annoying.
I love this plugin and have been using fbreader for years. But for some reason now this plugin no longer works? If there's something I can do to troubleshoot please let me know bc I really love this app :(
use to love this but last few months it wont open on my note 9. I can read the books fine but I can't read out loud. it wont even open anymore
New Edit: All users, pls don't use this plugin, just use default tts voice inside this app, it's better than this plugin. Done... TTS plugin is not very reliable, especially when moving between paragraphs, the delay time is too long, even though it has set the delay time to 0 ms, it has no effect at all, I hope that in the future it can be improved like to the Moon Reader or Librera Reader TTS engines..
