Man, I love FF1, but this app is so poorly executed. The touch controls are finicky, and you have to be connected to internet the entire time so it can check to see if you bought the game (it takes half a minute and it does it every time). And the icing on this terrible cake is the fact that every single time you leave the app, no matter for what reason or how long, the app checks the license online, and goes back to the title screen. You better save always, because there is no auto save.
This app desperately needs an update. The controls either go extremely slow or are so fast you cannot control the game. Also, if you chose to switch apps while in the game you lose all progress and are forced to endure the lengthy process of verification that you are allowed to play the app once again. Updated: they've fixed the switching issue. Now they just need to fix the fact that your characters run around so fast you can barely control them.
Don't like the touch screen aspect. I was excited to see a digital version of the psp version of ff1 but the touch screen is too awkward for me. I was really looking forward to playing it what a shame. The game is a replica of ff1 on the nes with all the bugs gone and I mean that in the literal sense. They just upgraded the graphics and took the bugs out. No beastiary, you can't organize your items etc. If you played the original and like the controls you'll love it
It's a good game for the most part. The game autosaves constantly, which is nice; but it spends about fifteen seconds checking the license via the Internet (required) every time you use the app after another app or turning the screen off. The touchscreen controls are as good as they could be, but this game does not support controllers.
I recommend for any final fantasy fans that played the original. Same game and music you know and love. It's easier, but a nice nostalgic experience. I haven't had any glitches on my OnePlus6(9.0/pie) and I'm a few hours in. The controls can be a bit slippy which makes going through some doors frustrating. I dislike no sound options because the menu/cursor noises are way too loud compared to the music. Requiring an internet connection won't impact me, but I could see that being a deal breaker for many.
Game crashes constantly. I can't even make it out of the starter city. Completely unplayable, and unfortunately I bought it years ago, but I never had played it completely through, so I can't return it. Was planning on a long term goal of playing all the Final Fantasy games in order from start to finish and now I am unable to and can't return it. So disappointed in SE for charging top dollar on the mobile platform, but not offering any support or updates for such a big name game. '
Enjoying the game, but there are two serious drawbacks. The app restarts every time you leave it, taking 10 seconds to check your license. Major time waste. The map also appears to be glitched, as once you move to the enlarged map, the navigation buttons don't do anything and you can't return to the full map.
First, If you're a fan and want to play on your phone, get it. Second, the controls aren't that bad for a mobile port. You can hit the red button to go from fast to slow. You can long press the party info box for a world map. Third, Square really should include three bonus dungeons, that's a bummer not a reason to not get the game. Four, it's FF1. It's great, but it's a classic game... quit complaining.
I'm a big fan of this game, been playing since NES, and have played most versions (NES, GBA, PS, PSP) too many times through to admit. The movement controls on this version are horrible and very frustrating. Also frustrating that when you switch to another app and come back to the game, it has to reload and then use the internet to reauthorize. If it wasn't at it's core FFI, I'd give it 1 star.
I played this game on my Nokia Lumia 640 (WP8) before and was amazed by it that now I have it on my new S8+ now. After playing it for a bit, I noticed that the navigation for moving around is extremely sensitive and no way to fix it yourself because I have to time it just right to enter a door in a city or even a castle. Again, this game is amazing but unfortunately due to the lack of stability to the navigation for moving around, I can't keep up with the speeds that is set. EDIT: Typo/reword
Owned the original NES cartridge , and the PSX port. This is easily the worst version of this game. The menu system is very awkward with oversized icons and too few rows on screen at a time coupled with an overly sensitive scrolling mechanism. The dpad is extremely clunky. They couldn't even be bothered to loop the damned music. Anywhere. Why on earth squenix decided to put this pile of trash out as the app-store version, I'll never know. Absolute shame, as it's such a good game.
Crashes quite a bit and the d-pad controls are sketchy at best. Constantly have to retap the screen to get the directional pad to reappear. If you can get past that, it's the same decent, fun game it's always been. Also, no way (that I know of) to get to the tile puzzle game while in the ship. Kind of a bummer. Playing on a Galaxy S6...maybe that's part of the problem?
