GPS ILS

VFR flight ONLY!!!
(1) Voice vertical guidance into any airport. This helps flying consistent & safer short field VFR approaches into runways with no vertical guidance.(2) "Flight Analysis" to review the approach precision and improve from feedback on every flight.

============================================================

How does it work? (reference 1st App Screenshot)* Connect Phone audio to headset, adjust audio volume* Select desired approach* Identify "Green Arrow" in HSI and turn aircraft to Top of Descent. (67 deg)
* Localizer bar is "red" indicating that loc is past the right limit.
* Localizer will turn "yellow" once in range* "White Arrow" in HSI is the direction of touchdown point. (60 deg)* "Yellow Arrow" in HSI is the direction of final approach course. (37 deg)* Descent to "TOD altitude" (top of descent) using aircraft altimeter as reference
* Now a GREEN glide slope bar will appear and be centered
* As we approach the TOD and the synthetic ILS GP in "yellow" is coming down
* YELLOW ILS glide slope and the GREEN TOD glide slope will merge at TOD* Passing the TOD turn to the final approach course shown as "yellow" arrow* Descent with the YELLOW ILS glide slope* Voice will announce: "50 up", "Center", "Down 100" etc....* Menu: "Request Flight Analysis" after landing, suggest connecting via wifi* Examples and details at: http://www.reuter-family.com/gpsils/GPSILS_Details.pdf. Watch the example video of on an actual ILS: www.youtube.com/watch?v=85AdUUd-kZw

We are approaching the localiser on a 125 heading and a TOD altitude of 1200ft. We are about 60 ft too low. The Green, White and Yellow arrows show the direction to the TOD point, the touchdown zone and the approach course respectively.

As the localizer comes in we turn to 207 for the intercept.

As we approach the TOD the Green and Yellow GP merge. The green arrow swings around to the left indicating that we pass TOD on the right.

The decent with the GP starts. The white arrow is now hidden behind the yellow arrow. The TOD is now behind us and hence the green arrow is pointing to our 6 o' clock position.

The voice announcement are suppressed. However you can see the announcements in the upper left of the phone screen. "Up 80" for example. The app shows an altitude of 510 ft at touchdown. According to the charts the runway is at 517 ft.

Once we pass the touchdown zone the white arrow moves to the 6 o'clock position.

Note, we used an external Bluetooth GPS on the glare shield with a 5 Hz update frequency. Any change in color of the "accuracy" field indicates a new GPS data point. CAUTION, usage of the internal phone GPS may materially reduce the accuracy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqyAXyufBK8&feature=youtu.be shows a good match between GPS and ILS. At 1000 ft agl the tower switches the approach from circle to land to straight in. Compare the two glide slopes.

Further comparison of the app to an actual ILS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGLHkozNBRwCourchevel with Audio announcement for altitude correction: www.youtube.com/watch?v=P__OlISD3xgScenic Courchevel (LFLJ) approach: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNFNFZq2BFY

The app asks for the pilots e-mail address. The address is attached to log files and makes it possible to send comments back. Privacy is ensured. Upload/download of data may best be done when connected to internet via wifi. The data stays private.

To add more approaches drop me an e-mail or press the request button on the phone. 37,000 approaches can be down loaded via "Menu->Download Approaches".

verging on being really good. I really like this app except that i can't select a destination airport some miles away from home, when i search there are never any results for UK icao codes although I can use nearest to select my local airport. I don't want to be fiddling around near the destination trying to find an airport

Good piece of work. Only problem is if the gps signal is cut suddenly the display freezes and there is no indication that anything is wrong. It just looks like you are flying perfectly :) if you don't have gps when you select a new approach it also doesn't update the CDI or set the inbound course. Do a mod so it gives a 'nav flag' if the gps doesn't update for say 3 seconds, give an option for using baro altitude instead of gps and it will be 5 stars!

I had this app for a while and finally wanted to test it. It asked for my email but immediately crashed. Unusable on Nexus 6P

Perfect for practice and proficiency and maybe backup reference on np approach. Agree approach update should give feedback and warning when gps stops on approach. Maybe a warning light of some kind.

The app asks for an email so it can send me an activation email, but it never sends the email. Yes, I did check my spam folder. Nothing there.

I use this to practice precision approaches at an airport where no such facilities are installed. I have found the vertical guidance to be erratic, especially when compared to the PAPI indications on a stabilized descent. Since my mobile device lacks a barometer, it relies on GPS data for altitude info, which in turn should provide more accurate vertical guidance. That doesn't happen so I wonder what's wrong...

I use it on a Samsung S3. Great app for a back up instrument. I recommend downloading the manual for those who want to customize the approaches. I did it for our airfield which has a 4degree glide slope, and it worked flawlessly.

It keeps saying it's going to email me a key but one never comes.

This is a useful, well written app. It is obvious the author spent a lot of time on the details, and it all works very well. Thank you Dierk!

I am an amateur pilot and I used this app today for the first time, it is really good, and has potential, once I find out how to really make it work, to be extremely useful. I think an amazing amount of work has went into this app and it's free, thank you Dierk for making my flying even more fun 😃 Well Done!!!

Not helpful if it doesn't have an approach within 3200nm

Geo. P. Feb 2, 2016

Very good application!!! Maybe the user could select the descent angle in order to match the screen output with the real approach!

Har. S. May 10, 2015

the process of updating approaches should be made visible so that one is aware that the approaches are updated

Asks for email and activation key. Avoid.

Mat. S. Apr 30, 2016

Keeps asking for a key

It looks like a great potential app, but I can't get it to load any approaches other than the two it comes with. Tried requesting and downloading additional approaches, but no luck.

It keeps asking for activation.

One of the best Apps for pilots !!

This is a nice back-up or just for SA....Thank You

What a nice app - there are alot of incomplete apps, and pseudo-ILSes have many of those. This app is complete, nice, and intuitive - thanks for a superb pice of code!

tool is running stable on galaxy 2 and I#m sure it will run perfect in pratice as well. for me importent: the developper is friendly, requests will be answered promptly an new airfields will be added in short time. I think there is a lot of potential in the tool....

I think this is a superb piece of software and it has thus far run faultlessly on my Google Nexus. I'm currently doing an IMC rating and my instructor is so impressed with this that he has bought a Nexus purely to run this and the other excellent apps from the same stable. Thank you, Dierk, I think you're a star.

Runway numbers for LTBA (which is one of the most crowded airport in Europe) is wrong, navigational engine of the furthermore app is not working

Pat. B. Nov 25, 2016

Requires an email address and activation process before it will even open. Seems appropriate for a paid version with some form of data subscription rather than a free app.

Database limited to very few airports. Only major international airports listed.
