Fretboard Hero

Fretboard Hero is a game that improves your guitar skills. This application was created in collaboration with professional guitarists in order to help people memorize notes on a guitar's fretboard. Before the clock runs out guess the correct note and earn higher scores and higher skills. The more points you get the cooler the guitars you unlock and don't forget to test your skills in the real world ! What are we talking about?
Why should you know the notes on your fretboard ?

Here are a few reasons why:1. Understand the music your are playing
- learning the notes increases your insight into music, making it easier to recreate and compose songs.2. Increase your improvising skills
- familiarize yourself with all the notes and have them always at your fingertips3. Speak the same language as musicians
- notes (like words) allow you to write music and communicate with your fellow bandmates4. Read sheet music more easily
- reading and playing standard notation becomes much easier when you know notes location on a fretboard5. Take more out of music theory
- knowing notes makes music theory concepts much more applicable6. Transpose songs, riffs and solos to other parts of the fretboard
- play them all over the fretboard and find out where they sound best7. Build a foundation for ear training
- by playing Fretboard Hero, slowly but surely you will improve you ear and help to make a connection between what you hear and what you see

Besides all these benefits, here is what makes our game unique:+adaptive learning curve+increasingly diffucult gameplay+precise and detailed statistics on reaction times+highscore tracking+leaderboards+high quality unlockable content+ability to share results via email, facebook and twitter+high quality sounds+more features coming soon!

I've used it for about a year to work on visualizing the notes on the fretboard. Has it made me a pro guitar player? Uh, no. Has it helped me become more proficient at finding the note positions on the fretboard? Definitely. And the happy part of this app is, it makes rote memorization a game, not just a tough & boring study session. The app isn't super advanced and the sound/graphics are basic. But it's a great tool for any student of the axé.

Good practice app. I like that there are no ads. Well thought out.I would make 2 changes. There is no exit button and the back button doesn't take you out of the app. Second, in the scales portion, there are side arrows to switch you to different scales. Would be nice to have an easier way to select another scale like a dropdown menu or something.

I found this fretboard trainer pretty decent. One major issue is no stop/close button. There is no way to get out of training for instance if you disabled lives and time. Back button doesn't work, so no way out of the app either. I like that it keeps different statistics. GUI can be improved too, but this is not a deal breaker.

Favorite Guitar App! The new features are flashy and add a lot of options. I liked the old version and look forward to learning the new one! Edit... there should be different high scores for challenge and training. Since I can remove time restraints to training (which is great to train) it is vastly easier, yet i can get high score in either? Doesnt make sense.

Updated Review Great app and great developer, quick turnaround when something isn't working properly. Thanks so much! Old Review Everything seems to work well except for the training mode, which after the countdown locks up for me and nothing happens (can't even quit). I did the lessons and practices but the challenge is too much for me to jump to from there, I need more practice first and was hoping to use the training mode for that.

This is a good app for learning the fretboard. The update made it much better. Enough that I purchased the premium. My one gripe is that in training setup it should allow you to select the individual notes you want to be quizzed on. That way you could focus on where you're having trouble and not waste time on what you already know. Fix that and I'll give it 5 stars.

really love this app! I've been meaning to learn the fretboard (after playing for 20 odd years) and this app is the best looking and most rewarding way to do it! Comparing yourself against others on the leader board is fun and a great motivation to keep trying for a better score! Also, choosing what part of the fretboard and what strings you want to learn are really helpful. Altogether a great app! Try it, and buy the Pro features, they're worth it!

I rarely rate apps, but I rate this one as one of the best I've ever come across. I originally downloaded this for my kids to practice, but I find myself using it as well, we are all using keeptrack to follow our progress too. The timed aspect is brilliant and I find even myself getting faster very quickly, responses becoming reflexive which is exactly what you want. One suggestion I'd make for a fun additional mode, would be to sight read off a staff. to help with reading too. great job!

Not usable for left handers. After playing with this for a free minutes, I thought it would be a perfect way to learn more theory while practicing where the notes are. But after a few more minutes, I uninstalled it... I looked everywhere for an option to switch to a left handed guitar, but couldn't find one. Then I tried mentally flipping the image, but it was just too much to learn that and also learn what it's trying to teach. This is a right handed app only.

Very smooth operation and I recommend buying the full version, you'll learn a lot and it's very addictive! I only wish the scales tab would account for what tuning you like to play in and not just standard, let it show you the scales to your preferred tuning. Please update!

