New York City: Is aimed at first time visitors with a few days. Everything is filtered by "Must See" leaving you with 37 listings in all of Midtown--including museaums, shopping, restaurants!, architecture. 3 restaurants, 1 museum, 4 hotels , 1 famous building, 1 place to shop. Times sq not listed !! If you turn off Must See filter, Midtown has 37 restaurants total Must tap 3 times to set up. Filter keeps coming back on. All of Midtown is just one neighborhood (Brooklyn is 4). Often if go to different app and come back, have to start from absolute beginning: select New York City, select Places, unselect Must See, ... On map places disappear when you move it (not zoom it) In Places list (long) no scroll bar visible - so keep on scrolling. Has Jumel Terrace because a famous Person of Color lived there but not Times Sq. (Later I did find Times Sq.) A great idea- have all the info of a heavy guidebook available on your phone. Not yet realized. (November 2021, on Pixel 5a, Android 12)
One of the best travel apps out there! Good details about all the places you want to search. The different attractions being listed is of great help. Terrific job from all those who developed and manage this app!!!
Bad app. Useless when traveling. It should have a map like Google maps with all places indicated, filter something and only appear that in the map. The system only allows you to download like cities, but for example when traveling to Bali, we wanted to search places in general, but you can't, you must know in which " city" that place is to find it, and normally you don't know that why you are searching. So the best thing would be to have all places for countries or regions, and have a search box
I love Lonely Planet, so when they came up with the guides it was fantastic, a breath of fresh air to all travellers. The fact that you can download each Individual destination is great, then you can delete it after you've researched or been there. The trips, the restaurant's, the bars, accomodation, sights, just about everything is covered in these apps.
If you're looking for a streamlined way to enjoy a variety of world cities, this is your app. With a solid selection of concise listings for Lonely Planet favorites and the very helpful option to download guides for offline use, you'll never find yourself without something to see, do, or eat. Combine this with Google Trips for a one-two punch of scheduling and user reviews, and you'll find travel has never been so easy.
This app is ok, but I actually found Google Maps to be more helpful in locating things to do and see as I traveled. It does not have guides for many cities, but a simple search in Google Maps for a city, gives you iconic places to visit, hotels, restaurants, transport options, bars, etc. The Lonely Planet magazine is wonderful when you are home & seeking ideas for travel destinations, the app however is not really worth the download.
This was my go-to app for finding things to do in a new city. I travel as part of my work, and this app helped me discover some really cool stuff in every new city I visited. I get it, expert reviews like these cost money. But going from a completely free app to a subscription based service is not the answer. I'm willing to pay a small fee to have access to a city guide (just like purchasing one of the books), but a yearly $40 fee just isn't practical. For now it's back to Google Map reviews.
I'm starting to travel on my own and this app is so incredibly useful! It lists popular places to eat, drink and stay as well as things to do and real genuine reviews of places. There's a downloadable map and lots of travel tips for each individual city. I really love this app and would recommend it to anyone who wants a culturally rich visit to a city!
The update took away access to phrase books that I PAID FOR. Last year I purchased unlimited access to all phrase books for $5.99. I thought I was getting a good deal, but after the update where they switched to a subscription model, I can no longer access them, and it hounds me to subscribe if I try to look at more than 5 page previews. I paid for access to these phrase books, and they took them all away without notice. I will never make a purchase from this company again.
I love this app! I've used Lonely Planet books before and found them useful, and I like that I now have this more convenient option of having many guides on my phone in an easily accessible way. There's one thing that I would find useful though: if I could sort my favourites into categories, for example when I am planning what to do on which day if I don't have much time on my hands and need a well thought out plan. It would be nice if I could use the app for that too (for example: "first day").
Cancelled my subscription ahead of the end date. Every single app allows you to still use the service until the end date... EXCEPT the lonely planet. Cancelled my subscription becausetoo little useful info on cities. An easy Google search provides more info on touristic attractions. Update: after 4 days, the issue is still not resolved. Suggestion was to close app and log out (Wow, didn't think of that myself) The info provided in my first message just gets asked again. AVOID AT ALL COST! SCAM!
