Functional Ear Trainer

Have you (or one of your friends) ever wanted to learn to transcribe or play music by ear?
It is so important for a musician to know what you are hearing. A good musical ear helps when you are composing, improvising, transcribing melodies, or playing with others.

Most likely you have already tried different programs to learn to recognize intervals or even to acquire perfect pitch. However, although such programs develop your ear, but can you actually play any melody you hear as soon as you listen to it?

Imagine you could understand music... It is like when somebody is talking to you, you not only hear pleasant sounds, but you recognize words and their meaning.

One day I came across Alain Benbassat's program called "Functional Ear Trainer" and have been using it ever since. It is based on Alain's method to learn to recognize tones.

The main difference between the Functional Ear Trainer and other methods is that it teaches you to distinguish between tones in the context of a particular musical key. You begin to recognize the role (or function) of each tone in this key, which is incredibly similar to its role in other keys of the same scale.

And it is *guaranteed
* anyone can gradually develop this skill. It does not matter: – who you are – an absolute beginner in music or a virtuoso professional musician; – how old you are – a 3 yo kid or a 90+ adult; – what musical instrument you play (you don't even have to play one).

The only requirement is to practice for 10 minutes a day.

I was so excited about this ear trainer that I have developed an Android app based on the Alain Benbassat method. I hope you will find it useful.

I'm not a musician and I thought recognizing musical notes was something for gifted mutants until I tried this app. I'm still pinching myself like "holy cow, is this really happening??" I'm getting good at it pretty fast, and it's so fun and *easy*! I'm starting to think that picking up an instrument might actually be doable after this. Super grateful to the app author and the method author for the learning _and_ confidence boost their work has given me. Thank you so much!

The app is well-designed and fun to use. More importantly, it works much better than anything else I have tried. Learning isolated intervals has been futile for me: months of daily effort but no progress. Instead, this app teaches you to recognize scale degrees in the context of the key. I've made a lot of progress in just a few days. Many thanks to the developers for this great app.

I've only had it for 45m, but it's probably one of the best free apps I've ever installed. No ads, free features are terrific to start, and paid features are reasonably priced. It's remarkable how quickly you can improve at the functional method! I thought it was missing harmonic intervals, but these are available in the "advanced" mode of "basic training". However, there's no user input or stats. Seems feasible to add, given the UI for melodic dictation (or, enter-your-own-score after each ?)

This method definitely works! Stats let me see my progress and what I need to work on. Quite adaptable, many controls. Price for full version is reasonable and worth it. I rarely buy apps but will purchase this once I get >90% on all the free levels. You may get frustrated if like me you have hearing loss in some ranges - highest piano notes are difficult to distinguish; that may be resolved when I buy the multiple instruments pkg. The app is tidy, uncluttered - no BS.

Hi I'm no musician but this app has really helped me hear music. I've used this app on and off for a very long time. Highly recommended no annoying adds and stuff, some things are premier but only when you're ready. The display and ease of use can't be faulted, a great tool for anyone looking to improve their ability to decern sounds.

Great way to train your ear, over a rather basic principle of hearing tonal centers. Very clever!! I'm an intermediate musician and want to start composing on paper and, even if you don't have any previous notion of music theory or music notation on staff, it really does not matter; this app will feed you the basics and get you started right away. Can't recommended it enough!

The exercises are pretty good, but there are a few things that should be added: 1) There should be an option to customize the resolution played after hitting a note so that we can make customer scale lessons. 2) There should be an option for chords especially being able to make custom chord hearing exercises where you name the notes in the chord.

I could always reproduce a song through trial and error on my instruments but I wanted to be able to give actual names to what I hear and speed up that process, be able to write down songs I come up with in my head etc. This app made it so simple and accessible I can't believe I was having such a hard time before. Thanks a lot! I truly recommend this app for everyone who's been confused about how to get started with music or ear training. It explains all the terms you need to know on the subject

Finally an effective and well designed ear training app. I wish I found this sooner! edit: After using this app for a few weeks, yes it's still the best ear training app I've used by far, but it suffers from a common issue with melodic dictation software which is that the melodies it plays are extremely unmusical. Im skeptical once mastering all these exercises that it will translate into being able to dictate from melodies with actual rhythm and voice leading. But we'll see!

