The "Kauai revealed" book is great, but the corresponding app is almost useless. First of all it's super slow, there's always a delay of multiple seconds regardless what you do which is really annoying. Second, the app doesn't provide much up-to-date info which is exactly what you are supposed to pay for (subscription). E.g., trails in good condition are described as adventures (Airplane trail) while other trails that barely exist anymore are described as normal hiking trails (last part of Okolehao trail), and the road to the "Jungle hike" was impassable since long ago (we found out the hard way...). Also, I missed some filtering options in the map view, e.g. showing only the real gems near you. Without that it's often faster and easier to read the book or use Google Maps than navigate through the app (given how slow the app is...). I also ran into multiple crashes and freezes. So I don't see any good reason to buy the app, given that $7.99 ist pretty expensive for an app. For trail maps you better get OsmAnd instead which is free, includes much more details like height lines and is more reliable.
Excellent. Hawaii Revealed was always, in my opinion, the most useful and honest series of guides to the islands. They have done a great job over the years of implementing new technology as it has come in line, and with this new version they have hit it out of the park. It is especially helpful that all of the info, while responsive to GPS, is available without being online, as internet coverage can be spotty.
This app is disappointing. I downloaded Kauai Revealed a few years ago, and it was great. It was a different app then, it was separate apps for each island. Now, it is one app for all of the island, then you purchase the info for each island. The app has over doubled in price in 4 years and has gotten worse. Among other problems the constantly restarts and makes you start the search again. Definitely isn't worth the cost for this app. Save yourself the money and find a better app.
This is the finest example I've ever seen of integration between current topographical maps, active GPS, photography, and comprehensive updated commentary. I've been deep into mountaineering and software since the 70's, and this may be the best user-facing app I've seen since the advent of spreadsheets or web browsers. I used the paperback of Big Island Revealed in 2006 and was impressed by its utility & accuracy. Its transformation into an app is a credit to the author's tenacity and vision.
if in general you don't like guides, you will like this one, if you do like them, you will like it even more. It is very thorough, well organized and useful for tourists of every age and style. warns you about tourist traps and similar, gives you an idea of the prices and tries to be as accurate as possible. For me the best feature is that he has a lot of good tips for adventurous hikes and tells you what you better do and not do, and they gps-ed all the strangest trails. I haven't tested this last feature yet but I will today
I bought the 29.99 combo pack. I can't get Oahu to download which is one of the two islands we are visiting this trip. Love the books. Super disappointed about the app. I'd like a refund if it won't work, I would have spent half the price and just purchased the one island if I had known there's was an issue, and based on previous reviews it looks like you've known for a bit.
Dont buy if you have the book! If you dont have the book this is very good info. I have an old copy of the book and thought that this would be more current. It is NOT. i was disappointed to see any price was outdated and some if the operators listed could no longer perform the reviewed tours because of changes in local rules. They bragged that the app would be up to date but it is about as up to date as my ten year old book. They trap you in an insecure browser if you want to visit web from app
after paying for a year subscription I am unable to download all of the islands. it freezes and will not move forward. I have deleted the app, closed everything running in the background but still no luck once re-installed. Apparently this has been mentioned before as an issue but the resolution they suggest does not work.
This and the individual island apps are great, but it is a little confusing when you have a single island app, then add Hawaii Revealed with all the islands, especially when it comes to automatic renewals. Make absolutely sure the 'auto renew' options in your Google Play account are correct. Google Play will usually refund a mistake charge if you notify them within 48 hrs. Also, since choosing not to renew, most of the things I looked at originally in my Kauai Revealed app is no longer available unless I re-subscribe. Would have been nice to hold onto that. Not much changes very fast on Kauai. Anyway, it's fun, informative and the interactive map is very cool. Probably a good deal if you are taking a once-in-a-lifetime trip, but if you go every year to the same spots on the same island, perhaps the old beat up copy of the 'Revealed' book that is in every condo's book collection will be enough. Have fun and Aloha!
good apps. could be better if it directly interacted with Google maps sooner in the various screens you have to toggle through. sometimes it is hard to toggle through the sections and get to the directions link. also it would be great if you could just see the sections of the app you purchased rather than the whole app.
