So fed up with this app. For months, possibly years now, I have been providing feedback to the Guardian on this. I use an Android phone and a Chromebook laptop and the app fails to load correctly - often a whole section comes up blank - today, 08/05/22, the culture and opinions/comments sections are not available. When it works, it's great, but most of the time the things I want to read don't load. BTW I AM PAYING FOR THIS - it's not free! So fed up with wasting time on it!
Basic functionality of the app is ok, but using it is uncomfortable for me due to complete lack of a dark mode. This app does not accommodate anyone with sight problems. Hence one star until this is fixed.
Keeps hanging. This happens when trying to access previous editions and sometimes in the current edition. Easy enough to use but very frustrating problems.
Really good concept to have digital versions of the printed media, but rendering of the page makes it unreadable - so it's not possible to give it more than one star.
Seems to be a "best of" version of the Guardian's other app (which is free). I'm not sure what the point of it is. It is certainly not "the [Guardian/Observer] newspaper reimagined for your phone or tablet" that I was promised when I signed up for the free trial, as there are huges swathes of the printed edition completely missing. On top of that, there is no landscape view available (which the free app has). Definitely not worth paying for. Uninstalling, and cancelling the trial forthwith.
This app is less fully-featured than the free Guardian app, which may seem strange given that this one requires a subscription. What you get is a simple, elegant way of reading the print version of the paper on your phone, with a few extras. Less editorialising, less clickbait, a clearer distinction between news and comment and more of what the print version of the Guardian is good for: deep, detailed news and analysis, which you can work through over the course of a day. I much prefer this one.
This app is infuriating. It SHOULD be an improvement on the previous version, it that it doesn't have to reload everything every time one switches back from another application, and it works (or should) on both an iPad and an android phone. But it's horrendously buggy, often forgetting to download, endlessly crashing and demanding a fresh log it - which it then refuses to complete. Almost unusable as a result, and I fear I may have to cancel my subscription until this gets sorted out.
Good design, with lots of images and a nice home page where you can scroll up and down through the sections and left and right through article summaries. Lacks a dark mode though which for me is essential, you don't seem to be able to customise text size, and it would be useful to be able to bookmark articles for reading later.
This app just refuses to work correctly for me. I'm currently on a 14 day trial subscription. Multiple times during the first week it has failed to show the newest issue, meaning I've had to delete and reinstall the app to get it to work correctly. Today I'm just getting an error saying it has connection issues and the refresh button does nothing, So I'm guessing another reinstall is going to happen once I'm on WiFi. Its unlikely I'll be continuing with the subscription after the trial.
I have just cancelled my Guardian subscription after the trial period came to an end. I shall really miss the Editions app... the limited number of articles is just enough to fill the free time I have in the day, and I like that it doesn't constantly update. I wish I could pay a reduced subscription and just receive this.... or have a free version of the Editions app supported by ads.
It loads a little slowly but not too bad. I'm not sure why they split the daily from the other guardian app but they'll probably hammer out the kinks as time goes on. Would like to be able to save articles and search for them here so I don't have to have two apps installed. Also currently this has very little customisability. I'd love to see some accessability changes such as colour filters for dyslexics, font size control, ability to have the articles read and compatability with Google home hub.
Just focusing on the app itself, rather than the content. Bit disappointed, the main app is a lot more reliable and intuitive. Find I'm often signed out when reading offline, even with the days edition downloaded, and not able to log on again until I have signal. Not great when you've just got on the tube. Unfortunately will be downgrading to just the premium app when my initial offer period expires. The daily edition not worth the extra expense as part of the digital pack.
When it works, it's great... but right now, today's issue is loading, but no photos. If I go to menu with all editions listed, then it's currently freezing. Sometimes it loads eventually. Often it won't let me look at anything if it thinks there's no internet connection. Just annoying
The Android version is unpredictable. It partially works on my Android 9 smartphone (individual articles are often missing with a "Sorry" message). It is virtually unusable on my Android 6 tablet as it constantly crashes. The app's data then has to be deleted and subscription credentials re-entered to have another brief try. The iOS version is better but is still buggy - reading a previous day's edition is fraught with problems such as losing pictures or reverting to the current day's edition.
