Hangouts Chat

Like everyone says,it's good enough but it's intrusive with contacts and not something that works when trying to clean up a long conversation. You can't and the application program fails when you get the message and can't see it in the conversation. No where to clean it up. Then start over. Important conversation becoming junk because you have to delete it and start over. You can't forward it to email for Art or interesting work in progress. I don't think any of them are good though. Just simple

It's worse than Google Hangouts. It's frustrating this app is being pushed when Hangouts was much better for the majority of people. Image sharing is not great (only one image at a time), though Chat is better at sending large files like videos. I can't find read receipts. My hangouts groups turned into Spaces, for some reason. All of the texts appear on the same side, including your own (this is a small thing but really bugs me!). I really like the addition of the file sharing tab, however.

Hangouts was so much better! Text, video calls and audio calls ALL IN ONE. Oh and the ability to actually send more than one thing at a time. Sending pictures and videos now is absolutely atrocious. Having separate apps to do things is utterly ridiculous. Really though, how is having a bazillion different apps to do the job of one functional AND efficient?

I think this app is an ok chatting app. The regular hangouts was way better then this one, and the thing that bothers me the most is that you can't send multiple pictures at one time and if you didn't create the space, then you cant add or remove anybody even if you need to. Maybe make an update or just fix it. Overall I wouldn't use it as much.

There are so many features about hangouts that are missing in chat. I like the name change, but that's about it. I really miss the call and video call features. Sending a link to Google meet doesn't actually call the person, and it means they have to have yet another app on their phone. Waste of storage space. Why the change? Why remove a perfectly good app and then replace it with several less useful apps?

Excellent.. with one major flaw. In chats like WhatsApp, telegram , etc.. you can indicate if your message is a response to a previous text/image. That's the only reason I've not fully migrated to google chats. It's hard to have long conversations without causing confusion or being confusd So please make it possible for us to indicate when a text/ image is a response to a previous text/image.

This app ...works?? You can send messages but can only send pictures one at a time. Also to view the app on my phone (lg G8 thin Q) it requires me to set a lock code and fingerprint. I don't have sensitive information shared on this app but there is no way to change this setting that I can find. I say use it if you have too, don't if you have a choice.

I find it to be muddled down and it has a poor interface with the Google parent app. Not seamless. I infrequently utilized Google Hangouts, but when I did, I never had these types of issues. Like other users have said, the notifications function is broken. Google Chat and Google Hangouts don't communicate and there is no transferability of files or data between the two platforms.

It is often stated that progress requires two steps forward and another step back. The move from Google Hangouts to Google Chat was maybe 5 steps back. Many of the features that were available in hangouts are not even available (or the product is so unintuitive that the features can't be found). The "desktop app" isn't any better either. Terrible move overall.

I dont get todays tech trend. I aint against a revamped, refreshed version of something. But, that being said when the new app cant do all of what the old app does, looks dont make up for it. You can make it look pretty all you want, but that means nothing if it cant perform all of what its replacing can do. I dislike having to use google meets for calls, because thats limited if its the free version. I still prefer hangouts over this. But at least this is a start. Hopefully it improves w/ time

It's an OK messaging app. But it needs to work with Android Auto, at least for notifications. Also I wish the sender text was on the right to make it more easily distinguishable. And this is minor, but I wish I could changes the Tones sound to another one of the sounds they use on the web. Instead it directs you to the general Android sound selection screen which doesn't have the same options.

No Android Auto?! --- To be clear, the app itself is fine. A little clunky when sending photos but manageable. --- But as the primary Google messaging app (since we were pushed to ditch Hangouts last year), it is absurd that Chat is not compatible with Android Auto while Hangouts is. It makes me wonder what else was overlooked during that transition. Please fix this.

I switched to Chat when Google deprecated Hangouts. The cons are, Chat doesn't seem to add shortcuts for your frequent contacts to the "Share" menu, like Hangouts did. If you share stuff a lot, this is a pain because it requires an extra tap. Chat also has a habit of freezing for a moment when you send a link to someone. Irritating. It also sometimes sends duplicate messages upon switching back to the app. On the positive side, you can search chat history (finally!). So that's cool I guess.

it keeps acting as if I'm not connected to the wifi when I am (it's not the signal, every other app works fine), often doesn't show notifications, often won't let me click the notifications it does show, won't send videos and the ones I receive take ages to load, please improve your app, I'm begging, I need it. edit: I've done all those steps and every problem still is there. furthermore, I forgot to add whenever I switch up between accounts the screen goes blank.

Very poor experience after Hangouts. Sometimes i get a notification but cannot view the message, because Chat is so slow at loading it. The images are also sometimes diplayed with half a minute delay. It sends a double set of notifications for each message. It is hard to differentiate who wrote. Every image and video is opened in a new tab, so one cannot view two mages by swiping.

