GENKI Vocab Cards

Learn elementary Japanese words at your own pace:GENKI Vocab Cards is a digital vocabulary card app that enables users to learn approximately 1,200 words essential for beginners along with the native pronunciations at their own pace!
This is the official app from GENKI: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, a best-selling series of Japanese learning materials boasting more than 1.2 million copies sold.

Advantages◆Users can view the cards and listen to the recordings as they like, enabling them to study at their own pace.◆By repeating a process of memorization and self-checking, learners can firmly master important beginning-level vocabulary.◆Words already memorized are progressively removed from the card deck, so users can concentrate on just the words that challenge them, making for a more efficient approach to learning.

Study methods and functions◇ “My Deck” allows users to view the cards over and over, so they can take their time learning.・The words can be studied by working from English to Japanese, or vice-versa.・Learners can listen to natural pronunciations by native speakers of Japanese.・Fun illustrations help users to better retain the words studied. ・Each card also includes an example sentence with an English translation and a recording of its pronunciation.

◇ “Check” helps learners to track their mastery.・Users check their understanding of the vocabulary studied and sort the words into those mastered and those not yet retained.・Retention can be checked by going from English to Japanese, or vice-versa.・The cards of words already mastered are taken out of the set, leaving behind just those that still need to be worked on.

◇ “List” displays a list of all words covered by the app so that users can see their progress and review the vocabulary.・Checkmarks are automatically placed next to words that have been mastered.・The word cards can be displayed from the list entries, enabling quick review.・The list can be arranged in any of three orderings: lesson order, a-i-u-e-o order, and alphabetical order.

○This app is based on the vocabulary from the second edition of GENKI.○It functions the same as the iPhone version of GENKI Vocab Cards.○Ads: The app does not display any ads that might interfere with learning.○Two more apps, GENKI Kanji Cards and GENKI Conjugation Cards, are to be released.

Read some of the negative reviews... I think the app has been updated. I find it easy to use and worth it. Can quiz in either direction...just shows the English, or just shows the Japanese. Also includes sentence for context. Plus, it reads it alowed if you wish. Excellent aid to learning vocabulary, which I have a hard time with.

This app is awesome! Before this i was using anki but i couldn't find a suitable deck that had audio. Even when i found 1 there were problems with that deck. This app worked perfectly with audio. Also, they included sentences with the vocab so you can understand better. There's images too. It's a bit different from anki but you will learn to use it pretty quickly. It's overpriced tho.

Easy 5 stars.... I was initially put off by the humble simple not so standardized look of the app. Especially compared to other flash card apps. App is meant to integrate with the text book, however it is valuable on its own. What you get: Normally used Kanji has hiragana superscripts. Audio examples of word on front of card and audio examples of simple sentences on the back of card. The audio is spoken at a reasonable speed. Good simple kanji/hiragana/katakana sentence examples on the back of the card, where the rest of the sentence is at the learning level of the card. You can review the cards as Japanese or English. You can shuffle cards You can temporarily remove cards that you already know. You can pick multiple lesson card sets. An English<>Japanese dictionary where all of the entries are from the cards. Cards are grouped by the learning level of the text book. What could be better: If your screen is set to full zoom, the show answer button covers the hiragana. Dictionary when viewed as English is alphabetized only by the first letter of the word, so you have to look for the word.

Great for short daily vocab practice (which has been proven to be the best way to learn). The other reviewers seem to take this for granted. There is a shuffle mode if you actually take the time to look at the settings. This is much more convenient than real flashcards or using Quizlet which has too many errors. I trust the book and app since my Japanese teacher reccommended it. She helps me put together sentences with correct grammar structure. Arigatou gozaimasu Genki Vocab Cards!

Pros: Get all vocabulary in one place with audio and flash cards Cons: The UI is a little bulky and dated At 6 dollars, is quite expensive for a simple flashcard app Ultimately, I would still buy it simply because of the convenience. However, it truly is overpriced.

Not a great application for review, they aren't actual flash cards, just the word written on it and asks if you remember it or not. Would prefer an application that would provide multiple choice, or have you write the answer if you got it right. Not worth the money when free applications have a better structure to learning and practice.

It's a bit sad that it's "just flashcards" based on the book with no real benefit over physical flashcards except for always being able to access them on the phone. Furthermore, the app is not exactly pretty and not designed well. Maybe the developers should look at other learning apps like Memrise, Duolingo or Drops, just to give them an idea of the possibilities a smartphome provides to assist you with learning vocabulary.

