Maybe it's just me but I never had any problems understand the concepts of programming or language, being a linguist when learning from paper books at university, where it was clearly and simply explained. It should be easier with technology and it sometimes is. But not with this app. programming is the easy bit. Figuring out what buttons do what on my device seems theost moronic but hardest stuff to master. Teaching is a separate skill from content being taught....Some can, some can't teach...

Borderline unusable because it doesn't allow the user to just type in the code themselves. You have to select from a list of options which sometimes won't allow you to fill it out as you wish (like in the Word Checker section). It also teaches you how to write if statements more efficiently yet never actually allows you to use that in practice.

Grasshopper is decent. The first two courses, the introductions are clear and helpful. Something changes in intro to interviewing. I don't know if the explanations get more confusing or that they run out of practice problems by then but I think I hit a wall. It could definitely learn something from other apps like mimo or sololearn.

Completely free, no ads. However the way you add code is so clunky and difficult to deal with. You don't just type parentheses, for example, you have to select the word you want to put parentheses around and then hope it puts them around the word but it won't, it will inevitably put them at the end of the word then you have to select them again and hope a back space will remove only the parentheses but no, it erases all the code you've written so far. Frustrating

Only used less then 60 minutes so far, but seems like a really good app. The one thing that steals a star in the raring is the keyboard on smartphones, more precisely Autocorrect, Autocomplete but mainly Capitol first letter. Downloading a separate keyboard and switching to send a message is a hassle. Make it simple, preferably automatic and it's 5/5.

I am very impressed about your content and the pattern. But, if you add a more thing that is, the extra tasks and the worksheet. One more thing, add a video for every topic which contain some more information about the topic in the most used languages or captions . In the last, I say that keep it up. 🥰

Trying it again after not using this one for a year but it gets too difficult very fast. My personal gripe is that when it starts getting to the intro to interview, it should explain things more in depth such as what each part of the code is doing because I'm following the instructions but I don't know what I'm doing and I feel like that's 99% of the learning process. I made it to the shape up exercise but I have no idea what the code is doing because it's so intensely complicated.

I am an experienced IT professional with a fairly long career as programmer/developer and this app just made me smile from ear to ear. The programming concepts are all very well defined and designed, so much that it shows how everything was created with love and care. The game is fun, cute, but not at all silly. To be honest, some parts are really challenging for the beginner (I loved the recursion exercises), but not as much as to become a frustrating experience. Good job Laura and everyone!

This review is coming from a student who wants to get into UX design and learn coding- the concept overall is great! In the beginning I felt as if I was learning without "filler words". However, as I progressed through the tasks. I began to notice (as well as other reviews) that I was learning what it would take to move on to the next step, rather than actually learning. The visuals are great! However, it fails when it comes to the experience of the user overtime.

The idea is wonderful but there's room for improvement. The app is easy and fun to navigate. I love the Grasshopper icon. The concept of the app is great and the feeling of accomplishment is awesome. However, after awhile you feel like you're just following directions rather than learning. I understand the idea behind following steps and keeping things simple, but at some point w need to have assignments without guidance since the concept was given prior the exercise. Constructive criticism

At first, I thought it was so basic and easy to learn. But then, in the fundamentals II, the lessons are so hard to understand especially on the functions. But still, the app is great to learn the basics of coding. Although, the app wont turn you into a programmer, and probably you wont be using coding after finishing the course, at least we will be familiar of the signs and symbols we see on the computer that makes us curious.

This app is a great introduction to programming in JavaScript! I haven't finished its course, so I'm not entirely sure how close I can get to being fluent just by using it, but it breaks down each concept into an easily digestible idea. The end of the first chapter is a sort of text-based adventure type of format, but you have to answer with code! It makes for a really intuitive way to internalize concepts.