I don't like the fact that you can only send one photo at a times vs hangouts you can send multiple, like up to 10 photos. Also, how come chats doesn't allow you to see when the user was last active? Please add that feature to chats!! History and notifications shouldn't be shown to the other user. Thus far, it is an ok app.

This app is really good on it's own but my only problem is that sometimes I accidentally sent a message to a wrong person and I can't delete it, so if u would add that, it would be really helpful. And a voice message option would be cool too. No it's not mandatory but it would be nice and that's about it. Other then the deleting thing the app is great!

This app still needs some work but it's definitely improved since my last review, gaining a star. You can only attach one photo at a time to send. Contacts in Chat are not connected to the Contact record in the Contacts app. Not doing so means that the Do Not Disturb settings don't work i.e. DND has exceptions for starred contacts. Lastly, videos that are sent can't be downloaded. I'll add an extra star for fixing any one of these.

Notifications are broken and have been for months. My wife and me used hangouts for years and never once had a problem. Chat notifications are about a 60% chance of showing up, even after upgrading phones. If it persists we will be looking for a different chatting solution. App is otherwise great. Notifications not reliably showing up is a deal breaker. On a Google Pixel 6 right now

I love this APP! The only thing missing is the ability to send GIF's . Also I can't delete individual mesaages. If I want to delete something I need to delete the entire conversation, losing the photos and videos sent.I realize that's not important, but it would really be fun to be able to send GIF's like I can with my Go-to messenger app "Facebook Messenger". When this APP has the capability and ease of use that Facebook messenger has I'll give it 5 stars instead of 4.

Please add option to send multiple pictures and videos at once. Sending 1 at a time is very inefficient. Pictures shared in chats don't show up in shared files tab. Please allow all files sent in the chat to be visible and searchable under the Files tab. Hangouts had this feature for seeing all of the pictures and videos that were ever sent in a chat. Please add this feature. Please integrate the video chat function into the app. Needing to use a Meet link is inefficient. Hangouts had it right.

Google hangouts was actually good, but this replaced it and this isn't very good in comparison. The main thing I miss is seeing when/if the other people in the chat have looked at, or are looking at the chat. The general UI could be a bit better too. I want Hangouts back but if you could make google chat identical or better that would be very nice. On top of that, I have one extra request: customizing the theme colors.

EDIT 5/13/2022: Back again. Thought I'd try Chat out again to see if there were any changes..... That was a fat no. Refer to my review below. Still the same. --------------------- Made the switch from hangouts. Horrible app. No features exist. No customization. No SMS. No stickers. Can't send multiple pictures at once. List goes on. Why makes users switch to an app that doesn't have any of the features the original had. Have to use 5 apps. Uninstalling and using my phone's stock app. Ridiculous.

I really don't like this app because you cant make or recieve phone calls and you have to go through a ehole mess of channels just to save a picture. Honestly, I'd rather use Hangouts because, at least I know I cant receive phone calls and video calls. And if i need to use another email address, it is easier to switch. I can't get Google chat to work, so I guess I'll have to delete it.

Not an acceptable replacement for Hangouts! My messages should be on the right while the people I'm chatting with should be on the left. Interface to attach a picture is needlessly difficult and only one picture can be sent at a time. Hangouts with SMS integration was the perfect messenger app. It was the perfect Android version of iMessages and Google destroyed it. Why???

Promising but disappointing. The only plus it has is the ability to search for your past conversations- though the UI needs work too. Cons: File sending- It is weird how you can only choose one photo/file to send at a time when clicking on the + button at the bottom left User Interface- despite this being a new app, it doesn't really compete well with all the different types of messaging apps in terms of style and looks. No "Dark mode" available- The white screen can tire a user out after time.

Notifications stopped working. Allo was better then this. Back to hangouts until we are forced to uninstall. Update 2022 Still not a fan. Attaching photos defaults to the default file manager and not Google photos, you can only attached one photo per message, notifications are still broken, no duo or Google meet integration. Another day one Android user still disappointed with messaging.

Super replacement for google hangout, bit what's the point? There's a messages app, then hangout and now google chat. This app doesn't have calling feature like does google hangout, overall it's sort of messed up. The hangout allowed for multiple images and videos to be sent in one go, but the google chat and hangout embedded in email will allow only one image to be sent at a time? Why? Whereas the messages app will allow multiple to be sent at the same time! Gawd, I gave 4 * now I'll make it 2

The app notifications are all on, but nice ghost removal of my last review. This app is not working and you try to hide it. I just can't use this unreliable app anymore. Notifications randomly do not show up until the app is opened and then an email will be sent right then about conversations I've missed even though I'm in the app now. The one thing that cannot fail is notifications. Time for something else...
