Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy

A game I made
For a certain kind of person

To hurt them.

Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is a punishing climbing game, a homage to Jazzuo's 2002 B-Game classic 'Sexy Hiking'. You move the hammer with the mouse, and that's all there is. With practice, you'll be able to jump, swing, climb and fly. Great mysteries and a wonderful reward await the master hikers who reach the top of the mountain.

To quote Jazzuo himself: "The hiking action is very similar to way you would do it in real life, remember that and you will do well".

• Climb up an enormous mountain with nothing but a hammer and a pot.
• Listen as I make philosophical observations about the problem at hand.
• Between 2 and ∞ hours of agonizing gameplay, depending. The median time to finish for my playtesters was 5 hours, but the mean was closer to ∞.
• Lose all your progress, over and over.
• Feel new types of frustration you didn't know you were capable of.

I can't claim to have beaten this game in a time that anyone would be amazed or proud of, but at the end I got over it, and it taught me alot about myself. The challenge of climbing a moutain while learning how to climb and the rules of exsisting, while being pushed down at every chance the universe recives is something I can't explain in levels of frustration, but the level of achievment I feel for getting over it, is nothing short of... well, you'll have to see for yourself.

Took me a total of 4hrs and 37min off and on to win. Times it got frustrating but still left this determination to drive past the obstacle and not quit and give up. Commentary relaxing me threw my journey. At first it was complicated but after you get the feel for the hammer and how to use. Those set backs were cake to get back to where u were. Wish though there were more levels or at least a version in game where players could create levels/modded and be able to play those as well. 11/10☆

I missed the arrival of this game on other platforms and only just learned of it. Having no experience playing it with a mouse, I only know the frustration of it using touchscreen controls. Those who bemoan the controls as "poor" have not ventured deep enough into the game to glimpse the truth I have found within: that it is not about you controlling the character, for you cannot. You can only control which instincts/reactions to train, and that it is the environment which is controlling you.

I think it's a great game, however the graphics have rendered it unplayable for me once I get to a certain point. You know that tree at the top of the second hill? every time I make it there, my frames drop to about 17 fps and my phone stops accepting my input. If there was an option to disable the tree so I could keep going it would be great, or if you have to interact with the tree, reducing it's graphics would be be really sweet.

While I think it's fairly agreeable that this game has some top-notch mouse controls on PC, I was sad, but not really surprised to find that the touch controls felt awkward and out of place. I also found that even on the lowest settings, (and on a decently powerful phone) the performance wasn't very smooth. Aside from those two things, I'd say this is a pretty decent mobile port of an over-all phenomenal game.

I got this figuring it might be a new challenge after I've been speedrunning it on PC. It was good, finished it 3 times, but now it's just broken. Whenever I start playing just about as soon as I start moving the hammer it starts swinging left extremely fast, even when I'm not touching the screen. It's impossible to even get past the tutorial section before it breaks. When it breaks it's impossible to regain control.

The game itself is great. The controls are not. At least place a joystick somewhere for this to feel like an interesting game to play. This actually works if you just use one side of the screen and pretend theres a circle there. Note: This is 10× harder than the PC version. Don't get this if you're trying to win with controls that aren't even following your finger. The hammer will have a mind of its own...

The game in itself is actually quite fun and helps the time pass with critical thinking about how, where, and when you should move. Being honest, if you start and end off with a slow pace and don'et small things bother you, you can finish the first section in less than five minutes which is what I think the game is trying to encapsulate alongside w/ the poor controls. Though that still doesn't excuse them. Especially the fact that the game purposefully turns down the sensitivity.

Works Surprisingly Well. I just started playing on PC yesterday. I saw there was an Android port *and* it was on sale, so I *immediately* bought it. The controls are actually surprisingly good, and I can play almost as easily on my phone with my finger as I can on my PC with a mouse. Hint: the whole screen works like a trackpad, with relative motion from wherever you initially place your finger. Be gentle. Be subtle. Take your time. You'll be hammering your way up that mountain like a pro soon!

Its fun and stands up to the PC version. Of course the PC versions controls are 100x better. They still wont add controller support. Some people dont have a problem with using the touch screen controls but alot of us do so you need to add controller support. Just add it! Your score will increase dramatically on the play store. Update: Will you please add controller support?! just add bluetooth controller support so we can use a controller or mouse. This should have been done long ago.

When I saw this game had a mobile counterpart, I was worried that it wouldn't control as well as the Steam version. It took a bit of getting used to, but it actually works just as well, and in some sense, better than the PC counterpart. The graphics do take a hit, as does performance (even on an S9) but overall the experience is still great! Love this game, falls and all!