Well l just got a little over a year under my belt with the guitar. Takes a lot of patience and tenacity. Some days I want to quit, but after practicing a little with this app I'm back strong. Reminded of how far I've come on note identification and fretboard knowledge. I'm back! I'll give it the final star once I try the pro-version and I'll see from there

Brilliant for learning the individual notes. the paid version is actually just what is needed as the free challenge section can leave you reliant on the few set note positions you know and the paid one can force you to focus on certain strings or fret groups. I learnt the entire e string in less than a few hours and moving forward swiftly :D - also when you don't have your guitar on you you can still practice ie on the commute

Best fretboard trainer app. Expands the board gradually so notes come naturally without thinking as you learn further down the board. Locate/identify/mix lets you work in one mode of thinking or switch back and forth. Scores let me see progress. Couldn't ask for more, and it's free.

I like the app and it's great tool for learning the fretboard w/o a guitar handy. Issues: It would be nice to have more theory lessons but perhaps the main aim of the app is to solely teach note finding methods. The low A# and high A notation are incorrect when in training mode. Low A# appears to ask for a B# and high A has no line so it looks like a G. Otherwise great app!

its okay... first i have used, so can't compare. i think the timer is annoying, speed is important, but it keeps changing speeds... wish i could just turn it off and work on finding the notes and their relationships on the fret board instead of battling a silly timer.

This is a very simple yet useful application to get you to know the notes on your guitar's fretboard in an efficient and competitive way. The response time frequency feature is well worth it. Thanks for providing such a useful application!

Makes climbing a steep learning curve that bit more manageable, and fun. Very customisable so you can target the areas you're weakest at, with useful performance feedback to help you identify those areas. Well worth the money.

Lessons work fine, but keyboard trainer opens and hangs after countdown (no questions are asked, no response when fretboard tapped). Also can't back out of trainer once launched (and hung). Disappointed, especially since I followed a blog recommendation to get this app. Makes one wonder about that recommendation. Will be asking for a refund... if I can figure out how to do that....

I've been consistently getting better scores, so the app is helping me learn the fretboard. I wish there was options to stay on one fret instead of it consistently opening them up over time but eventually I suppose it won't matter, I'll know the notes anyway.

Hi! I bought the unlocked version but It has a few problems: When you are in training mode, If you select "random questions" there's a few notes that don't show. E.g.: I select 3 first frets only, training mode don't show 6 string notes 2 or 3 fret only the 1.. That bug repeat with strings 3 and 4...

Kar. V. Apr 15, 2020

Very good app. For 3.50€ it's very worthy investment for learning the fretboard in a fun way! Edit: In the scales tab you have melodic minor twice for every minor, but one of them is just a minor. Please take a look!

Xtk. R. Jul 29, 2021

Really good for practicing notes memorising and challenging yourself to think fast in where to find your notes. However you need to still hold your guitar and just practice theory in general to see your results. Super nice app. I'm gonna enjoy my next few months with it

Moh. S. K. Dec 14, 2020

Installed it. One hour later, I upgraded to Pro. Request to developer: Wish app repeats the note sound when I make correct answer instead playing the current chime sound. This way I will train my ears to grasp the frequency of the note (making this app teach note position AND ear trainer) . The current success chime conflicts with the actual note I am targeting making my ear. Another wish is to keep repeating the note sound until I answer. For same ear training purpose.

This is almost great, but you should double check the notes in your training mode. On the clef it shows what appears to be a flat F which doesn't exist but it means G flat. Then you have what shows a G flat as an A flat. So they've made updates but still insist in keeping some of the errors in training mode. For anyone looking to download, have fun mixing up your A flats for B flats in the treble cleft training mode.

Great guitar app. Never been a big theory nut but this little app makes it fun and interesting with wee tests and quizzes. Also has leaderboards to see how your doing compared with other users. Only just started using this app an hour before writing this review but so far its brilliant. To unlock the pro version it cost £3.19 which isn't much for what you get. I cannot recommend it enough 👍🤘

As a beginner, this app has immensely improved my knowledge and intuitive feel for where all the notes are on a guitar fretboard in just a few days. Very helpful.

Wes. H. Dec 14, 2020

Great app it really does help you to learn the different notes on the fretboard in a fun way so that you have a bit of fun while you are learning about where all the notes are, I really enjoy using this app because it has been helpful for me learning to play the guitar by myself

Cis. M. Feb 17, 2022

Awesome app for anyone willing to push their knowledge and training about the fretboard to another level. I especially like the challenge mode that tests your timing and accuracy naming specific notes.