Previous fingerprint identification issues have been fixed by an update, so I have updated my review. I love this app, it's a great visual way to consume The Guardian with the range and depth of content of the print edition, but not my most used device at my own convenience. My only challenge is reading it enough, as by the time it gets to later in the day then the Live App because a better source of the latest news.
Haven't had the bugs other users have mentioned (on Android and iPad) but this app needs some customisation, the text is quite small and would like to be able to size it up a notch. A week into my trial and I'm not sure it is worth the upgrade from the basic app.
Amazing. I've been waiting years for this on mobile. I really like daily editions vs having an endless, constantly updating, news stream. Great article-curation, simple clean design, distraction-free. Just what we need in this information-overloaded era. I would give it 6 stars if I could.
Crashes constantly. On Android 6.0 the latest version, which is supposed to run on Android 5 and above, crashes constantly. You have to clear the data and sign-in again to get about 5 minutes use before it crashes again. Come on Guardian you're supposed to be at the forefront of digital media.
I like the look, the layout, the content and the navigation of the app. My one, but major, complaint is how long it takes for the content to download and there doesn't seem to be a way of setting a download time such as overnight.
This app has limitations that don't exist on the standard version. Strangely you can't participate in comments as a subscriber. The layout is not good as the standard version making it harder to navigate on a tablet. It' has a nicer font and the crossword, but I'm sticking to the free version.
I like the format and the price is reasonable, but I think it should have slightly more content. It's also odd that features like dark mode and save articles for later are missing, basically the free app is far more functional than the paid one.
Focused news. In a world of covid, Trump and a never ending flow of information, Editions is a really good way to get just enough news and interesting reads without having to doom scroll for hours. Layout is clean, content readable. Dark mode would be a huge plus.
It's difficult to cancel the free trial. They don't let you cancel it online and when I emailed to cancel they made me call them. All very time consuming and irritating. I didn't like the way the app looked on my phone at all.
After a terrible, bug-ridden start, his app is pretty well sorted now. Furthermore, the bandwidth required is now quite reasonable. I'd welcome the option to have lower resolution pictures when overseas on a restricted data deal.
I love this App. It comes with my digital subscription. Beautiful to look at. Easy to find your way around. My favourite way of reading the news. The design is great. I dip into the live updates on The Guardian App as this App is updated early in the morning only.
Bit buggy at the minute. It won't open and when it does it asks me to do my touch/face authentication repeatedly. When it works I really like it for at-a-glance information. I just wish I would work properly. -Note 20 Ultra
Downloads not available when offline. I have it set to download last seven days. Whenever I am offline there is nothing to read. When I go back online the supposedly downloaded editions re-appear. Also lots missing and no comments. The web page is best, then the Guardian app, then last by a long way, this.
I found the app to be ok but not what I wanted. When I attempted to cancel my subscription I was told to call their office during business hours to do so! Not at all happy with this, if a subscription is set up online I expect to be able to cancel it on line as well...
Hmm so far so bad. It's great when it's working but the current edition often fails to open. Currently on a 14 day free trial. Have reported the problems and hoping for a fix soon as I really want to support the Guardian.
How do I love this app? Let me count the ways: -Downloads automatically in a few minutes. -Always available with the first cuppa where I live (W. Europe). -Content matches the entire (48+ pages) printed newspaper. -Costs the same as the PDF-ish versions of the Guardian or Guardian Weekly, but cleaner to navigate, no ads. -Nice interface, pleasure to use, good photos, no clutter. -Subscribing removes ads from the Guardian Live app and website. *Only downsides: no bookmarking ability or dark mode.
