GnuCash

GnuCash is a mobile finance expense tracker application for Android.
It is a companion application for GnuCash for the desktop and enables flexible tracking of expenses on-the-go which can be exported to QIF or GnuCash XML formats.

Some of feature highlights include:

• An easy-to-use interface.

• Chart of Accounts: A master account can have a hierarchy of detail accounts underneath it.This allows similar account types (e.g. Cash, Bank, Stock) to be grouped into one master account (e.g. Assets). You can also import an existing account hierarchy from GnuCash desktop.

• Split Transactions: A single transaction can be split into several pieces to record taxes, fees, and other compound entries.

• Double Entry: Every transaction must debit one account and credit another by an equal amount. This ensures that the "books balance": that the difference between income and outflow exactly equals the sum of all assets, be they bank, cash, stock or other.

• Income/Expense Account Types (Categories): These serve not only to categorize your cash flow, but when used properly with the double-entry feature, these can provide an accurate Profit&Loss statement.

• Scheduled Transactions: GnuCash has the ability to automatically create and enter transactions.

• Export to GnuCash XML, QIF or OFX: GnuCash can export your accounts/transactions in different formats for use in other programs. Also, scheduled exports to 3rd-party sync services like DropBox and Google Drive can be enabled.

• Reports: View summary of transactions (income and expenses) as pie/bar/line charts

• Homescreen widget for quick access to your accounts and recording of transactions

NOTE: that the app does not offer full compatibility with GnuCash for the desktop. You cannot synchronize between the desktop app and this one. But you can import your accounts and transactions from GnuCash XML files.

What does the app use the requested permissions for?
• READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: Used to export transactions/accounts to the SD card
• RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED: Used to restart service for scheduled transactions or exports after device is rebooted
• VIBRATE: Used to provide haptic feedback when entering some inputs
• WAKE_LOCK: Used for keeping device active when exporting scheduled transactions in the background service
• INTERNET/ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE: Used when exporting accounts/transactions to 3rd-party service like Google Drive or DropBox

It works most of the time, but I've had some trouble with it crashing and not exporting. It seems like killing and restarting the app fixes the export problem. September 2020: these issues seemed to have been fixed. It works great for me. I haven't figured out how to split transactions. March 2022: Great app. Continual improvements.

I love the fact that this app can work on any devices and still share the same data with ease. You simply export a file from the PC and import it into the Mobile App and vice versa. I gave it a 4 instead of 5 mainly from a business perspective. U woukd like to see dimension management and more towards business and non-profit management.

I love using it as a double entry ledger so I can get the dates of my debits and credits correct--I use my credit card a lot for online purchases, but pay my bill every month. This app is great because of it's flexibility! It could use a few more report types, but I use the desktop version for that

I am enjoying this app immensely. I would give 5 stars but there is always room for improvement. First, the recurring transactions do not work correctly unless you set the up on the day you want them to occur if it is a weekly transaction. Second, all transactions appear correct in the app but when I imported my qif export into the desktop version, all transactions were reversed if what they should be. Otherwise, this is awesome and I just wish it was an open source project like the desktop ver.

The app meets all of my needs which are very basic. GnuCash desktop was the Quicken replacement when Quicken changed to yearly billing. This Android apps uploading capability is a useful tool. Since my need is only to enter transactions on the go, this is great. I dont need to be synced with the desktop as multiple users input from their devices. What would be most helpful is the ability to export, clear the totals BUT not clear the descriptions.

This app has basically offers everything it promises. Improvements needed 1. Add an option to use debit and credit instead of increase, decrease, charge etc. Keep it option for the convenience of those who don't like it. 2. When I make an entry in one A/C , I have to choose the other account for the corresponding change, which takes me to a big list that I don't wanna scroll through, instead I wanna write the account name so that it comes up or the list get shorter.

Best mobile bookkeeping app. Just needs more features from the desktop version. I would love more reports. One problem I had though is that sometimes a transaction gets duplicated, messing up the balances. But as I am an individual user I don't have too many accounts to manage so it's easy to fix and know what went wrong.

It works, kind of. I spent many hours setting up accounts and transactions, primarily to learn how it worked. Could not figure out how to print. Could not figure out how to create non graphic reports. When I came back the next day, all my transactions disappeared! I figured it was from backing up. I've been using the desktop version for years, which is far more advanced. I just deketed the app. I believe creating a spreadsheet would be a lot better.

Met most of the features I needed for personal finance Mgt such as custom accounts, exporting, reports & charts, and password access. However, entered transactions aren't editable. Meaning mistakes on transactions can only be corrected by deleting and entering a new transaction. Finally, it will be great if a budgeting system is added.

I like the desktop software, but this app is not really compatible with it. I can't open my file on the app, and apparently if you enter transactions on the app you have to go through this whole manual export process to get them onto your desktop document. Not worth the effort, so it's kind of one or the other, app or desktop.

It's simple enough for every day use and power full enough to have years of data. You can export your data to dropbox for example and keep working on your PC, I'm sure thia app has a lot of tool I'll never use b/c I'm just a normal user but i can assure it has hundreds of usages for real world enterprises, best of all it's open source 👏👏

Pretty good supplement to the Desktop Application. Hasn't been updated in a while. Dropbox integration works, but was a bit confusing to set up for me. Gnucash is Free (as in freedom) and ad free which is GREAT! Honestly, I'd like to see a port of the full program. Phones and Tablets are certainly capable of handling the workload. I make these critiques with the understanding that this software is written by unpaid developers that owe me nothing.

Good overall, but all experience ruined by inability to export - any options (csv, qif or xml) result to corrupt or empty files. First time, last summer, it took me hours to complete export. That's why i didn't want to do that again, but now 7-8 months passed, Ive been trying today to export to desktop over an hour, but all export files are corrupt or empty and desktop gnu cannot read them. With no easy and stable ability to export, this app is useless... Too much frustration out it...

Excellent companion app to main desktop app. Extremely reliable and stable. However there is need for a comprehensive Help Manual. Absolutely fantastic app.

After opening a new account book, the widget doesn't show the balance any more. Stays on $0.00. There seems to be a conflict with the previous account book, which balance still shows up. Cleaning data and cache doesn't solve this problem as installing the app again.

Decent no frills expense tracker. Crashes occasionally on switching books, which is a little annoying. It would be nice to be able to have charts for books that are not in the default app currency.

You can record your financial data on your mobile phone anywhere and then import it into the desktop app. It doesn't leak personal data to any FAMG enterprise. Thank you Gnu! Kudos! Edit: There's a "divide by zero" error that occurs when exporting a large quantity of transactions, 2+ months worth for example.

you need to understand double entry bookkeeping, but then it is a perfect little app to record credit card and cash transactions. all other transactions I can import from my banks website but credit card and cash come imported from this app. works perfect. cool app!

This is not a fully fledged finance app on your phone, and it doesn't try to be. But it's very good for capturing details of your spending as it happens, before you forget about it, as an easy first step of getting that data into your desktop GnuCash.

Geez I know it's free software but can't even import one accounts transactions without the program hanging and crashing. why doesn't someone invent a software that lets you in before making you jump through a bunch of hoopla. It's takes the most time to reconcile.
