Love this. Very much recreates the atmosphere of reading the books, minus the hassle of dice, pencils and paper. Uses all the original art and theres even background ambient music you can choose. The dice system is fair and works well. Its nostalgic and very good. Does make you realise how basic the combat was in these gamebooks though, if roll a low starting skill, you have no chance. But still, very enjoyable . Just needs more books adding to the collection. P.s when are you adding more books?
Same problem as a few others here - gets stuck on the loading screen with the yellow cog which goes on forever. I waited almost 10 minutes for it to load with no success. I'm not waiting that amount of time to play each time, even if it were to work. Shame, as I loved these books as a kid, good job I still have them because I can't play these...EDIT: finally got it to work! The price of each gamebook is very reasonable although takes up a bit of space but works fine & is great fun on mobile.
Awesome collection of Fighting Fantasy game books to play on my tablet or mobile devices. I get to learn more about RPG game books and RPG pen and paper games. I recently got the official first book in paperback, and I also got Nintendo Switch game, and I got to try it in digital format. Hope they add entire series collection of Fighting Fantasy books and Advanced Fighting Fantasy game books series. Add more interesting information about FF universe, gameplay updates, and graphics quality.
Possibly even better then the books, well certainly more convenient. And, you can still cheat if you want.
It is just like the "choose your own adventures" books from back in the day. This hits all of the nostalgia feels, plus D&D style combat and fun. I am so excited to play this. I have probably gone through half of the possible outcomes so far. It's incredible. The first book available is definitely a great introduction to the series. 10/10 would recommend to any and all seeking for a great time passer and exciting narrative.
All the magic of the original Fighting Fantasy adventure game books, but with automatic inventory and dice-rolling. A very polished product, it features 11 of the original Jackson/Livingstone adventures plus the 'lost' book Bloodbones. The artwork uses the Puffin 'green stripe' covers, which will also appeal to many. Could only really be improve by adding further adventures (Steve Jackson's Sorcery! is not present, nor are the many hard-to-find books by other authors.)
Could've sworn I wrote this review this morning... Ah well. To summarise, this is great if you're a fan of Fighting Fantasy or adventure books. Yeah, you have to pay a small amount for each book but it's worth it. Presentation is fantastic, adding a few bells and whistles to the experience. Only two flaws: There's no rotation lock so the screen will randomly flip when you change reading position. And: When you die you're taken back to the library instead of a reload/restart/quit screen.
For your inner-hero-child. It's a superb adaptation of the physical books. The coloured images are well made. The map system could've been much better achieved, as it seems nothing like a proper map. There's no logic, no cardinal orientation. They're just a sequence of some of the steps you've had, with no spatial references.
I love this implementation of the Fighting Fantasy game books. It's really slick and stays true to the original feel. Having your fights, equipment and clues all stored for you is brilliant when playing on a phone. The only star deducted is because I had previously bought the titles separately and would have to buy those again to fit in with "Classics". I do understand that the coding issues make it not as simple as importing them, but a reduction in price or similar gesture would be nice. :-)
The Fighting Fantasy classics are here. The character sheet and the inventory is easy to manage as everything is being written down automatically. Dice rolling is done by the computer in manner that lets you influence the outcome by hitting the dice just before they settle down entirely. The bookmarks let you continue your adventure from a certain point instead of having to start over again. You can change font size and type and you can read as much as you like without getting tired.
Great fun reliving this blast from the past. One word of advice though, either use bookmarks or free play. While playing book 5 I have found two places where I didn't have any of the items needed to continue, nor could I retrace a step to choose the other option. The first time I had to start from scratch which was annoying.
Does exactly what it says on the tin (man) - lovely digital presentations of classic Fighting Fantasy books with built in hero sheet and dice mechanics. As much fun if not more than playing the original books, and in a handy package. The free book is great and the others are cheap to purchase. I hope they will continue to add new books, personally I'd love to see Creature of Havoc and Skylord. Would be brilliant to eventually build it into a complete FF library!
*EDIT: Lost a star and deleted it when you increased the price for each book, that's too much for how short they are* The old books you can buy are great and this app handles them well! But the Bloodbones Book it comes with is TERRIBLE; it doesn't fit the style of the Jackson & Livingstone originals at all and is very poorly written & structured (it's even rife with spelling errors). You should change it so the player can CHOOSE which book they get free instead.
