Gravity Box - Minimalist Physics Game

Gravity Box is a minimalist, skill-based physics puzzle where you use blasts to push a box around, hopefully in the finish point.

The early levels will teach you how to play the game and present the basic concepts: you are equipped with a rocket launcher used by tapping on the screen. Blasts are created where the rocket explodes.

The game's difficulty consists in using the right amount of force by launching rockets at the right distance and angle.

It's time to remember the laws of motion!

In theory this would be a good idea. In practice this was a frustrating experience. Yes, it gave me vibes of TF2 rocket jumping. That was nice. But in TF2 you can kind of visualize where you're gonna land and where you're shooting while airborne. A touchscreen on a moving environment is *not* a precision tool. It's just frustrating. Maybe it would've been interesting with a fixed camera that looks at the whole stage, or that would keep the cube at the center more tightly.

Simple graphics are normally something that holds games back, but when you combine those simple graphics with simple mechanics and simple goals, the game can become addictive and entertaining, along with being beautiful in a way dispite its simplicity. This game encapsulates this perfectly. Gj, whoever the dev is. I would donate some money, but I'm a filthy little rat, and as such, I am rather fond of my own money. Keep doing what your doing. Seriously I have a problem with this game. I need it

Fun little game! Request: Make the reset button bigger so it's easier to hit quickly. Half the time I end up firing into the air instead of resetting. Regarding getting stuck under 45-degree downward platforms, how about making them triangles, or adding invisible objects under/behind them so the box can't get in there in the first place? I'm not sure what is possible in this regard, but it would let you get around the limitations of the physics engine. Lastly, $#&@% level 172 🤬

I think the concept and general execution are great. The levels do a good job of teaching the player how the game works and how to use the "explosions" to their fullest. However, I believe after doing 20 levels, that I've noticed two things. The first is that it feels like there's a "delay" after being one explosion, in which any consecutive ones fail to add onto the momentum/inertia of the cube. The second is that the explosions only really feel capable of launching you in 8 directions.

it's a really good game. The UI is great, and every part of the game is beautifully simplistic. I feel bad that there aren't any ads that I've seen besides the one for skipping. Also, a few suggestions: I think it'd be cool to have special levels only allow a certain amount of shots to get to the finish, which I guess would also entail adding another category in the level select screen. Also, maybe "skins" like a triangle or other shapes would be fun to have. p.s. Thanks Reddit

I've played through 216 of the game's levels and I have to say, it's surprisingly good for a mobile game. The concept is simple but still leaves room for many interesting ideas. My reason for not giving 5 stars is simply due to 2 reasons: No community levels. The difficulty from level to level is very inconsistent, and the levels themselves often just come down to luck (sort of).

The game is pretty fun and kind of addictive. Sometimes the acutal physics are kinda off and not very consistent, but not too much to throw off the game. My only complaint is the leaderboard system. If your someone trying to just play calm simple game, the leaderboard system can kind of make you feel a little stressed out, as its pretty much always at the bottom of your screen. Perhaps having a way to turn off leaderboards would solve this issue.

The controls are too precise. Attempting to do the same exact angle twice is borderline impossible. Levels are basically 5 parts luck to 1 part skill because of that. Finishing levels with a decent ranking doesn't feel like an accomplishment; it feels like a fluke almost every time. || It's a good, if familiar, concept, but it's plagued by inconsistency of movement. I really want to like it, but it's such a let down in practice. So much promise; so much disappointment.

Absolutely adore it. Everything feels nice, consistent, and intentional. If I failed a try at something, I know its on me and can try many other ways to solve the puzzles, sometimes a way that didn't seem would work. The fact that it doesn't even need many words or an explicit toturial and yet still gets you quickly and effectively familiarized with the mechanics shows skill. I really can't express how much I love it. Keep up the really good work

It succeedes in what it set out to do really well. it got me hooked from start to end. Since it is, in some ways, a platformer, I understand that the difficulty curve comes from making progressively harder jumps. Problem is, the latter levels becomes somewhat annoying because of the lack of precision from your fingers. I would recommend people to use a pen. Otherwise, great game!

EDIT: The developer does actually read the reviews. 5 stars man! Minimalist is correct. No unnecessary sounds or music. Just you and the game. In case anyone is worried about ads, I went 22 levels before a single ad played. Only reason I put 4 stars is I think the menu button should be placed somewhere else as I will try to shoot beneath but I hit the menu. Unfortunately, time continues even as you are in it so it could definitely be moved to a place that isn't commonly used.

An interesting game. Often fun, but it seems like it's disingenuous about its leaderboards, or maybe there's a glitch - there's no way I've got the uncontested record in 3 of the first 15 stages, for instance. Furthermore, there are factors which aren't necessarily luck-based, but which are too precise to be reasonably controlled, such as bouncing off corners, getting sorta stuck in acute angles, and rolling.