Easy to use flash cards, but could be better. Main problem is that the flash cards don't stay up long enough to review them. They should stay open for as long as you hold your finger on the screen. Some of the hiragana words are long and take me a little bit to read and/or remember. Other than that, it's a good app that makes it easier to study.

Its literally just a premade list of words broken out by lesson. Theres not even an option to shuffle your "deck" of selected words. There are two modes, review the list in the preset order, or take a quiz where you answer correctly once and the word is removed from your list unless you go in the options and manually readd it to the list. it needs serious improvement to be worthwhile.

I'm glad I ignored the bad reviews. This companion app is fantastic if you have the books. A few reviews just don't know how to use the app. You can shuffle, you can get the English translation. Yes it is a bit overpriced, but honestly genki is the best way to learn Japanese and worth the money. This app makes that process a dream. It's clear, simple and lines up with the books perfectly. It has English first or Japanese first, a practice and a test mode and a restore so you can test and learn.

Great app to review the vocab from the excellent coursebooks. The cards are organised by lesson and you can test yourself from English to Japanese or vice versa. There are nice pictures on the cards, example sentences and audio. A very nice, useful app that deserves a much better review score!

Unfortunately it is just a word list, with yes/no/unsure buttons to let the user self assess their own ability. It has not helped me at all, I would like a refund. I was hoping for a quiz feature that would help me learn.

Daa. C. Apr 11, 2020

Very, very basic functionality. This app is only good if you're too lazy to write the vocab on flash cards yourself. Not that it's bad, it does what it says, but I think it could do a lot better for something that charges people for access.

Eri. S. Mar 21, 2020

Definitely useful when paired with the book. Both this app and the conjugation app. The Kanji one is not very useful as you will want to actually be drawing them on paper repeatedly.

Bra. K. Nov 22, 2018

I was excited to have this app as additional practice to go along with the workbook, but unfortunately, for the price, this app is absolutely garbage. It is very poorly designed and looks as if it were designed in fifteen minutes. I would have happily paid $0 for this app though.

Awesome app to work with the book. Worth to buy. First steps a little bit confusing (interface isn't intuitive), better to see tutorials first. But totally recommended.

Blu. Aug 6, 2020

App does not implement SRS or spaced repetition system that is proven to assist in transferring short term memory to long term due to an increasing and decreasing space of time between vocabulary words. Once that is changed to use SRS it would be an actually useful app specifically for the price of $6

Tav. H. Dec 5, 2019

The app and content are excellent, but I wish that it had spaced-repetition. The fact that it doesn't means that I will just keep using Anki instead.

Oma. Aug 24, 2020

I cannot use the app at all. When I opened up the app, there is a notice with some words stating that the app isn't a Google download and the service ran out. In other words, the app is useless. Unbelievable!

Tim. F. Jan 18, 2021

Pretty good but not all the vocab, would have been better if they had the "additional vocabulary" from the book in here as well but this is exactly what it said it is, flash cards

T. R. Feb 2, 2022

It could be better, is not what I expected. I'm taking a Japanese class in college and my book showed this app just to study and practice. I don't find it helpful at all, I wasted my money on this for nothing.

Eva. P. Sep 10, 2019

Worthless app. Just a list of vocab words without English definitions. There isn't even a clear mapping to the textbook. I recommend using any other flash card app.

Rob. S. Oct 10, 2018

Very helpful flash card studying on the go. A fair price. I could see myself spending the same amount of money on a deck of flashcards to write them myself

A. G. u. Jan 8, 2019

Thisca complex and quite rigidly designed app aimed at students using the Genki textbook. I am using the book but as pensioner tourist the vocab offered is often irelevant.

Chr. L. Jul 18, 2019

Serviceable. Does NOT have all the vocab from the newest edition of Genki despite being advertised on the damn book. Disappointed.

Ken. H. Jan 12, 2020

Doesnt contain all of the words in chapter 1, agree that it's not conducive to learning as there is no mixing option. Buyer beware no refunds on this app.

K. G. Sep 27, 2018

Overglorified for the price. The IOS version is superior in every way which isn't fair because we're paying the same price. Please make this app cool like the ios version so we get what we paid for.

Aly. D. Aug 9, 2019

The apps don't work on my phone and I'm having difficulty getting a refund. I'm very upset with Google Play and the app developer.

Mat. C. Feb 3, 2020

It isn't designed well for mobile ironically, with many things overlapping. A shame really.