I love FF, when I heard that the first game was going to be an app game I was really excited. I have issues with the fact that I need Internet service to play this game, but I can just deal with that, no big deal. But when I play the game a major issue comes up that I cannot ignore. Whenever I go into battle, the audio cuts out and leaves me in silence. I thought that bug was fixed in the update, but instead the wave sounds from the beginning won't stop! Please fix this I beg you Square!
The always online connection kills this game for me. Every time you pause the app to check something else it restarts the entire game to make sure you bought the license. Kind of kills the mobile aspect, also if there is no internet connection then you aren't playing at all. On the plus side the game autosaves just about every second so if you do accidentally close the app you can pick up right where you left off. The controls leave a lot to be desired as well.
Only complaint: I hate that there's no way to organize your inventory. Sort buttons puts all potions on top, I want my magic items there as that would be far more useful, and less annoying to have to scroll through my entire inventory just to find the mage staff/heal helm, etc. Otherwise, so much fun and nostalgia, and lots of other improvements.
Overall, a nice port of an old classic. The updated graphics and music are nice and the translation is better than the original. They also did some rebalancing to make the game MUCH easier than I remember. This includes changes to the available items as well as changing the magic system from X spells-per-level to a generic pool of MP. My only complaints are: 1. The graphics for effect spells almost always glitch on my OnePlus 5. 2. The o- screen controls are pretty terrible, but still usable.
This is a remake of the original, so the bugs that plagued the NES release are gone. It's a little short compared to most FF games, but considering the price I'd say that makes sense. I love how the game doesn't hold your hand; you have to actually put some thought into things and get hints to figure out where you need to go. Controls are updated for touchscreen use, which makes the gameplay much easier than some of the other mobile FFs, specifically 7
Playable, but more content available on other versions of the game. Also, anytime I leave the game window to check a text message or get a phone call, the game resets back to the home screen and I lose my progress. Very infuriating. Wish this bug would be fixed and I'd throw it a few more stars.
Great game. They finally fixed the whole restarting everytime you change to a different app. You still need to be connected to the net for a license check, but I can get over that. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 star, is because the game is still so fast that it's hard to control in dungeons; Even if you push the Red button to slow it down.
I have never played the original game before, so I can't really say much about how this port compares. It seems to work fine, my only major complaint is that the character movement is really fast. This normally would be a pro rather than a con, but with the touch controls I find it difficult to control the movement, it feels... slippery for lack of a better description. I tried to use my bluetooth controller to remedy this, but there is not controller support. Fun gameplay otherwise.
A classic for sure. The story is pretty basic, but the journey itself feels very rewarding. The updated character sprites are very nice. The only gripes I have are the awful touch screen road and the inability to see the names of enemies you're against while you are choosing your own actions for that turn. You can see them after the turn has been initiated, but by then it's too late to change your actions until the next turn. Still a great game, and a fantastic way to play it, in my opinion.
Good game, horrendous execution. Sleeping the screen or using any other app resets the game, all progress lost if not saved so make sure you don't get any phone calls. starting the game, which includes the above issue requires a license check for around 10 seconds prior to starting the game. These two facts obsolete the game on my mind. controls were okay but would be better if more like final fantasy vi.
Ok, the license check is annoying. (Wait 15-20 seconds even if you minimize the screen and back to the load screen you go!) The use of MP instead of spell slots makes the game easier. Super speed then turbo ultra is a bit annoying when trying to land the airship. There is no realistic way of tap over a square. Game play was fairly solid, albeit significantly easier than the original due to ethers, hi potions an MP.
Looking at the game itself and with the differences on the mobile version, this game is still a personal favourite. It is as fun as ever to wander the world of the 1st Final Fantasy. Key features include a 36 hour adventure, a customizable party setup, where you can even change your party members names, and a classic RPG turn-based battle system. You do need an internet connection in order for the game to work because of a DRM, but it isn't much of a bother in return for a great JRPG.
It's an absolutely solid game. Being able to experience the beginning of the franchise on my phone was too good to pass up. BUT there's a huge caveat. Every time you start it up, turn off your phone, or switch to a different app it has to confirm its license with SE. It takes a few seconds, yeah, but it's supremely frustrating having to get it to reload even if you switch your phone off accidentally. Find any other way to experience this classic; it's not worth the building frustration.
