GI means glycemic index. It is a number associated with a particular type of food to indicate the food's effect on a person's blood glucose (blood sugar) level.

The Glycemic Load (GL) of food is a number that estimates how much the food will raise a person's blood glucose level after eating it.

Because GL is related to the food's effect on blood sugar, low-GL meals are often recommended for diabetic control and weight loss.

Did you know that recent studies from the Harvard School of Public Health indicate that the risks of diseases such as type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease are strongly related to the GI of the overall diet. In 1999, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) recommended that people in industrialised countries base their diets on low-GI foods in order to prevent the most common diseases of affluence, such as coronary heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

The Glycemic load appears to be a significant factor in dietary programs targeting metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and weight loss; studies have shown that sustained spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels may lead to increased diabetes risk. The Shanghai Women's Health Study concluded that women whose diets had the highest glycemic index were 21 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than women whose diets had the lowest glycemic index. For diabetics, glycemic load is a highly recommended tool for managing blood sugar.

What is a low carb diet?Low-carbohydrate diets or low-carb diets are dietary programs that restrict carbohydrate consumption, often for the treatment of obesity or diabetes. Low-carbohydrate diets are used to treat or prevent some chronic diseases and conditions, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

A low-GI food releases glucose more slowly and steadily, which leads to more satisfactory blood glucose readings after meals. A high-GI food causes a more rapid rise in blood glucose levels; this is best for energy recovery after exercise or for a person experiencing hypoglycemia.

Had high hopes But alas was let down Looked like this was the app I wanted to go with downloaded to reduce the constant online searching. Double checked the info in the app with a simple search. White Rice. The GL # listed is actually a few points off the GI and without paying a premium I can't tell if the developer just has GI and GL reversed, are just a few points off the Sydney database and therefore reliable enough, Nor can vefify that the numbers for the other stats are reliable enough

Frustrating app. GI info. is limited on most basic foods and I paid for the ad free version. For example, I queried "bell pepper". Not in it's database. Than I queried "blueberries". Not in it's database. Should have just used the free version for my purposes.

Knowing the GI with the GL for food and being able to adjust in the app the 100g to my needs has helped me enjoy any food without compromising my health. I WAS pre-diabetic this app together with my food scale I have been able to bring my glucose levels to normal levels. Yay! Before I was fearful of indulging myself in certain food, like for example, blueberries. Found out that I was eating less than what I could have enjoyed confidently.

This is the only helpful app that I have found thus far for Glycemic Load. It still has Many foods missing and could be improved but it's solid. I paid for the full version and like it.

This has changed a lot over the years. I recall paying for this but I haven't used it much. Now it's all premium focused. The UI is confusing. The functions are confusing (just like they were years ago), the side menu is ugly and shoves registration under your nose. Basic backup is restricted to accounts. Can I just export to my device or cloud service like every other damn app these days? No? Did I overlook something?

Edit: thanks for clarifying. Sorry I confused it with GL which it seems is not available. There's just not enough in the free version to make it useful for me but someone else that needs an app to calculate BMI might like it. I don't need a glucose tracker. I was just interested in investigating my GL. All the extra features should be in the premium version and a basic GL tracker should be free, if that's what the app's primary purpose, since it's called that. The index by iteself is not hugely useful. My rating is for the free version only. It seems premium users are more satisfied. Old review: The table doesn't display the quantity of food its for so it's pretty useless as a reference table. If you're going to make that one table available for free at least let it be useful. It's really all I wanted. Not really interested in pretty charts and a weight tracker right now so deleted it. Sorry.

Very quick and easy app to use. Very handy if you are watching sugar intake (diet, health, both). The free version shows the Glycemic Index of the food item, & it's all colour coded like traffic lights so very quick to scroll or search for the food you want - & see if it's a good choice! For those who want to eat a low-carb lifestyle and also watching the impact of carbs for health reasons, the app now includes the option to make a one time payment to see the Glycemic Load of food. I love it!

The following is my opinion based on my experience. The application is not all that useful as it's just a list of foods with GI. But, you can't really tell if that is similar to the food you eat. I didn't check out the weight tracker and food journal functions because I'm currently using MyFitnessPal for these functions. The ads were so annoying and intrusive that I quickly uninstalled the application.

Just got the update, the clear feature when adding a new reading is good, TY. Something I feel would make it a touch better is for it to be cleared automatically when you click on the add new reading button. That should make it a bit easier for people using a small screen on a phone. The jump to next column when adding a BP reading is Excellent!! 10/10 from me on that one. Also, if the column for adding grams when adding to the meal calculator was clear would be another less step. Thank You.

I've begun using this app to help bring my T2D under control. The various screens are visually stunning and indicate excellent programming skill and attention to detail. It make entering data easy. I ran into some problems initially due to another app, contacted the developer who responded almost immediately and worked with me until it was resolved. A First Class Act if there ever was one! I can't recommend it and the developer strongly enough. Truly deserving of encouragement and support! 👍

I paid for the full version so I can put as many values as I need to in a day. So many many great things about this app! If you test often enough it gives you an accurate a1c prediction. I could choose my own appropriate glucose levels for various testing times and circumstances. The graphing is great. Along with ability to make a note as to why your numbers are what they are. The blood pressure part is useful as is the weight and measurements. I can upload my data or hand my phone to the Dr.

No purchases and free is misleading at best. App advertises GL calculation but you have to buy premium to get that feature. There is a free trial but limited time. Five thumbs down.

Just really started this app and read the tutorial. So far fine. I'm elderly and slow and will update at a later time. No problems.

Love this app! And all of the Premium features. I'm try ing to lose weight and find it a useful tool. Especially leaning about the Glycemic Index & Glycemic Load.

You've got a great app here. I needed an app to show me the GI scale and this happened to be the first one I clicked on and I was stunned at the amount of work and info you put on here. Keep up the good work!

Ode. C. Apr 10, 2020

Used app for 3 months. Pro's- customizeable measurement types; nice variety of reports; and clean/clear design. Con's-inability to edit entry once entered; "mood" option-better replaced by simple good/poor for sleep, exercise & stress. Lastly, I do ingredients & meal tests and its effect on my glucose reading. Feel this is key to my health. Currently capture such tests under Notes but can't open to see/compile/find patterns, so have to go by memory. Can you design something (pretty please?!).

I desided to get a subscription and got a free trial. After I closed the program and opened it again, I got a message that my premium trial is expired and I can't use premium features. So my premium was only about one hour long. That's ridiculous. I have a paid subscription and don't have all program tools.

Average. It contains a very long list of foods to calculate your carbohydrates. Unfortunately, It does not provide accurate calculation, I have unbalanced my diabetes using the net carbohydrates from the app. I've made a calculation by hand based on the amount of carbohydrates for each food and don't match.... This app is totally informative and cannot be used to administrate the right insuline dosage. To make it work you have to correct each food based on the nutritional label from each item.

This app is great! So helpful deciding what to eat. As a diabetic it is important to know the glycemic load of foods so having this resource at my fingertips is game changing. The only reason I did not give 5 stars was due to the units of measure. It would be nice if there were more options than ounces or grams. Cups, for example would be helpful.

Great so far! Am newly diagnosed, trying to manage w/o meds, this app is VERY useful & helpful to get my A1c down.

Jay. L. Feb 2, 2019

I'm diabetic, downloaded app to search what I ate yesterday. could not find half of what I ate on list. pay to unlock features but doesn't say how much only 1.99 to remove adds which are more annoying than most. I don't mind paying when it comes to diabetes, not for this. Need to update menu items like my fitness pal. This app reminds me of Pac-Man, very very basic!