I had to pay 17(ish), not including tax, for an app that freezes every time I attempt to use it. I bought the book 2 days ago, and I was excited to use the map feature and get some more in depth restaurant reviews. So far, both are impossible due to the app freezing. Please fix!
Usually you go through so many websites just to book your hotel, figure out how to get around, find out all the top sights and so on but this app had all of that! More apps should get on board and include all the information you need to travel in one place so you don't have to struggle. Great app!
This is an edit from my original review. I am a repeat visitor to Maui, visiting six years in a row now and nine in total. I loved the Maui Revealed book and was excited when I found out there was an app. In my original review, I wasn't big on the free version of the app and was struggling with paying an annual subscription to use over what was realistically three or four weeks a year. However, I decided to subscribe to give it a try and found the portability of the app useful. I'll continue to give it a go for the year and will review again. In the off-season, the app should be a useful supplement to my own experiences for providing friends and family who are considering a trip to Maui with information and recommendations, and will point them to the app should they wish to purchase for their trip.
Received a response, uninstalled, reinstalled, restored. All seems to be working now. Upgraded my rating. Purchased app, but the app continues to tell me that I have to purchase the app to access many sections. Tried to send a comment through their internal system, which did not work.
The previous apps were amazing and under $10. The new app is horrible and $25 annualy, per island! As someone who has had all the books and apps, this is a major letdown. There are better apps for cheaper, unfortunately I'll be going that direction in the future.
Just downloaded the app on my android but can't even get past the screen asking me to set up an account; it says "Invalid Email Address". I've tried putting in several of my emails but no go. What good is an app that doesn't let you set up an account?
I was excited to try the app out. In the app description it says $7.99 a year but after you take the time to download it (and it takes a while) it says its $17.99. Thats click bait, they need to fix that. Besides them lying about the price, its too much. I can't spend $18 on something that I dont even know if I will like or use. Its too bad they have to charge so much.
The directions are so thorough. You'll always find the best scenic drives and hole in the wall restaurants that will make your trip unforgettable. The maps lead me straight to where I wanted to go with exact instructions! My trip wouldn't have been half as good without them.
I can't believe you have stuff on other islands too! Just looking through Maui was crazy because of all the chapters on activities and beaches and sights! And I was able to see where they all were right on the map too. Super cool app, and a must-have when traveling.
I can't get the app to download anything. Purchased the all the island for $29.99, froze on download. Un-installed it and reinstalled it and now it is telling me I don't have a subscription anymore, even though they already charged me the $29.99. Super frustrating!!!!
I couldn't believe how much information was in the app! I got the app on a recommendation from my colleague and thought there was no way it would be as good as the books but I was wrong. I also appreciated the alerts letting me know right when things happened on the island. It was easy to move on to something else since we had just about everything on our list! I can't thank the team enough for all they've done.
Not as user friendly and efficient as once was. As I recall you use to mark favorites with a heart and could actually map out your stops. Now it is a pain and I find I need to make notes outside of the app to plan the day.
I love the book so when learned of App, I installed the free trial but was unable to try out any of the parts i was thinking i might use. Discovered it kept running in background. Used 2GB in a week of my data while not using features. Took about an hour to figure out how to uninstall it, wasted Hawaii time. Will be checking if i got charged for buying it accidentally.
the guide book is great, but this app is poorly designed, the geo features only work intermittently. I'd rather have the paper version (had an older edition, it waa fabulous).
Love the content in the app and was very useful during our trip. There were a few times 'Directions' didn't work; not sure if there was an issue with the app or my phone. Also, I really miss the 'Nearby' feature. The new way 'Nearby' works now is not intuitive and requires too many clicks. I would have given the app 5 stars except for these two issues. Nonetheless, the app is very beneficial when traveling in Hawaii. I wish the same content is available for other destinations.
