Hands-On Equations 1

Teach your children the joys of learning algebra with Hands-On Equations 1 – the algebra app for children as young as eight!“...ingenious app...makes it exceptionally easy to learn algebra..."
- Dr. Alex Davidovic, former International Chess MasterAlgebra can be a tricky subject to master but with the help of Hands-On Equations 1, equations such as 4x+2=3x+9 and 2(x+4)+x=x+12 become child’s play![We have discovered a programming error which is being fixed. Occasionally, the app will bring up an equation which cannot be solved. If you use the back arrow, and then the forward arrow, the correct equation will come up. The bug will be fixed as soon as possible.]The app takes advantage of the Android's visual and touch features to demystify complex algebraic concepts. The original Hands-On Equations program, using physical game pieces, has already helped more than a million students gain confidence with algebra. Now that same, proven method is available virtually in the palm of your hand.In Lesson 1, the student mentally tries to figure out the value of the pawn that makes both sides balance by using reasoning or a guess-and-check strategy. The game pieces do not move in this first lesson. In Lesson 2, the student places the game pieces unto the image of the balance scale to represent both sides of the abstract equation. In Lesson 3, the student uses "legal moves" with the pawns to simplify and solve for the unknown X.In Lesson 4,the student learns to use legal moves with the cubes.A video introduction is provided for each lesson. (See sample video at http://youtu.be/ZvFwkDaM4YE.) Each video introduction is followed by two examples and ten exercises.Level I of Hands-On Equations consists of six lessons and one review lesson. The student learns to solve equations such as 8+2x+3-x=2x+1 and 2(2x+1)=3x+8. There are more than 80 equations for the student to enjoy and solve!Hands-On Equations is the ideal first introduction to algebra for elementary and middle school students. Not only will these students have FUN and be fascinated with the program, their sense of self-esteem will be dramatically enhanced as they experience success with sophisticated looking algebraic equations.Older students who need help with algebra will also benefit from Hands-On Equations. These students may, for the first time, understand key concepts of algebra that have held them back. The app is designed to accommodate multiple users while keeping track of the problems solved by each user. .To see a video of a 10-year old solving 4+3x-2x+x=x+5 on the app, go to http://bit.ly/13gaGvWAbout the inventor: Dr. Henry Borenson has taught mathematics to inner-city low achieving students as well as to Math Olympiad students at the Stuyvesant High School in New York City. After receiving a patent for Hands-On Equations, he founded Borenson and Associates to disseminate the Hands-On Equations program and the Making Algebra Child's Play workshop for teachers. The original Hands-On Equations program, using physical game pieces, has already helped more than a million students gain confidence with algebra. Now that same, proven method is available virtually in the palm of your hand.

In Lesson 1, the student mentally tries to figure out the value of the pawn that makes both sides balance by using reasoning or a guess-and-check strategy. The game pieces do not move in this first lesson.

In Lesson 2, the student places the game pieces unto the image of the balance scale to represent both sides of the abstract equation.

I have always been able to do math in my head. It has been 15 years since I have done actual mathematical equations. I had to take an aptitude test for a career opportunity which required me to do algebraic equations in to which I was having a hard time remembering. This is an absolute wonderful way to help refresh your brain on the order of how the equations are to be done and also a fun time while learning. More fun than any game app I have ever played and worth every penny.

At the age of 15 my parent repeated what the maths teacher said to them--your daughter will never be good at maths. Personally I thought algebra, the hardest maths of all, was a strange Klingon-like language which I was too dumb to decipher. When I downloaded this app, I did so with reluctance. But wow, two days later I'm confidentally solving problems and absolutely loving it. The explanations and visuals are soooo logical, even my 15 year old daughter (divine providence) finds it easy. This is why I'm happy to recommend this app to everyone. By the way, I'm 46, so it's not too late to train an old human new tricks.

Great App series, but Level 1 (and only Level 1) currently does not work on latest chromebook version 71. At start, an error box reads "Sorry, this application is not compatible with your device" and then the app shuts down. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

This is, by far, the best app-teaching method I have found next to Kahn Academy. I have gone back to college and had to take an algebra class (all online). This app, along with my professors has helped tremendously it is well worth the money! 👍💯

I failed algebra in school so bad that I was in pre algebra in 12th grade. I recently started school for HVAC at the local college and needed to somehow learn algebra in one day. Seemed impossible. Out of desperation, I looked for an app to maybe teach me what I needed to know. I can't believe after all these years I just needed to be explained algebra this way. This is the greatest app ever invented.

I wrote a comment on the light version for five stars and I'll do the same for this one. Its saturday morning 2020 in the grips of a global pandemic but there is hope, because this awesome app is helping me learn algebra. Honestly if I had access to something like this in high school I'd be a mathematician at this point. Even though it's for the younger generations, its lessons are as effective as the benefit of solving for X. Love this and will yell it as much as possible.

Amazing! I never knew I could understand algebra like this. I'm astonished that I could learn it so fast considering I couldn't do it all all. I'm a visual learner and this method gave me visual steps rather than just remembering rules. Now I see patterns and that is how I work! Thank you so much for this.

I have a Samsung Note9 128g, phone (new as of May 2019) and this App will NOT download!!! I've been trying for 4 days now and nothing!?! What do I need to do? I REALLY enjoyed the "Lite" version and have paid for the version "1"...so either help me or give my money back. FRUSTRATED 😖😠
