Fish Washington

-=< The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife is excited to announce a new Sport Fishing Regulations Mobile Application for Washington State!

This is an early access application release for user convenience. Final rules and content will be published to the application ahead of opening day in April 2018. Please refer to the official published pamphlet and emergency rules (e-regs) available on the agency website as the definitive source of Washington State fishing rules. >=-

Washington State offers anglers some of the most diverse fishing opportunities available anywhere in the world. In a single weekend, you can dig for clams, troll for salmon, drop a pot for Dungeness crab, fly fish for steelhead, trout or bass, jig for halibut or rockfish, and bait fish for catfish, tuna, lingcod or sturgeon. Maintaining this variety of fishing opportunities necessitates correspondingly diverse―and sometimes complex―fishing regulations.

To make these regulations easier to understand, Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife developed the Fish Washington mobile app.
Browse for places to fish.

Tap on a body of water to see what you can fish for and retain, gear restrictions (if any), etc.

Search for your favorite fishing spot and see the regulations; for today and for that upcoming trip.

Filter for target species.

Share your experience or favorite fishing spot with friends and family.

Get real-time notifications about changes to regulations, emergency rules, etc.

Being new to Washington state, I was overwhelmed by the difference in regulation between species and bodies of water, but this app has been extremely helpful in helping determine what you can take from where, and scouting new waters. It can be a little glitchy sometimes, but overall a decent app. I wish more states had apps like this.

This app would be usable if it did not lock you out if you are not in a cell service area. Do not rely on this app for waypoints or navigation in the hills.

Super glitchy, stalls out, no actual information on fishing regulations... Pretty much what you'd expect from an app provided by the State of WA...

It says "regulations are out of date" but it won't load the regulations. I uninstalled and reinstalled. Still won't work.

As of 2/24/22, on a samsung s10 with all current updates, all features seem to work as expected. No crashes, hangups, or other bugs experienced. This app is easy to navigate and easy to check/ verify any given body of water. Thank you, devs! The only other feature i would want is the ability to set species and maybe even fishing style "profiles" that highlight parts of the map that are or aren't in season for a given date vs having to click on every body of water one can think of when planning.

A very usable app that gets used lots, almost daily, or at least it sure seems like it.

Leaves out some area rules. Still have to refer to actual pamflet. Contradictory to fishing pamflet in some rules. Cant depend on app alone. Need the pamflet too, to decifer what is legal.

Wonderful app, it's like having a fishing regulation pamphlet in you back pocket!!

I am being generous with 2 stars. One can see the intent of the app, but it misses the mark on many points. Each time one exits and reloads the app, it downloads a massive geolocation file, which I would never want to do if not on WiFi. The rules are sort of okay, but could be a lot more interactive and helpful. I do not see any linking to fishing reports or such, which would be very helpful. All in all it is a disappointing waste of State (our) resources spent on what could have potential.

Continuous updates are slow. I do like the regulations tie in to body of water! It has great potential. 4 or 5 if glitci are fixed. Now I cannot use the app. It is stuck on this stupid page and will not stay on the map page. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Still keeps looping me back to feedback page. Please fix it. Android still not working. Longer than a week.

Seems to work reasonably well for what I use it for, however the down loads with updates can take awhile. Obviously this is required if you want the latest rule changes. My biggest gripe is that twice I have found it to not contain the latest rule change in effect which is bound to result in an interesting conversation with an enforcement officer as this is advertised as "The free mobile app is designed to convey up-to-the-minute fishing regulations for every lake, river, stream and marine area in the state"

This app was AMAZING when it first came out in 2018. Now however I can't get it to work even though it says it's fully updated. (I left it open all night once, connected to wifi trying to update because it doesn't actively show you that it's updating). When it functions it's awesome but right now it is useless and taking up over a gigabyte of space on my phone. Here's hoping someone reads this and fixes the damned thing.

This app has the potential to be really great but and the concept is awesome. I have used it in the past and it worked alright but lately, for various reasons (most recent continually reverting to Google play) , it won't. Once they get the bugs ironed out and they can manage the amount of cell data and storage space the app uses, it will be very useful to correctly follow what are otherwise fairly complicated and hard - to - understand regulations.

Won't even run. Just crashes. Update: got it running a few months later. But then I found a fatal flaw: it's flat out wrong! We went out fishing on the last day of salmon season; the app didn't show any salmon opening in that area. So I double and triple checked WDFW website, including all emergency changes, and sure enough, app was wrong. Such a basic programming error. Is there any testing at all?

Using a Google Pixel 2 with up-to-date software. - Cannot open the app. I just downloaded it, agreed to everything and when I tap on it to open it (both on the app and in Google Play) it immediately closes and takes me back to Google plays page that shows the option to download, uninstall or open. When I try again to open it, it does the same thing. So, nice idea but it doesn't work.

