Overall a very good app. We've used it while traveling around the US for the past 5 months. Been very helpful; it's all about quality of reviews to know whether a spot will work well or not, especially with a trailer. The app itself has some minor bugs (and it doesn't appear to have been updated for a few years, so I'm not confident they'll ever be addressed or if the app will be maintained in the future). I would HAPPILY pay a one-time premium to help support it's development.
In theory it's a fantastic app, it's very useful. However it's extremely user unfriendly. It rarely loads the map when you're searching for something, it doesn't recognize when you have data vs when you don't. It's also very poorly organized, it's difficult to go back to find the reviews you've written (which should be easier to put directly into a trip). I've been using it because it's the only app that lets me find campsites but it really needs to be redone.
It is a very handy resource! It has a lot of information, most of which is provided by other campers, so it's info you're really interested in. I found the app to be a little bit less responsive than I would like, which is why it's only four stars. As the navigation feature is in beta, I have no comments there for the purposes of this review. However, the app does provide coordinates, so you can easily transpose them to a mapping app.
I work in a field where camping and travel is basically a requirement. This app is incredible and by far the best so far. Shows different layers of land ownership (BLM, FS, NPS, etc) which tells me were Backcountry camping would be allowed, or when I need to find a campsite, which are comprehensively shown on the map. Plus, there is elevation, fire danger, and smoke maps! Best app to come along so far. Just wish I had found it sooner
I think this is one of the first...if not THE first app I've ever rated. I've only just used it for a few minutes and am extremely impressed. I wish I'd have known about this earlier this year while on a 3 month roadtrip. The app actually includes everything I need to know while traveling on the road and more. As a remote worker, I find the cell phone signal filter and service map incredibly useful... This app is so well done. Using it this weekend. Thank you for building it, great UX!!!
This is a awesome app for travelers of all kinds. You can see camping spot based on price which is amazing. Also you can review and interact with others on the app. It tells you things like how the phone service is places, near by things, and so much more. I highly recommend they also made a helpful Youtube video walking you through itπ Thumbs way up, also the ability to link your Instagram is a great bonus.
What a spectacular camping app! You developers seem to have thought of everything. My hat's off to you, and thank you so much for writing this! Hey all you campers! This app has so many features that others don't: cell coverage, weather, crowded-ness, road conditions, noise, shade, and any of these as affected by season-->spring, summer, fall, winter. You can also save your favorites. What this app needs is a lot more entries, so download it and contribute, please!
Just started using the app. Compared to a few others that are out there, the database still needs a lot of work, but the usability and features that are built in are incredible. It's also the best designed camping locator app out there. If you like a clean interface with well thought out design, I suggest you check it out. Question for the developer: will the app be adding support for paid campgrounds as well? We use a few different apps to find regular campgrounds, but all the filtering options you provide here would be great for that since we don't really do a whole lot of free camping.
It initially seemed useful for a trip which I am making. But it has problems with route mapping. It doesn't actually map routes directly. It uses map apps installed on the phone. This is not necessarily an issue. But I have multiple map apps on my phone. FreeRoam initially gave selection options for which map app to use. But it permanently connected the the app which I first tried, which could not map a route. So I cannot map routes which are offroad because there does not appear to be a way to get the map choices back for directions.
Some really good information including cellular coverage and noise. However, amenities filters are worthless. Probably because not entered into database, but when I select 30 Amp electric, it wipes out all of the Poconos. Select a Max price, those missing prices disappear, which is almost all. This has a lot of great potential, hopefully an update and data input will round this out!
I've searched and used every major RV trip planner and this is a combination of the best of those (AllStays, RV Parky, etc) AND about 90% MORE of the features I wish those apps had. I've spent the past few hours exploring every detail of the app and not only do they work in "real life" scenarios but they're intuitive and require almost no learning to use. I'm part of the geezer demographic so not likely their target but this app transcends market segments. Great message/mission/implementation...
The filters are amazing! I am currently using it to find a free campsite, with good T-Mobile signal, where the average minimum temperature for September is greater than 50Β° F. All in one app. Without bouncing back and forth between screens. I just set the filters and it shows me all campsites that meet my criteria.
Great app. The UI is beautiful and using it is easy. There are a ton of great features including social options, trip planning, and offline mode. I think in tje future it will be widely used. My only gripe is the lack of sites or inaccuracy of sites. It seems not many users exist, and i have reached out to the Dev and he admits the weakness. I think that will change in time. Over all, great app
Just got the app and I'm still learning, but it's very clean and the UI seems pretty intuitive. Haven't run into and ads, or a pay-wall, but does have a system through an Amazon affiliates link to still help the developer. Very cool feature to have, and no adds! Definitely a crowd sourcing type of app, so definitely download it and come add to the community!
Enjoy this app. Took me a moment to learn how to use it efficiently, but it was me not the app. Was able to plan my entire 3255 mile 17 day trip. Would like the ability to add alternates cause we all know that plans dont always work out. That way when I show up and the site is not available or what I expected I have a second or third choice all ready
So far, I really like this app. I'm using it for travel from S. California to, and throughout, much of Texas extensively. If it continues to work this well, it's a godsend! Especially when you've never been, "wherever you're going" at all before. Like, an "in app link" telling you definitively weather Texas allows sleeping at a public "rest area" or "picnic area" overnight. It's great!
FreeRoam is lighter & faster than many other camp-locating apps. The UI is a little confusing at first, but if you dig deep enough you'll find many useful features. Only 4 stars because the trip planning feature is clunky & I can't add a place without answering a lot of questions that I don't always have answers to.
Best app for discovering new RV boondocking sites. Has a satellite map with overlays for BLM and USFS lands, along with overlays for cell signals (Verizon, AT&T et al). You can pick out a BLM area, for example, and zoom in to find dirt roads and clearings. Then, you can save spots you've found, and share them to your Google Maps for navigation. Campendium and FreeCampsites still has far more reviews, but they dont have the tools to discover new boondocking sites that FreeRoam has.
We are just getting into this lifestyle and to see how thorough and thoughtful the app is; I am blown away! Being able to filter for rig size, cell phone coverage, etc. As a redhead, I am always looking for a shady spot. When I saw that I could filter in how much shade was available, I was ecstatic! π Very thoughtful and I look forward to getting a lot of use out of it!
App has potential, but campground names are in a fuzzy white font and are completely illegible. Street names are also in white on a grey background and are illegible. Also, there should be an option to load the app onto an SD card rather than in device memory as can be done with other apps, such as Wikicamps. Offline data would be helpful when wifi or cell coverage is unavailable. REDUCED RAYING TO ONE STAR. Almost a year later, and the font issues haven't been fixed. App is unuseable.
This app has an overlay of BLM land and US Forest Service lands on zoomable satellite maps of the United States. By checking areas in the western US which I am familiar with, it appears to be accurate. I have never seen this many features combined in one space. Remarkable and extremely handy for someone like myself who travels without much advance planning in a self contained truck camper and who wants to locate reachable public lands near evening, stay for the night and leave in the morning.
This app is indispencible for traveling by RV or car. For years, I've been using multiple apps and online services (such as BLM maps and forester service land overlays on google earth) but FreeRoam has everything in one place and it's very fast and user friendly, plus they're improving it all the time and take user input very seriously. This App will save me HOURS of time and stress trying to find a safe and legal place to stay in my camper van while traveling and working.
A good idea but falls short ... You can look up campgrounds but no websites or links. You have to leave the app and search for the info. Lots of them have no online presence or info. Not very useful. Trip mapping is clunky and not intuitive at all. Even when you think you've created, selected a destination, NOTHING!
