Hearkenwold (IceBlink RPG)

Hearkenwold (an IceBlink Engine RPG)
Story and Turn-based role playing game (RPG) implementing a classic old-school computer RPG style.

Story by DorateenCoding and some artwork by slowdive_fanIceBlink Engine and port to Android by slowdive_fan (aka me)

This is a conversion of Dorateen's excellent module, Hearkenwold, from the PC version of IceBlink to the Android version of IceBlink. As Dorateen continues to update the PC version with more content, I will update the android version as well. At this point, the android version is all caught up with the content in the currently released PC version...Dorateen is still adding more content to the PC version :-)

WARNING: SAVE OFTEN! This adventure by Dorateen is very old school. There are a number of encounters that are possible early on that a poorly equipped and under skilled party will find very difficult, even near impossible. It is a risk reward kind of thing. A party size of six will be helpful. If an NPC gives you a warning, be careful. Sometimes, there is no warning if you wander from the path too much. Yet exploring in this module often yields nice treats... decisions, decisions. SAVE OFTEN!!

Here is Dorateen's description:"This is a work-in-progress demo of Hearkenwold. A classic party-based adventure heavily inspired by the SSI Gold Box games, and in fact uses art assets (sprites and some tiles) from the Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures archives. This campaign takes advantage of the IceBlink engine's turn-based combat system and branching conversations, including "Party Chat" style dialogues where options are available to characters in the party, according to various conditionals such as class, race, and ability scores.

The adventure begins with the party fleeing an attack on a feudal manor, and seeking refuge in Castle Hearkenwold. From there, they can be enlisted into service of the Kingdom, or try to explore on their own. Eventually this will be an open world sandbox style campaign. For now, there are areas partially filled with content that exists around a more structured quest line. This demo can be considered to contain the first two "chapters" of the story, although more is being updated and expanded.

While not set in a specific world setting, Hearkenwold does draw upon the Dungeons & Dragons experience, with the aspiration of creating a pen and paper, rather than cinematic, type feel."

Features:
- NO ads or in-app stuff.
- turn-based combat similar in style to the SSI Gold Box games.
- great RPG story telling conversation system.

Progress Reporting Feature:A fun new way to share your play through experience with others. There is a toggle button on the main map screen labeled "PR" (bottom right toggle button). Pressing this button will turn Progress Reporting on and off. If you do not wish to share your play through experience, no problem, just turn off Progress Reporting. If you do wish to share, leave the "PR" button on. If Progress Reporting is on, then at a number of milestone events, it will send your party's current stats to our Google Analytics Dashboard. I will post the listings of Progress Reports to our forums (see our website link below) for others to share in the experience. No personally identifiable information is collected, just information about your party. The tag that will separate your Progress Report from others is your main PC's name. We are excited to see how others are enjoying our adventure stories so we hope you enjoy this new feature as well. I'd like to add a few different threads for full party, duo, and solo run play throughs.

The IceBlink Engine is inspired by some of my favorite cRPGs (many being old retro style RPGs) such as the SSI Gold Box Games, original Bard's Tale, Ultima, and the Infinity Engine games (like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale) and my 6+ years of experience with building adventure modules in Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2.

How do I know if I have completed everything in Chapter 1 - I can't seem to do anything more after I'm told to go back to the Manor (or I just can't find the manor)? And how do I get Ch 2 and 3 - I read the description but can't figure it out from there. Thanks - otherwise great game!

Fun concept (though a cheap copy of d&d), my main grip is the controls are tough/slow & you die too easy.

Nice try for a free game. has potential, but too many bugs still. Will be good when finished.

The story is great, you have a nice sense of progression, the world and the monsters are very well crafted. Only problems i have: quest log not really working ans the game is too short. Because of the reasons above and the fact that it costs 0$ AND it does not annoy you with adds i give it a well deserved 5 stars

I really enjoyed playing through the story and starting to explore so much that I was almost getting lost. It took me two attempts because my first party sucked but that was all part of the game. It was very frustrating at the end to not be told that I'd completed all of the current content. I wasn't aware it was a work in progress and ran around for hours at the end trying to figure out what was next.

As the developer mentions, this is not a finished game. Keeping that in mind, this is the best of the games I have played on the IceBlink engine. Multiple characters, towns, enemies, dungeons; you play with what you create. There are some alternate paths to the same goals. When finished this would definitely be worth some money, try it now while it is still free.

When I try to run this app, the screen turns white for a few seconds, then Android gives me a "stopped unexpectedly" error. It doesn't even make it to the starting menu. I have run other IceBlink games without this problem, and the issue has persisted through both reboots and the removal and re-installation of the app. I'm running Android 4.2.1 on an Asus ME301T tablet.

This game has a lot going for it, but at it's current state it doesn't seem to function too well. Quests don't seem to activate in the log save for the initial quest that is given to you. Paths that lead to invisible walls that are clearly meant to be an area transition, doors that don't do anything, inconsisten sprite art, and no map are some of the issues that the game currently has but will probably be fixed some time later.

Fun game but as has been said some quests are bugged. Don't read past this if you don't want some minor spoilers. The quest for the instruments, no way I could find to try and get to the torch by the abbot, abbot says nothing when you return after talking to the father, and can't find the 2 trolls for the troll king or try and kill him for the bugbears.

Hard dm. These 1st level characters are made of jello. I roll better than chance in real life (micro tk. Look it up) but that aint your fault. Still its hard to enjoy. Seems like lowly goblins have better starting equipment. I guess I could start with more fighters but should i have to? As always the low level spell casters are pretty much worthless. If your gonna go tsr than go all the way with a thac0 and a less is more ac. Otherwize we need some more starting spells or some monsters with shoddier equipment off the bat. I thank you for your efforts though. Better than any phone game i have the skills to create. Plus the npcs are well written. I may keep toying with this a bit but it feels too much like ssr dragon lance and not enough like gateway to the savage frontier. Play the two for an hour each (dosbox) then get back to me.

Fun fun game. But there's a bug after you do the instruments quest and you goto back to the bars and tell her the instruments belong to someone else and she gives them up instead of paying the 1000g for them you can keep doing that quest for 10 exp over and over I leveled up my guys 3 levels non stop there... lol I can't find the trolls I need to get the crown. There's also a cave I can not go into by the tavern. But great game so far

Fun game! I play TTRPG's, and this one is simple enough for smartphone, and is designed well. Once you get over the level 1 hump, it becomes pretty easy. I wish there were more spells to choose from! And I wish I could fight Rorn! Bug+SPOILERS: The djinni cavern- I walk out the cave entrance and the djinn is released from the lamp. I chose experience, and I got it, but afterwards, I could no longer leave the cave. I could move onto the square, but it wouldn't move into a new map. I had to start a new game.

Hearkenworld is an amazing homage to it's retro roots. From the character creation/party creation through the graphics and turn based battles right down to and past the user interface which unfortunately harkens the old school genre so well that it is at times not entirely user friendly. Aside from that it is a fantastic game... very accurate to genre and very enjoyable. This is why I've rated it so well. Great job dev(s), thank you for making this!

More open-ended and less story-driven than Bree Arts' other entries, this game has a very similar feel to Spidersoft's "Exile" trilogy for early Windows. Very fun story-light party-based RPG.

Exactly what i was hoping it would be. Haven't played it much but had fun so far. Especially like the fact that you can create your entire squad right away

This is a great style of game for fantasy role players and adventure seekers. It reminds me of pool of radiance in the combat sense. It seems a little buggy and incomplete but still gave it 5 stars for the challenge and hopefully the cliffhanger. I've heard we might see more of this awesome game in the future. Will it still be free?