I love these types of games where you move around in a unique way. I would hope to someday see a not minimalist version with more gimics, and maybe slightly different movement options. I did not enjoy how much friction the walls seemed to have. I guess they need to be a bit sticky for the purpose of stopping but since you can shoot the bullets as much as you like I think you should be able to be a bit more slidy. Still an awesome game :)

I love physics puzzling, and trying to beat levels in as few moves as possible. But with no par goal to aim for, all I can really strive for is being personally better at the game than everyone else. Which gets old fast. The process quickly devolves into retrying the same exact level/route over and over again, because I know I can knock a move off my p.b. if I could just get the physics engine to behave. I would have slowed the game down, or picked a different shapes to play as.

It's a simple but fun game. At first the strategy behind moves feels random. But it very quickly evident that there is a method behind any move. There are even cool tricks you learn through the repetition of a level, and trial and error. It's not a big meaty game, but it's fun, a little frustrating, but rewarding if you want it to be. You also feel like a bit of a badass sometimes.

I liked this game a lot, it was unique and challenging unlike those "match 3" games. This game was very simple and straightforward and the satisfaction of completing the levels (in increasing level of difficulty) was worth the pain and struggle of getting the perfect angle shot and having to restart so many times. Also, the game itself looked very nice.

its impressive how well thought this is considering I'm close to level 200 and it still feels innovative. the only problem I have with it is if you fall out of bounds sideways, especially for tall levels, you have to fall all the way to the floor to reset. there should be a boundary line around the area instead of just a bottom. overall, great game!

Fis. S. Feb 3, 2020

The first level should be a more open environment to show that you shoot from the box instead of your finger. I only learned this fact at level 9. However, gameplay is extremely responsive and the levels are fun. The levels can be replayed immediately, and this is a huge plus. My only quarrel with this game is the abundance of ads, but the fun gameplay makes up for this. Maybe an ad free paid version or a level editor would be a nice addition Thank you for taking the time to read this :)

Game is simple but fun. But it is too difficult flinging the box in the right direction especially when the box moves close to the left or right side of the screen. when the box is there you don't have much space for your fingers to shot in that direction. oh and I like the way this game approaches ads. You don't get interupted in between every round by some obnoxious ads. But if you want to skip a level you need to watch some ads which is fair imo.

Great game. A really calming game, great graphics, creative levels and above average gameplay. A few suggestions though. I feel that the ranking detracts from the sense of calm that the game gives. You should keep it, but maybe as a dropdown, something optional. Another thing, maybe some unlockable skins. It would be a good idea to keep the same simple graphics, but more options is always nice.

I came from the reddit post. It's a great game, I especially enjoy the minimalist aesthetic and the simple mechanics. However, in the future, perhaps add a few more mechanics to the game? There could be like home screen where you could select levels, and there could be different types of levels. Some of have a portal that could take you across the entire level, or some could have a water mechanic where you can float or jump slower and have to avoid water based obstacles. Great work so far tho.

Addicting! Now that I've finished, I would love competitive modes like fastest time/least shots to complete individual levels and the whole game. Also there's definitely room to add more mechanics. Moving the menu button from the bottom to the top was a major improvement. Adding a few sound effects and/or some background music might be a nice touch. Edit: Scoreboard is great! It would be nice to know if you're the sole owner of rank #1. Maybe also display the number of players with the rank?

Truly minimalistic and fun. This game is simple and relaxing, yet challenging and satisfying. So many mobile games are bloated nowadays but this one is a nice change from them. Even the ads do not appear too often like other apps. You can even skip a level if you really want to but I personally refuse to give up on a level because completing it is so satisfying. You can tell this app is fluid by playing it and that a lot of work and thought was put into it despite it being so minimal.

Overall enjoyed the game. Simple, yet dynamic with lots of creativity. Some of the levels are frustrating (especially 82..) but the biggest issue I have is the UI. Why are the buttons at the bottom of the screen? Most of my taps are at the bottom. I constantly hit the menu or even reset mid level. Super counterintuitive.

Gravity Box is a great game. Just as the name proclaims, it is a minimalistic game. The game mechanics are simple and easy to figure out and work perfectly; tedious, but basically perfect. My only flaw with this game is that eventually in the levels you will get to a point in which each level seems impossible to complete. However despite this, I do have a recommendation for the developers and that would be to possibly add a player level design so that players can make their own levels for others

Sid. S. Jun 21, 2019

Amazing game, intuitive controls make it easy to pick but I swear these levels are so difficult until you understand the intricacies of the mechanics. No ads, genuinely fun, addicting to the point where I play it in the five minute water break but also easy to put away so I don't get too frustrated and come back with a fresh mind. Highly reccomend.

I am very impressed with this game as it is made by a single developer. It has qualities of a great mobile game, it's easy to play, has a competitive rank to keep you trying again and again, and is very consistent thanks to a single mechanic; you never feel like it's the game's fault you didn't hit the goal. My only recommendation would be for a toggle to change when the tap is registered, so it fires on the up as apposed to down.
