G4A: Spite & Malice

Spite & Malice is a competitive patience game for two players. Each player starts with a hand containing 5 cards, a pay-off pile containing 20 cards and 4 empty side stacks. In the middle of the table there are 3 empty center stacks and the stock pile containing the remainder of the cards.
The object of the game is to be the first to empty your pay-off pile.

The centre stacks are build up from the ace upwards, independent of suit. So the first card can be the ace of diamondsfollowed by the two of spades, the three of hearts, etc. Kings are wild. This means that you can play kingon any centre stack and it will turn into a card that fits on the card already on the stack. For instanceif you play the king of spades on a ten of clubs the king will turn into a queen.

When a centre stack is completed (by playing a queen or king on a jack) the stack is shuffled into the stock pile.

You can place any card on the side stacks, independent of which cards are already there. Only the top card of each sidestack is accessible though, see below.

At the start of your turn you receive cards from the stock pile to bring your hand back up to a total of 5 cards. In your turn you can play a number of possible moves:
- Play the top card from your pay-off pile onto one of the center stacks.
- Play the top card from one of your side stacks onto one of the center stacks.
- Play a card from your hand onto one of the center stacks.
- Play a card from your hand onto one of your side stacks. This ends your turn.

The game ends when one player plays his/her last card from the pay-off pile onto one of the centre stacks. This player wins the game and receives the number of cards on the other players pay-off pile as points.

The game also ends when the stock is depleted. When this happens the game ends in a tie and neither player scores any points.

The first player to reach 50 points wins the match!

I've been playing this game for a few years now. It was PERFECT for the first years, but something has changed in the algorithm(s) that makes the game so frustrating that I am uninstalling it for the 2nd time (hence 3 stars not 5). Whatever guides the dealing more often than not results in a HEAVY load of Jacks or fives or nines, but you're lucky if you receive more than one three or seven or eight during the match. Real-life card playing is NOT this lopsided. What changed?

This is the closest interpretation that I have found to the version that my parents used to play. It just needs the ability to add cards to the opponent's stack plus the must play aces if possible option. Screen layout can obscure pips on some cards. I also agree that there can be times when it seems that there are more than 8 of the same number in play.

This would be a great game if the random card generator was better. It seems like it continously gives the same cards to the players, and you end up with piles of the same cards. To have 7 or 8 of the same cards multiple times is something that may happen here or there when you play the game in RL, but this seems to be standard in this game. I collect piles of queens next to sixes or nines, to give an example. Frustrating. Same for the other player.

Best skip-bo replacement there is. I purchased skip bo years ago, but when it was bought out by Disney, they totally monetized AND took the fun out of it. This is the best version of what skip- bo was based on and it remains true to form without intrusive ads. If you do want it ad free, you can pay a very reasonable amount for that OR EVEN for a helpful analysis of your move history.

Hi friends, like a lot of you here I was taught this game by a relative (Mom), so playing this is sentimental fun. DEVELOPERS: Thank you for this program, it's absolutely the best Spite & Malice available. A lot of us would really appreciate it if you tweaked the code just a little. Please please please! I would pay for a version where Spring... 1. Doesn't waste Kings when it has the natural cards available on the side stacks.. 2. Doesn't automatically play all payoff Kings to its left pile. 3. Avoids blatantly setting me up. 4. Doesn't play cards from its hand and its side stacks before a playable payoff pile card. I have not yet lost a match, and my hand/game streak is currently 40. Obviously Spring isn't going to be HAL or Ava (Ex Machina), but it would be nice to lose with subtle style. Peace.

I redownloaded the game to see if they fixed it. It's even worse than it was before. Every single game I've played, I've ended up with at least 6 of the 8 total for that card. Last game I had all 8 queens, game before that, I had all 8 10s. I had one game where I had 4 4s 5 5s, 6 6s and 7 7s. Meanwhile the cpu had ace through 10 in their discard deck. The only 7 that wasn't in my discard piles, was in their deck, between a 6 and 8.

I enjoy it, with reservations. If i play it on easy, i won most games. I swap it to medium & i lose most games. The step up in standard doesn't mean the computer plays any better, it just means it gets unbelievably good cards. On medium the computer sweeps 1 hand in 3, last hand its pile started with 3 kings. On standard i get hammered most games & i consider i am a good card player.

I have played other Spite and Malice games and I find this one the best out of all of them. It's not perfect by far but better then others. It's a computer so what do you expect. I play this game every day, all day on and off. It can be very challenging especially when the computer hords all the cards because it doesn't have a brain to figure out how to play them right in the discard piles. Try it for yourself you might like it. To the makers of this game, please try to make it better. Ty

I love the game. I use to play with a friend with a deck of cards. I gave this game a 4 rating because it can improve having the opponent not stack up on the kings. And play when it has a play on the stack. It cheats :)

Surely it took a lot of work to create this game, so it's a shame you have to squint to see the cards! Easy fix. Stupid problem

I love playing Spite and Malice and have for many years, long before the app. The -1 star is for the ridiculous app ads and the continual "tie" games. No more stupid app ads and no more tie games, please

I really like this game. Ads are brief at start and easy to dismiss. I would like better explanations of statistics.

I use to play this game with a dear friend of mine but in our rules you could not use a king for a 2 or a 7 you needed the proper cards to continue in the game it made it challenging and fun!

Reminds me of college days. I wish either the layout or the look of the cards were different. Its tough on my eyes

In this version of Spite & Malice, you can hog aces in your side stacks and hand. There is no way to alter this setting.

The generated player appears to improve their playing skills the more you play. Thus creating more of a challenge.

Good implementation of a classic two-player card game. I haven't played this game since I was a kid. I downloaded it for my grandchildren but find that I am enjoying it too!

Great game. Auto rotate doesn't work. Once fixed, I'll give it 5 stars all around.

It is fun, but the hard needs to be harder. there isn't much of a challenge.

Your game is terrific except for the robot. I don't know who programs it to ignore plays!

Mic. F. Jul 9, 2019