Old-fashioned cyoa game with interesting story and challenging puzzles but sometimes depends on knowing which item to take or where to go and in what order, well ahead of time. So you need to use bookmarks a lot and be ready to go back if things don't work out right. That can be tedious at times.
It's a great concept for books that are great fun, however there are flaws. Creature of havoc has not been corrected for the original editor error that gets you stuck in a loop meaning it's impossible to progress. In a free game this would be annoying, in something paid for it smacks of bad research and inadequate testing
Fantastic Fighting Fantasy app! I loved these books when I was younger and this app is a great way to experience them again. The mood music provides an atmospheric touch, particularly when the music goes more upbeat when you battle a monster. The different options available (bookmarks and the occasional cheeky rewind) adds to the experience. I've never left a review of an app before but feel this is well with anyone's time. Thanks and keep adding new books please!
Everything is awesome except the map is completely broken, in forest of doom anyway. Before the books were consolidated into one app the forest of doom app had an awesome map that you could actually use to see where you are and where you haven't been, the current map mixes up east and west and criss crosses all over the place and is completely broken. Please fix it and it will be a 5 star game.
A fantastic digital version of the classic gamebooks. If you enjoy modern "choose your path" games then it's well worth checking this out to experience the sword & sorcery world that came before them and allowed players to "choose their own adventure" whilst computer games were still in their infancy. If you've played FF books before, you'll be pleased to find all the wonderful art still present + a nice system for inventory and dice checks. Would be great to see the full series added over time!
Fun at first. Got to where I needed to go for the adventure. But I didn't have an option item, so I died.... No way to try and save myself. That was it. I get being penalized for it, but if it's a very specific item needed to finish, then maybe it shouldn't be sold at a shop like it was. Things like this ruin it for me, and show a lack of good writing. Having done many of these and played DnD for many years, I'm out.
This is an abandoned app. The screen rotates all the time with slight movements and nothing locks it in place. I can't read one sentence before it's swapping again. It's been going on for years and is still not fixed. Get your game book fix elsewhere and skip this mess.
One problem and one problem only: Lag. Additionally it would be great to have the player's basic combat stats visible at all times on the top of the screen, because keeping check of Stamina Skill and Luck penalties are very important in FF, and while the Adventure Log hides itself after a few seconds, it becomes increasingly annoying to wake up the bottom interface to check my stats.
After nigh 20 years, I got to play Creature of Havoc again. The entire format feels true to the original, even if you're not scribbling with a pencil yourself. It took quite a few attempts tho. To those of you who got stuck in a loop, know that this particular adventure is difficult and only has one true very narrow path. However, once you've gotten a hold of it, you can complete the adventure in about two to three hours of casual play. A tip for beginners: get the black amulet. Ignore the rest
I just finished Bloodbones, the book that comes with the game. Lots of fun. Use a lot of bookmarks. The chapter graphics don't load half the time. This only affected gameplay on one graphic puzzle. Would have given 5 stars if graphics worked all the time. The graphics that loaded were excellent.
Loads rather slowly and the books are a bit too expensive by 1/2 ($1-2 not $1.99 thats just silly) but to buy original copies of the books would cost as much and the interface is a fun and easy way to enjoy the books...again that slow load time reallt bothers me and i can edit audio in real time so...yeah i dunno load times bother me. I would also make the arrow page and choice buttons larger. over all just too expensive and slow
Love it. Only complaint is it is unrealistic to fight opponents one at a time. For example if you're fighting three of them you fight the first one , if you beat him you move on to the second one Etc in real life you'd be fighting them all at the same time . But its no big deal. Otherwise it is the best text based rpg with stats Ive found.
Can't make a critic of gamebooks written back in the 80s so in short: it's not great but at least it's entertaining Just try it for yourself and see if you like that kind of things. Now this app: I really appreciate the graphic design, the quality of the logo, the animations, how the book library is layed out and the option to sort it differently. Now I wish for players like me there was a difficulty mode that allowed us to go back, especially during the character creation.
