GoodSAM Alerter

The speed at which lifesaving care can be delivered varies incredibly the world over. The UK has some of the fastest ambulance response times in the world, however in London, a first responder only arrives within 8 minutes to an immediately life threatening call 70% of the time and outside of London this is only achieved in 50% of calls. In such events this can be too late; irreparable brain and heart damage can occur within a couple of minutes.
When patients suffer a head injury they often stop breathing although their brain is actually not itself injured. Opening an airway and giving basic life support can radically alter the outcome for these patients. The problem has been finding people who can do this, alerting them and rapidly getting them to the patients.

There are, of course, thousands of people with such skills; off-duty doctors, nurses, police officers, first aiders are all "Good Samaritans" who are simply unaware of the emergency going on next door or outside their building. The Good SAM App uses the technology that can notify these people and help the person in need.

Who Are We?

Good SAM is a community of people – Good Samaritans – happy to assist if they are the closest person to a medical emergency. They are trained in first aid and may have additional skills. They can maintain an airway, help stop bleeding and, if necessary, perform life saving, high quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or use a defibrillator.

The "SAM" in the name not only refers to Samaritan, but is also an acronym for “Smartphone Activated Medics”.

What Are The Apps ?

We are publishing two applications; GoodSAM Alerter and GoodSAM Responder. The GoodSAM Alerter app uses locational services to track the location of a person in need of a help; after a call is triggered we know exactly where the person is located.

On the other hand, the GoodSAM Responder app continuously sends locational updates to our server to allow the location of volunteer doctors/first-aiders to be tracked so they can be notified of any emergencies occurring around them. For more information please refer to "www.goodsamapp.org".

Which Countries Are Supported ?

Our aim is to potentially cover all the large cities around the globe.

Terrible. Not clear there are 2 Apps and all badly described. Eventually found the Alerter one only to be told I have already registered and been sent an email. Never had one and cannot now use it until I register with the missing email!!! Better be careful after choosing a country because if you touch anywhere near that part of the screen it will change your country.

I was an early adopter of this and still see value in using it. The defib uploader I suspect has become a bit of a thorn in its side. HOWEVER don't let that put you off using the app. Crucially, the "ALERTER" functionality works well and that is what it is for. Defibs are useful, but good CPR is adequate in their absence. My advice to the Devs: drop the defib functionality. Emergency Services already know where they are when you call them. It'll save you running storage costs for the app too

Asks for very extensive permissions without saying why, then asks for an email address and password and threatens to remember you forever if you provide it. Has no functionality at all if you don't. Poor data security practices and I uninstalled it promptly rather than accepting such poor terms. Lots of potential for such an app but this one doesn't seem trustworthy or decently designed. An interview with Professor Mark Wilson sold me on the concept, the app unsold me.

Its a pity its not linoed to the reponder app. Ive got both in addition to being a CFR and the Responder App has my detaiks logged vut ive had to set up a new ac with the alerter and as such it constantly tells me im the closest responder!...time will tell on both. I dont think its advertised enough in the uk for use. Its not great when you have to be constantly logged to internet to use it...unless im mistaken...

An excellent idea but absolutely no instructions. There's a simulate button but no guide as to what to do, what will happen etc. I'm petrified of accidentally starting a real emergency on it so I've now got the app installed but completely clueless how to use it!

Doesn't Work. Couldn't get past the register page. When you click 'accept' terms, nothing happens. Also says you've been sent an activation email, but it never arrives. Waste of time. Uninstalled ☹

Missed my first alert because it was silent. All my volume options on phone are at 100%. Have reinstalled it and still runs simulation in silent. It was very loud a few days ago when I tried it.

Never received validation email so I was never able to sign in. Whenever I attempted to sign in it told me I had to validate my registration through the email they sent me first. Attempts to reregister (couldn't find a way to request they resend the email) didn't work either.

Can't register The register button doesn't work. The app tells me that I've been sent a validation email. I haven't. Seems like a great idea, but an idea is all it seems to be.

It would seem that you need to use forgot my password to actually get a password that works. the password you regester with your email will not work use the links sent to you in your e-mail this is a really good app take the time to set it up.

Where have I gone I have been volunteering since 2020 and have been working but kept this running and logged in today and all of a sudden I've completely vanished

Get very little interaction from app. Can get so far, then the screen askse to do something and then says it can't do it. Can't upload photo, but why do I need to anyway when I am just making phone calls. But can't get beyond that screen. Sorry, but you have lost me

Have to scroll down to bottom but cannot accept conditions and move to the next screen on my mobile..so cannot finish registering. Shame it'd save lives if it worked.

i just downloaded this app and thought i'd pressed the button to 'simulate' an emergency but actually rang the emergency services, that's embarrassing!!! Probably my own stupid fault though...

Tim. R. Mar 24, 2019

What ever you do don't try the stimulate an emergency buttom. it will ring the emergency services. Pleade fix app developer as the services dont have the manpower to deal with this.

Hopeless, csnt do nothing as when ive tried to register woth 3 different emsils it still says that I need to register and open the rmail sent by them, but I still havent had it. Dissapointing to say the least.

Great idea, but app will not keep all my details, and emergency contact number saved.

Spins on 'register' so is unusable. Android 4.4. Pity, it's a good idea.
