Garmin Smartphone Link

I find it hard to believe how bad this app is. I use GPS since I often drive in areas without phone coverage. Bought Garmin instead of my usual TomTom because it offered free traffic updates. Yes, but over my phone!! If I have coverage I can just as well use Google maps and get a better navigation system for free 🙄 I would still have kept the app for the push notifications, if it wasn't so ungawdly huge that it blocks my phone, and can't be turned off! Seriously?? Was this some student project?

I've been using this app for several months with rarely any problems. Originally, I was only seeing phone numbers of callers but no names. Then I saw that I could allow it to see my list of contact. App hasn't used that much data. Only problem I see is that now I get alerted too often of minor delays. Don't know how to turn that off. I do get alerted of real traffic problems quicker than before I started using the app.

Everytime I have this opened and connected to GPS, it literally locks up my go's for 30 seconds to 2 mins. Hasn't had an update since maybe 2 phones ago. UPDATE YOUR APP!!!!! or don't advertise it as live traffic updates because when it connects, it locks up constantly!!! And because of the lock ups, I rarely use it and can't utilize its best feature the live updates. When people have free alternatives, better make sure yiu have a good and up to date product. 2 and a half years and no update!!!!

It can't handle coordinates but seemingly only addresses, which is ridiculous for a GPS app in a WGS84 world. It does not play well with just about any other geo app. It fails loading useful map detail levels if you give up and use the in-app map. And of course "old" (over a year in Garmin speak) devices can't use their new soft. While this is abandonware.

It works sometimes but is very difficult to connect to head unit. It does not auto connect but seems to think it does. It is not intuitive at all either. It seems like a beta app that the company forgot to finish. The worst part however is I do not trust it while driving.

I am sorry to say but the app is absolute rubbish. Even though I have a compatible device Bluetooth connection absolutely broken which would have been my major use case so that I won't have to climb over my dash to type in an address. The gace that de app looks like it has not had a UI overhaul since 2007 just makes things worse. The only selling point of using a standalone GPS navigation is that is OZ land on a P license peeps are not allowed to use "screen mirroring" lik Android Auto.

Dreadful features. Inputting an address is basically useless. Used to be able to enter an address and have it sent to the GPS, but that was long ago and there hasn't been any improvement in at least compensating for the loss of the Google API. Even entering an entire city name brings back a "No matches found" error message. But at least i can find out what Foursquare thinks about a rest area bathroom!

I like the app... but lately I have noticed that it keeps turning the Wi-Fi on my phone off when it connects to my garmin nuvi, but it doesn't re-enable it after it disconnects and I don't have unlimited data on my phone. I have looked in the settings but I can't find any option to disable that function. this is the only thing that annoys me about it. because I never remember to turn it back on myself.

App runs continuously. It won't shut off, comes on even when you aren't using the device or anywhere near it. Even if you force stop the app, it comes on again trying to connect to the device. Very annoying as it is also a push notification and shows on your status bar. Lots of apps run when not needed, but this one runs and shows you it's running. I've had to delete it.

App was working fine. But I was having a problem with my phone, memory was rapidly running out. I'd delete things, but it would run out again. Checking storage for different apps, I found Smartlink had 9.8 GB of data! No wonder I was in trouble! Can we have an update that isn't so greedy; I can't see why Smartlink needs more than minimal memory!

Seems to work to connect my 2597 to my phone, it has no trouble dialing numbers and making some requests. But, I have two major issues. 1: I use my phone in landscape mode while driving, to display auto gauges and a digital dash. Trying to use this app at 90 degrees is a royal pain. 2: I've gotten warnings and bad weather alerts for areas that aren't within 100 miles of where I am or where I'm headed. The weather info is pretty useless.

A year down the line and this app still irritates me. All I want it to do is send traffic updates to my GPS. I see absolutely no need for it to do anything else yet it tries to bluetooth to everything and breaks the connection between my phone and the head unit in my car. Sort it out Google. You don't have to over functionalise every app to access everything on somebody's phone.

mediocre at best. it makes finding an address outside 50 miles a real pain. the lack of finding an address really takes away the usefulness of this app. but, when you have the address nearby, it works great. i.d like to see the "search nearby" in the UI and functionality changed to "Search address(es)". this way it makes "SmartLink" more functional. my rating will change when this feature is changed.