This app is great when it works correctly. Often, I will launch the app and it downloads updates but it seems to not always be capable of following through with installing updates in process and it gets hung up. I have been successful in getting it to run by restarts, data clears, and by removing the app and reinstalling it. Also, when add my own points of interest I have not been able to remove them.

A. G. u. May 15, 2019

Mostly useless. Half of the time spent in the app is of the maps updating, which it doesn't tell you that it's doing. So you sit there and click the body of water that you want, and it does nothing. Restart the app, body of water disappears all together. Restart the app, clicking the body of water does nothing. Restart the app, it works. Recieve random pop up of "Do you want to rate our app?" Click yes. App crashes. When it does work, I suppose its nice. No emergency rules though.

WDFW has once again failed. I spend time hunting and fishing in South Dakota where they have an app that is similar. The only difference is it actually works. it takes way too long for the maps to load on the wdfw version. Once they load it's not intuitive and difficult to find the information you need unless all you need is boat launch information. So basically "useless" is the word I would like you to absorb from my review.

With as much as we have to spend on licenses you would think they could pay the money to have a decent app programmer to upkeep this app to where we don't have to uninstall and reinstall several times to get it to work, especially during salmon season. The most useful time to have an app that can keep up on the constant rule changes. Truly disappointed.

App hasn't been opening, but now without an update and no change to permissions it is opening again. Hopefully, multi-month outages are not the norm. App is convenient but does lack some info on the website and doesn't link to the page you would need to reference when info isn't available in app. With a bit more complete info and stable access this could be a great tool. I would love to see the fish species and prospect info from there site. And help identifying your catch.

A. G. u. May 12, 2019

1.16 GB app size, files need updating regularly, and I still don't know what it's supposed to do. All it's basically good for is showing me county lines. I can't search for fishing spots, can't toggle features on the map to show me streams or lakes, and can only view statewide regulations within the app. I have better luck searching online or checking another fishing app to find possible spots. Then I have to check online to make sure there aren't any emergency regulations.

Saw an ad for this app at the DOL, thought "hey cool let's see my tax dollars at work!".. I've reinstalled this 208MB app twice, along with the 20 separate downloads it has you do EACH TIME you open the app.. never got it to work, even once. Great internet connection, I know that's not the problem. The app finally loaded a map at one point, but that's all it was, zero information, and it didn't work again after that.

Tyl. A. Jun 11, 2021

Great Idea, Terrible Execution I love this app, but it always takes forever to start working so I never use it. By the time it finally loads & works I've already given up & went elsewhere for the info. It desperately needs a setting that allows it to automatically update so it's ready when you need it. Please keep working on it! I'll check in again next year! If I buy a license that is. WDFW is deterring me from that too.

using a pixel 2xl, latest version of Android. keeps crashing upon opening the app. initally the app is able to open upon installation. it downloaded a ton of files on my phone. but on subsequent tries (even when I was sure everything finished downloading), I see a "your device is currently downloading the initial data" blurb and gray screen, and then the app crashes.

VIP. A. Sep 4, 2020

Absolutely, the worst. I honestly sort of expected to half baked, poorly designed app from the state of Washington. technologically, the state is about 40 years behind the times so my bar for this app was really low. Yeah. so after months of being unusable altogether as updates weren't rolling out and regulations were out of date, now it is started kicking me back to the play store download link for itself every time I try to open it. Not only am I uninstalling it, but with malice.

A. G. u. Sep 9, 2019

I've downloaded this app & uninstalled it 3 different times within a 6 month period in hopes it'd work better. I love to fish, thought this app would be perfect to help me figure out where the best places to fish are. It's very frustrating with a simple question of when does the salmon season end. I've tried finding it on Google but it keeps saying download the PDF for the pamphlet or get the mobile app, my point is something so simple shouldn't be so hard to find on a fishing app. Please fix it

A. G. u. Aug 3, 2019

Unusable. Map doesn't load, and when you try and change the map type to try and get it to load, it crashes. Disappointing. And contrary to your update about patching the issue with multiple deltas downloading, it's still a persistent issue. Please license someone else to build your app next time.

A. G. u. Feb 28, 2020

Please, I can not get the maps to work it just says they will be interactive after updating. Well I allowed every permission possible for the app, installed, uninstalled and reinstalled many times. I have let it run overnight on WiFi and 4G LTE both it still never updates. Please someone fix it it could be a great app and very helpful if it worked. 28FEB19

This app is terrible and really worthless. This is not very surprising coming from Washington State. The map never loads and if it does it will freeze if you try to move. The rest of the information is pointless and just ridiculous. Given the extremely detailed and confusing regulations in this state a working app would be nice. This app makes it even more confusing. Pretty bad that you would be way better off with the paper regulations.
