Hawaii Volcanoes Driving Tour

Greatest app I've ever downloaded! My wife and I had started our honeymoon and heard about the app from some others. After a few minutes figuring out the interface it worked perfectly. "Mr. Shaka" as my wife dubbed him was an amazing guide and felt like he was in the car with is the whole time! From stunning beaches to beautiful mountains they had a story and history for everything, not to mention the perfect music. 100% recommend this app and cannot wait to use it on the other isles!

So worth it! I'm glad a colleague recommended this app, saved me hundreds of dollars! Why join a $$$ tour if you could just rent a car and have this app. So useful, the stops were accurate and the history and stories were fun and educational too. Highly recommend!

Amazing use of technology! This app was one of the best parts of our trip to the big island. If there were more than 5 stars you would get it. I can't recommend this app enough to those that like to see a lot but move at your own pace.

This was seriously the best. Especially the volcano national park guide. There is no reason to ever pay for a tour again with these shaka self guided tours. Edit: We bought all the Kauai tours as well. They were equally amazing. App is very intuitive. 5 stars for all.

Do NOT travel the islands without the Shaka guide. Hands down the best app downloaded for touring the island...in real time! We actually just stayed connected via Bluetooth and it worked great. Download the tours ahead of time so you don't chance not having service in areas that require it while touring. Educational, entertaining, funny(subjectively, of course), great narrator voice. Shaka Guide for the win!

Must have BOTH GPS SIGNAL AND WIFI/INTERNET at the SAME TIME to start a tour!!!!!!!!!!! As such you can't start it in the car without internet and can't start it in your room without a GPS signal. We had a half day of touring without this app again today as i discover these issues. Should provide a notice to this effect every time the app is started!!!!!

Your essential car companion! We've used Shaka guide before, so we bought the whole Big Island package as soon as we arrived. Just love the whole combination of history, legend, driving directions and tips. We feel like we have learnt so much with Shaka, and managed to fit in a lot more than if we were going it alone. Our daughter and son in law were sceptical at first but soon became big Shaka converts. "Cool, eh?".

Absolutely love this app. We used it for the big island and it works great! The amount of information is amazing. It is a fun way to learn and explore the many regions of the island. It definitely makes some of the driving pass by quickly. Kudos to the developer and the talent. Really fun and we learned a lot. Mahalo!

The Shaka experience is second to none. It adds a massive layer of interest to any driving adventure! I wish there was a Shaka tour EVERYWHERE!! It's fantastic!!

I got the Big Island Guide. The tours made the drive so much more fun and alive. Learned a lot about the island's history, too. I would totally recommend this to anyone who likes to explore the islands.

It can be a little difficult to get connected through your radio, make sure you have the correct USB cord, if you're not an IT person. Otherwise it's a wonderful app

Great app with bunch of useful and also interesting information. We loved the stories and the sightseeing!

My only problem with this guide is it unidirectional. When you're following the tour path, it's great! But if you're going in the opposite direction, it's so annoying to manually trigger the items. Be aware- directions are not provided at every single turn. A navigator is still needed in the vehicle.

This guide literally made my trip to the Big Island one of my FAV travel experiences. I can't wait to try the UT tours

The app itself is a bit clunky - it is not very useful as navigation tool (only shows top-down map view), so if your phone is doubling up as a navigator, you'll have to fiddle around. Also, it wouldn't often start if you don't have signal (even if you've downloaded for offline use). Other than that - it's a great tour, very informative. If only, it warns you one times too many of the many interesting places where your rental company doesn't allow you to take your rental car :)

So far it's been very useful. On my wish list would be to have the route work on Android Auto, and that the narration didn't use "left" or "right"... Or was aware of the direction you're heading. Example we're following the South Island Epic tour, which says to get into right lane and take a right, but it's actually the center lane and a left. Happened a few times, I imagine it's because the tour can be taken in either direction and if the GPS is just a little off it says it wrong. Great app!!

Love this app. I recommend buying the full package of all the tours because you never know where else you want to explore on the island. Some of the pieces of the separate tours connect and overlap a bit. For that reason, the only improvement I would suggest is that all five tours be combined in a single mega-tour if you buy the full package. That way a person could just wander wherever they want and it would automatically speak to them wherever they go. I found myself switching between tours.

This was a great way to see different parts of the big island. We used it for the volcanoes national park - it was extremely helpful with making sure we didn't miss turns and keeping us entertained. Also provided how much time a hike would take if we chose to do it. We couldn't get the sound to play through the car audio, but just using speaker on phone was adequate. Make sure to do the preliminary checks before you start the guide.