Good for Bluetooth integration with phone, including text messages. Weather also nice. Traffic reports have not been helpful. Notified of conditions that are too far away and never materialize. Disappointed that LiveTrack doesn't work due to "Consent" issue. Contacted Garmin support twice and neither rep was familiar with the issue, however, previous app reviews note the problem months ago.

The theory as to how it works is fine, and in conjunction with a Garmin car sat nav it seems to work. However, even when it is turned off and no longer near the sat nav, it re-starts of its own accord and interferes with other Bluetooth devices that I am trying to use. If Garmin were to sort this out, then it would be worth a higher star level. This same problem was evident within the app over a year ago, and still it persists.

This blasted app is trying to connect to every Bluetooth signal I get around. My Garmin is OFF, OFF, OFF and it still tries to connect to it. it also tries to connect to my Bluetooth earbuds, my cars Bluetooth, my desktop and everything. They must of made a change to the app, I didn't have this issue with my S7 Edge. I can't turn off my Bluetooth on my phone, then my smartwatch won't work. I do like the traffic feature, though. It saved me an hour on a trip I made by bypassing the traffic.

For the second time in five months, my phone alerted me that my storage space was running out. After poking around the file system and not finding anything unexpected, I checked the apps list in Settings and, sure enough, this app had 20+GB of "user data" stored somewhere I can't see it without root access. EDIT a month later, I'm uninstalling this after my phone ran out of space for a third time. This is completely ridiculous. *What is it storing??*

I've been using this with no problems for a few years, and now suddenly I'm unable to turn the app off without force stopping it. Previously it stopped when I turned Bluetooth off. It now also wants permission to access my Google play account address, which I don't have a problem with, but I'm unable to select 'yes', hence it remains active, and I'm unable to access anything other than that screen. Frustrating. Update. I've uninstalled the app, and now it appears to be working. For now.

Works well as far as it's been used with the Dezl 780 primarily for traffic. Wish it could auto connect with any registered phone in range instead of having to manually change phone connections; auto reconnection to same paired phone is seamless. Traffic reports are generally accurate & quick to update, but will occasionally misread lane closures/construction as a full road closure & try to route around which is unnecessary. Considering the cost of these units, I think "advanced weather" functionality should be free like it is on Rand McNally devices; basic weather reports accurately anyhow. Most irritating is the constant "access permission" request notification on every device connection event & multiple times thereafter if you don't connect. I don't pair my phone through unit so have no need to connect to phone contacts.

Positive: Traffic updates and re-routing options. Negative: Can't be turned off when not needed. It apparently does not stop when Force Stop from the app's properties is selected. The only option to kill it seems to be to uninstall it and only install when needed. Edit: My rating decreased because I have found out that this app drains my battery to 0% even when my phone is plugged in to a 12V vehicle charger. I had it running so we could get there traffic information.

I use it on my Navigator V on my motorcycle, side by side with Google maps. As a supplement. For 7 years. It works fine. I have had no issues. I enjoy using it. Some places dont have a cellular signal. It does seem to use a lot of storage space. I have had no battery issues with it, but I connect to power when using gps.

One huge problem: memory usage - 12 GB of storage used!!! No reason for that as I rarely use the app and have traveled only locally with it. No way to see what the space is used for nor can it be controlled. Other features seemed to work okay though in my part of the world there aren't many traffic alerts to be found. I may reinstall this app if I use it for travel. Otherwise: DELETE until needed. (Used with a Garmin RV 760.)

The last update on March 20, 2019 made the app unusable. The update included better Bluetooth stability. It got worse. My Garmin drive assist 51lmt freezes up when connected to this app. When the Garmin is not frozen, it restarts itself without warning. It runs smooth when I turn Bluetooth off. It runs smooth when my phone is off or Bluetooth is off on my phone. This app also kills my battery. I had to uninstall this even though I need the traffic for work. PLEASE FIX THIS APP!!!!!!

Uninstalled from my S9. I thought it would be convenient but it is not compliant. It just sits there trying to connect and can not be stopped. I tried to Force-Stop the app and it refuses to close, even with Bluetooth turned off on the phone. I should be able to stop it when I want to. The occasional use of the traffic part of the app isn't worth having to charge the phone more often.

I really find it frustrating that you can't turn off the notifications from selected apps. I have tried over and over again to deselect the apps I Don't want to receive notifications from but when I hit back and then come back to the app list, they're somehow automatically secected again!!!! The little bin icon let's you turn off ALL notifications though. Can this please be fixed or selection saving be implemented?
