Learning the gender of nouns is the biggest hurdle in learning German grammar. All too often we learn the noun but forget to learn the gender at the same time and without knowing the gender of a noun one cannot speak or write correctly using the nominative, accusative, dative or genitive.
I developed this tool as a practice and learning aid for remembering the gender of a noun and it is also useful for remembering when to use the nominative, accusative, dative or genitive.
You can paste your own German text into the text area and then test the definite or indefinite article or, probably much more useful, you can let the app select some text for you from the latest news. You can select from the following topics: News, Finance, Sport, Politics, German Politics and Foreign Politics. You can also decide on how long you want the text you are to be tested on to be, there are five lengths of text available.
Once you have selected your topic and length of text you click on Definite or Indefinite according to whether you want to be tested on the definite article (die, der, das etc,) or the indefinite article (ein, eine, etc.).
The screen is then replaced by your text with all of the articles replaced by selection boxes for you to select the correct article. When you click on "Get Score" the correct article will be highlighted in green and incorrect ones in red.

Simple App that simply does what it describes. As it uses real world text, you cannot practice your german in a more hands on fashion. Five stars for this! I have tried many other apps, but I have not found any other app that does more than gernder learning... Especially not with recent news articles! The only minus point I can think of is that it is impossible to practice dich, dir, euer, ihrer, and so on. Maybe this can be added in another (paid?) version.
