Google Voice is without a doubt my fav VOIP calling app. The calls have been clear, texts easier than with the native Android SMS app, lots of options, and the Voice number is not only local, but corresponds to "local realities" (the county line is a mile down the road from me, so a lot of people in this immediate area are assigned phone #s from the neighboring county and city by the big phone carriers). It is hit & miss with the other apps. Very pleased with Google Voice so far!
Updated 20220511: This app is my go to for work. I can have calls on my laptop, work phone, and cell. Highly recommend it. Old review: For some reason my calls are not ringing and aren't going to voicemail. Initially started when I attempted do not disturb on my phone settings. Voice cannot bypass it regardless of how notifications are set. Other that it's fine for texting and outgoing calls.
I use this for contacting clients. I like that I can integrate it to my Gmail contacts. Main downside is that contacts I add in Voice show up in my regular messaging/phone apps. I like having the option to screen calls, get voicemail transcripts (not always accurate but close enough), and have an outgoing voicemail message just like any other phone number. I wish the notifications would show on my Fitbit like the others from my phone do.
Google Voice has improved in call quality and connection. It would frequently drop out or have voice stuttering glitch, but not recently. It's great to have VoiceMail transcribed as well. The update on the app is much improved with better keyboard integrated to allow for emoji's, Gif. The Chromebook app is limited in texting and photo selection and could be updated.
I never actually had a chance to use the app for a call. I had problems with the app updating so much and causing problems with my Pixel phone that I had to uninstall. A year and more later and a new Pixel as well and the app is terrific. Thanks Google team. Update as of 5/22. App works perfectly and exceeds my expectations. It did seem to be as you suggested, device specific. I did turn it off and back on again, as well. Thanks Google!
This app does everything I need while living overseas. I've been traveling to Asia and South America for about 8 years, and I can use this to call home to the USA for free anywhere that I have internet access. It has made life a lot easier and very much much cheaper then buying a SIM card and paying international rates in the countrys I've visited and lived in. Sign up for your own Google voice number and install this app if you're traveling internationally you'll save hundreds of dollars.
Really Great but needs some work - Works well as a business phone - Needs connections with Google Assistant and Android Auto so you can use voice commands while driving - It would be nice if you could copy paste photos into web app vs having to physically insert an attachment - Needs a bit more integration with nautral phone features - Would be amazing if the business section of Google Messages used my voice number. But overall this is an amazing app, and I hope they really put time into it!
Used it as a business # for 10+ years, works great, good call quality, always get messages/texts, it transcribes voice mail pretty accurately, I only ever double check last names and numbers. I wish it was more consistent on my caller ID - it should either always just say "fwd from: my business name", or always just show the caller ID number, but that's a small complaint 🤷🏼♂️
An invaluable tool when I travel abroad. I have to amend my review. Google voice is no longer reliable for phone calls. Texting seems to still work Ok, but Google seems to be working hard to undo all the good things they developed in the past. Update:. Things appear to be back to normal. I can make and receive calls from the US while abroad. A great tool. Thank you Google! UPDATE: This application continues to be the best for staying in contact while traveling abroad.
I love Google voice. I have used it multiple times for a work number from the same phone, and it's only gotten better through the years. Still a bit slow at identifying Google voice calls vs regular cellular calls, but more features keep being added and I know it's getting closer. And it's so nice to be able to text for work as well. Voicemail is still in the works, but does very well. Sometimes my work voicemails end up in my personal box and I forget about them. Keep it up google team!!
04.29.2022 This app used to be much better. Now it has many bugs. I added a contact on the Android app, but the contact DOESN'T show on the computer contacts! 01.12.2022 I updated to the latest version, but it doesn't show notifications for sms and calls! It used to work until recently! This app used to be amazing. Fast, and messages would always send. The new version is slow to load, slow to show my text messages. How can I install the previous version from 2018?
Voice is truly a life saver right now. It does what I need it to. I do wish that notifications were more visible. On the Pixel 3a XL the small bubble badge would help if it were numbered. Sometimes the bubble doesn't always show even though there's uread msgs or missed calls. That may have more to do with my phone than the app itself I think. Not sure. But what I am sure of is how useful this app has been in the past few days. Thank you Google Voice.