Awesome. Thank you for what is essentially a free college course. The only reason I dodnt give 5 stars is because each level is only played once with the option for a rehash. Before I kndw it I was too far in to really absorb the lesson and had to replay old ones. There is a re-do, but its not encouraged/rewarded much. There needs be practice lessons (think math class homework). Some sort of structure for repetition. As it is I sped through it and got way too ahead of myself and had to go back

I have no prior knowledge or experience of coding. I dont know if I'm just that smart, or if this app is just that "choice word" awesome, but I'm learning how write javascript, and this app breaks it down perfectly. It offers hints for all the problems, and if that's not enough, it offers a walk through for them. Great Learning Application! I highly recommend it.

Not the best one out there. I felt like there is only one acceptable solution to the puzzles (while technically there are plenty of). The app was limiting the function choices to make each exercise easier but I found it frustrating for most of the time. Sometimes I wasn't sure what was the aim of exercise, instructions were a bit unclear, not properly structured to be digestible for a beginner. The support section was much more logical and well explained. Cute design though.

This is an excellent app for learning the basics of coding. The examples are fun and relevant to the concepts being taught. The JavaScript syntax is made pretty easy with an intuitive clickable interface. There are even a few fun features such as the ability to dress up the grasshopper character as you progress through the lessons. One of the most enjoyable coding apps I've used.

Iva. O. Mar 26, 2020

Seems like an effective teaching tool, though it is a little restrictive sometimes (as far as letting you play with your code to see how things work). The interface with the phone keyboard is a little clumsy, but given that the phone keyboard was not designed for this kind of stuff at all, it makes the best of the situation. I've gotten farther in Grasshopper than I have with any other "learn to code" program, and that's no small feat.

At first I got excited! It is a quite good app to get into JS. However, there is a point where the lessons are a bit blurry, as in the theory to practice aspect. So, I have to check the forum and restudy stuff because it feels too vague. I imagine people feeling lost and giving up, which is a pity. I try to revisit things so I can move on, otherwise I complete the lessons mechanically, not being sure of what I am doing. Maybe reconsider your structure a bit. All in all, thank you.

I think the app is well designed and encouraging, but it's not a good teaching/learning tool. It doesn't make the user think critically, it spoonfeeds answers and then says you've accomplished a much bigger task than you actually have. If I wrote an essay and had someone change a few commas to periods, I wouldn't say they then know how to write an essay, and that's what this app feels like it does.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to programming, so I need an app that can take me right back to basics. This app is wonderfully simple and very engaging. It gives you nice, structured activities, with little rewards to make you feel good about your progress. The little grasshopper sprite adds a delightful visual element, so you feel like you're playing a game as you progress. I hope the developers put out more apps like this one, based on other languages. Nice work team and thanks for making my early coding experience a positive one!

Jef. P. Jan 23, 2019

This app is exactly what I've been looking for. A fun, yet practical (visual) way to learn code - at my pace. Coding will soon be as needed, as knowing how to use a computer or sending an email. And the working class don't always have time, for long courses. Especially if they have new families. This app is brilliant. I hope the app continues into the more tricky end of things (once I'I've mastered the basics)

I'm enjoying it so far, but there seems to be a design flaw in way you scroll through the input options at the bottom of 'your solution' code. It's nearly impossible to get it to settle on the last page without it flipping to the glossary at the end. Pretty frustrating. Otherwise, great little program.

I love this app, the way it teaches you to code makes it enjoyable and fun, makes you want to learn to code. I love how it gives you clues, quizzes, how you are able to enter and make code run to test if you did right or not. Love the final exams, tests me on what I have learned gets me thinking and problem solving to come up with the correct answer. Has many levels. Love the sound everytime you get the answer correct. Wish there was a similar app for the other computer languages.

So far, so good. Other coding apps I have tried teach you a tiny bit, then have a bug where you can't go any further. I kind of wish I had to type in all the formatting marks so that I will remember what they are. Aside from that, I have no complaints: the lessons are intuitive and engaging, and they are presented in small chunks that are easily digested in a few minutes.

I came into this app having only played with basic and Scratch, and to be honest I was expecting another do three lessons then pay 9.99 a month. This is not that. While obviously it can't teach everything I can tell you that I have learned more coding than I ever thought I could. The structure is fantastic, various question types, practice coding with lovely graphics and helpful hints. I cannot even begin to express how happy I am. This app makes learning code attainable for me. Thank you.