Lost all my downloaded maps with the recent update. I am leaving for a trip very soon, had all my maps and plans prepared, and now all the maps are gone. Added 1 month subscription, for recovering the maps. Followed the instructions on how to download my lost maps, but it doesn't work!! No 'download' button preset, even though the instructions said so. Very bad QA Not recommending subscription if offlineaps can't be downloaded Clearing cache didn't help. Reinstalled the app, download works now
When I first downloaded it, the app was free and we booked all our excursions for our trip through it. I recommended the app to anyone that traveled. Now you have to pay a monthly subscription for the app. Doesnt seem worth the price when there are plenty of free apps available that have the same features.
I used to love this app it was so helpful finding new places to go when I traveled in allowing me to bookmark them. So I recently downloaded it again to help plan a trip but to my surprise now you need a paid subscription to access anything. I wish it was a one-time payment but it's either a monthly or yearly subscription which makes it worse.
The app is now not useful at all, since they implemented new ridiculous subscriptions (way overpriced). I'm very disappointed about Lonely Planet. I will not pay that price for subscription, doesn't matter which reason they give. If nothing change I will simply delete the app. We are in 2020, we can find a lot of travel information on the web without having to pay for. It was a great app, before...
Changed to subscription model and I can't subscribe. When I click the subscribe button, app tells me I'm not connected to internet even though I am. Don't like new user interface. Old one was better. More confusing to use now. More buggy now. Seems it was not tested well before new release. I guess LP was in a hurry to collect our $. Too expensive. Uninstalled.
Edited: The new updated app now requires a paid subscription and has way less features and abilities then it used to. Will be uninstalling this app and will have to find a new one for my travels. Unfortunately this went from my go-to to least favorite app real quick. This app is so useful for someone like me who travels with carry on bags and doesn't always have room for the guide books. It is also awesome for helping me plan my own walking tours of a new city while on the go!
great app to have with you on the go, lots of travel destinations included .. maps are useful but limited functionality if you don't have internet. I use it for travel inspiration amd to find must see and must eat at places .. i find making a list of favourite destinations very useful but would better if that list could have a share function so can send it to travel mates
The LP City Guide to Lisbon looks great. There are many suggested places to visit, eat and stay with good descriptions that are mapped out and available offline. A modern approach and I am sure more easily kept up to date, than the LP books I used for my extended wanderings many years ago. Although it is nice that books do not run out of charge!
Unfortunately I feel I must downgrade my 5* review. I used to use this app whenever I went on holiday but recently it has changed to an expensive subscription based service. I wouldn't mind if there was a small fee to download a city guide, however with this subscription system the guide isn't yours to keep. As I am not a frequent traveller, I see little point paying; I could pay for just a month whilst im away, however this doesn't help with prior planning before the trip.
Was very good and I got some use out of it along with other apps such as TripAdvisor and Google travel but unfortunately the developers have followed suit with a lot of others and introduced a ridiculously priced subscription model. I would be happy to pay a once off reasonable fee or a reasonable subscription price but at €45 to effectively rent access to the guide its not practical. Similar information is readily available for free online. Try the Culture Trip app instead.
Unfortunately, can't make this app working and useful. After downloading city and offline map, app is still showing as I'm outside the city. Navigation is impossible, and map itself is not so helpful. Old guide map that I used in 2016. worked flawlessly, I don't understand what is this... Edit: uninstalled it after found it charging for something that's not actually useful. Quite a shame.
Loved and raved about this app when downloaded it. Loved the What's nearby links and fact broken down into categories. Just went on to plan an upcoming trip to a city I've visited many times, wanted to check for events, new bars, etc and have reverted to Google. So disappointed, you've gone backwards
The execution of this app is comically poor. If you click on places of interest or shows you "Tickets and Tours" of highly unrelated things. Instead of being a helpful "guide" this app is pure marketing to get you do sign up for their paid subscription and advertised "tours". You'd be better off doing a little work yourself to plan your trip or hire a service that'll do it for you.