User since 2018. I recommend Meludia for beginners for its drone tone and many progressive lessons (minus a buggy interface). I recommend this app for more advanced students. It is highly customizable and great for doing dictation on or off the instrument. With more progressive dictation lessons covering modes of major, melodic minor, diminished, etc scales I would recommend it for everyone.

I've been doing this every day for 10 minutes when I wake up, and I'm amazed at how much I've progressed. I started out having trouble being able to identify any relative pitches, but after about a month of consistent use, I'm able to pretty consistently identify any note (including chromatics) in a major scale. I really like the way the app is structured and all the stats they make available -- it makes it very easy to see your progress, which is helpful particularly when you hit a tough spot.

I just installed it but it looks it has the right excercises to train your ear. I have seen other apps trying to recognize major or minor scales or random chords of the most complex, which is quite impossible to memorize all, failing to train the ear to recognize if it's the IV-V or VI degree of whatever scale.. and without that you don't go anywhere. So quite happy this one does the job!

It's pretty simple and easy to use. The stats are minimal but useful. There is a great deal of customization so you can adapt it to your needs. For instance the C major scale was a bit too high pitched for me to sing along to as I practice, so I chose the lower G major scale and that has been incredibly helpful. There is a lot you can do without paying for it. The paid option seems to come with some quality of life improvements which to me isn't needed. All in all I highly recommend this app.

I've quit doing ear training in the past because of how impossible it seemed to be. But this app made it possible! One week of training and I am now able to identify the note played in a major scale. I'm excited how much I will improve in a month, quarter, year, and more. As for suggestions, 1. Option to use fretboard instead of just piano 2. Specify a name for my custom level

I've been using this on and off for a while now at I've noticed a marked improvement in my ability to recognise the intervals and notes. Coming from an Indian classical background, ear training isn't ever taught or explained so this is really clear. Perhaps a niche request but it would be great if you could switch to Indian classical notation (sargam) for people like me.

It has everything, if there was an option for descending intervals I'd be super impressed. I know there's inversions of intervals, like 4th descending is a 5th... but with the tonal center revolving around the root its very specific to the diatonic scale via key.

I like this app. It trains your ear in a more useful natural setting. Instead notes out of the blue with nothing to compare and contrast. I think the app will help when you play with others.

Ale. Z. May 8, 2022

This application is amazing. Happy to have found it, you can make your own custom levels in the free versions. I gradually started from C E G expanding to C D E F G and later whole octaves and adding semitones.

Dus. L. May 9, 2022

By far the best of all the ear trainers I've tried. The word "functional" in the name expresses why: you are learning to recognize tones in a musical context, and changing key centers rapidly. The interface is clear and simple. The others I looked at can be useful too, but this is the one to master first.

I like this app a lot! I may be obsessed but I can definitely relate with the training method. I complement it with song examples for each interval.

Fantastic app. Easy, intuitive and it really works. I thought I didn't have good ears but this app has helped me develop previously undiscovered ability.

I've been using this for a few months now and I can't praise it highly enough. It's way better than the other few ear training apps I have tried. As a fairly tone deaf guitar player I am amazed at the progress I have made so far, it starts at the complete basics and leads you through in steady increments and you can get a long way without ads or extra purchases. I can now hit a random note on a piano and know what it is, something I couldn't get anywhere near before I started.

Good drills to train your ears. The added buy musical dictations is key. I really wish the font was bigger on the dictation. I can barely see if the ? has turned red or has been replaced by the number when I get it correct. Sometimes my tap is not registered by my phone and I can't see clearly so I go on to the next number which then gives me an error even though I knew the correct answer. I end up with an eyestrain headache

I've noticed an improvement since I started using this app, one month ago. I'm still on the Cmajor scale, but now it's been easier to identify the notes. It is fun to play with and the learning pace is fast.

Mik. M. Apr 26, 2022

By far the best app AND approach. Interval training stinks! This approach is scale degrees in relationship to the TONIC. Such a better approach! Music educator with 15+years experience.

Super intuitive and easy to follow. Really helps you get a sense of where every note lies in relation to "do"