App is OK. It performs most general functions as any other calling/text/media option. PROS: offers you an alternative way to communicate. CONS: requires you to have a Google account. Does not allow you to make calls every time. Receive error messages telling you "No Wi-Fi" when my wifi is clearly operating. You can't use independently. Doesn't allow you to create a separate contact list it ask you to link your existing. Requires too much access to your whole phone in order to operate.
Edit 8 May 2022 - And why does it seem custom text notifications disappear when there is an app update? If you've got specific notifications, you end up having to reset them. The limit of 7 contacts on a message thread is a PITA. When you're trying to coordinate a group, it's definitely too few. Is working really well for me, and I like being able to message on my PC.
Has allowed me to keep in contact with a single number after switching between many phones/phone providers/countries, and even during periods where I've lost my phone by being able to accept and make call on a computer. Call connection and voice quality is usually good, but can be hit or miss at times. Answering calls to the Google number on multiple phones and even landlines works too.
Most users of secondary communication platforms (voice, TextNow) need the ability to call due to not having active service on their device. Requiring an active line, even when on WiFi, in order to place a call is really... Stupid. Especially due to the fact I can use my tablet to place calls from within Voice using my wifi connection. This needs to be standard across phones and secondary devices. If I recall correctly, it once was a uniform function in earlier versions.
Great app. Would be great if international emojis worked or sending videos. As well as sending several pics at once. Love the spam option, can filter messages and calls without blocking. Goes in a special folder. Don't have to use my real cell number for years and I love it. Also, it works on phones that only have Wi-fi access, no data. That way my work phone is separate than my creative phone. And can use a hotspot for the work phone. :) Ty
Voice is surprisingly still here; I figured Google was killing it. Have had this service for about 15 years! Quality of calls has stabilized over the past few months, which is nice. Interface is overly complicated after this much time. For example: click off the app during a call, go back to the app. End call button is gone. Have to click a bar at top of screen. End call screen appears. The design of that screen is completely different from main interface. Bizarre.
Working well. Since updating my phone to Android 12, I'm not able to make calls or receive calls with my Bluetooth headset. All other phone apps are able to switch to Bluetooth. However, when trying to switch to bluetooth from the Sound drop down menu, it stays on the current setting. UPDATE: Yes , it was a device specific problem.
Really enjoy it I've had it for at least 3 years now and it's been excellent. I use it on different phones I use it with different numbers and they all speak clearly. No static noise background, no dropped calls unless I'm in bad range of either Wi-Fi or service. I would like the option of blocking unknown numbers from calling or texting but I hope that feature comes in the future. All in all best Wi-Fi phone service I've had by far
Greatest virtual phone service, I have used it for about 10 years, and it works like a champ. I continue to use an Android phone for its tight integration with Voice for phone calls. I wish it integrated better for text msgs as well, to be configured as the default messaging app (say when responding to an incoming call via text msg, which defaults instead to phone provider number). And the lack of International text messaging has been a gap that should be filled now.
This app did work great a few months ago, but now it misses almost every call and just shows up missed calls. You don't even know there is a missed call unless you open the app. I regularly use the app and we have it linked to a wifi only phone and to forward calls to a line that is cellular connection. I've been through the settings multiple times with no luck to resolve this issue. I'm also starting to get feedback that people aren't receiving my text messages either.
Since 2013, Voice still gives me everything a mobile app should: functionality I now find indispensable that I didn't even know I needed. Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because Google continues to tamper with the app. Over the years, the ever-evolving constraints, stipulations, requirements etc. have made Voice less, not more, easy-to-use. But make no mistake--it's still one of the most revelatory apps I've ever used, and if it disappeared tomorrow, my life becomes much more difficult.
It's ok but not working properly. When I get a call my ringtone does not work. The screen turns on and vibrates but no ringtone. I have double checked everything to make sure all the settings are correct. Messages work fine. I have researched many fixes but none of them work. Google please help me and many others out and patch this. I am using a LG G8. I used to use hangouts and everything worked fine. I've already tried clearing the cache and even clearing data and setting up voice on my phone again. Neither worked.
Edit: As stated, I CANNOT send feedback using the app menu, because there is NO menu on my app screen... Only a message that says it's not available in my area, and a line to "switch account". Nothing else. ***** It would be nice to have this app available in France. (and no, I can't use the app to send feedback because, when I open the app, it tells me straight away it's not available in my country, on a blank page, with no icon or menu or anything else to navigate to the feedback section)
