My daughter and I tried this. We both experienced same thing on our Android phones --Moto G4 and G5. Our own position kept updating, but position of the other was 30+ minutes stale. Not of any use that way! Also, my phone lacks compass but when I am walking many apps calculate compass, that would be highly useful!