Dang, this game has been quite the journey. Gave up the first time I tried it and I picked it up again around 3 weeks ago. Was determined to finish it this time and I finally managed to. I love this game's design and aesthetic, and I love how such simple controls can create such dynamic situations and gameplay. Also, despite what I've seen elsewhere, I actually found the commentary to be a great addition. The controls are a bit wonky sometimes, but overall would totally recommend getting it!

This game could be awesome, if you had another damn joystick. I'm sick of getting into an area I'd easily be able to do on a computer only for the whack controls to totally mess everything up. The controls switch from regular to inverted halfway through making a move and it makes this game damn near impossible. Do not spend money on this app, it's not worth $8 at all. Get on your computer and play it there. Total bs.

Its designed to be a challenge, so ignore anyone rating low due to difficulty. Its a lot of fun, responsive, and no bugs on my s9+. Worth a shot if you like hard games but be warned, there are no checkpoints and if you fall you will have to restart. And its a very long fall.

Fantastic game. The game is pretty clear from the outset about what to expect and I still enjoyed it immensely. Like others, I didn't find this any more or less difficult on phone vs PC. I know this because I started on mobile, then bought the steam version thinking it would help. It did not. It was also a little buggy at times (on Pixel 4) but that became part of the fun too. Just stick with it and you'll get there. That's the point, I think.

The controls are fine, not difficult to use, just takes a little simple circle sweep of your finger to get going. Once you know how to move, then thats when you have to use your brain to be able to get past certain bits. Its not as simple as just going forward. It is a difficult game to get by, but my personal opinion, its very well made and i enjoy it.

I understand it's a rage game and that's part of the fun, but god the controls are garbage on mobile. Your hammer behaves as if it has a mind of its own because you have next to no accuracy with your fingers, which cover part of the screen anyways. This game is great on PC, since you have that accuracy with a mouse. However a mobile port just wasn't necessary. You almost need a pen to even get past the first obstacle

Just as frustrating as with mouse. Still have yet to find out what's at the top. 10/10 P.S. if you're expecting the same thing as the PC then you're wrong. If you're used to the mouse then you'll be frustrated by the touch controls but you just have to understand that it's a new challenge, just like switching from keyboard to controller on PC.

Some of the moments when you first play are kinda annoying, but the first time you beat it is so satisfying. The controls are also easy to figure out and you can get better instantly, my first time I beat it was 2 hours, next was 1 hour, then I got a 16 minute run. This game is frustrating but is still fun. Honestly just a good game.

This is a good port of the PC version of the game and looks really good for a mobile game (and it's cheaper too), however coming from the PC version the controls are a little harder to master. You can't swing your hammer around fast enough in some places and you have to take it slow. I did eventually get to the top so it is doable. Maybe you could give us the option to use a mouse to control the game just like the PC version.

There should be more control options like the ability to adjust your camera height. I often have trouble controlling the hammer due to the camera being too high. If there was a camera control joystick, or a certain setting yhat would allow you to adjust the height of your camera, that would be great. TL;DR Since this game is normally controlled by a mouse, camera height is not a big deal, however, with touch screen controls, it can be hard to use because sometimes, the camera is too high.

What happened here??? I had a blast playing a few months ago, controls working perfectly fine and all but now there's this weird glitch that makes it impossible to play!!! it keeps swinging the hammer full circle to the left in high speed making me lose progress and then stops and I'm unable to do anything unless I close the game and launch it again just for the glitch to repeat almost instantly!!!! please fix it!!!!

Evi. I. Apr 22, 2022

Look I know that this game is entirely possible but its ridiculous how much harder it is on mobile than PC because the controls are completely wack. It gets to a point where it's ridiculously hard honestly there should be some sort of advantage to mobile or at least make the controls easier, however the game is still fun and frustrating which makes success way better

The coding going into this must be just an insane amount with the physics, the controls, the graphics, the cutscenes, all of it. I originally heard of this from a YouTuber and thought,"Hmm. Why shouldn't I buy this?" I will never regret it, and thank you so much for creating this game. Also, one last thing before I go, the commentary is amazing; my mom was cracking up laughing when she heard some parts.

game is amazing, one of the best simple games that i can just boot up on my pc at any time and play for fun. the game has been really well ported, the controls feel perfect. only issue is that, unlike the images, the game doesnt run i portrait mode. i think this game would run great in portrait mode, which is one of the main reasons i got it on mobile, but it sadly isnt supported.

Control is difficult using touchscreen, it is hard to get through the rock at the first part when going up. It can get clumsy to move with finger. I guess it would be easier to play with PC. Overall the idea of this game is good by bringing something this weird, making it hype. But people tend to give up if it is this hard. I've watched the speed run in Youtube, it looks simple to complete. I guess most people play game to enjoy but this game bring so much frustated. Gameplay is abit lag too.
