Heroes of Myth

Everyone thinks you saved the world three years ago. It was all a lie. The truth is, the "dark lord" you and your friends supposedly slew never existed; you used magical illusions to fake a prophecy. But now, as you relax into a life of fame and luxury, the omens from your false prophecy are happening again, and this time, you had nothing to do with it.

"Heroes of Myth" is a 560,000-word interactive novel by Abigail C. Trevor, where your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

Naturally, everyone expects you to save the world again, but you're just an illusionist, and your friends have scattered to the winds. Will you become the hero all the songs say you are, or find new ways to fool them all again? How far will you go to protect your friends' secrets--or are there stronger alliances to be made by betraying their trust?

This is the trouble with pretending you're a hero: occasionally you have to become one. Craft clever illusions, charm suspicious royals, and face shadowy demons from beyond your realm. In the end, is the story you told worth more to you, or to the legions of people who believed it?

• Play as male, female, or non-binary; gay, straight or bisexual; monogamous or poly; asexual, and/or aromantic
• Intercept messages, stage scandals, and guide your preferred ruler to the throne
• Romance a prince, a bard, a long-lost friend, a false prophet, or a visitor from realms beyond
• Defend castles, villages, and your own mind from demonic assault
• Help your friends protect their positions, or sacrifice them in the name of the truth
• Triumph in a tournament of the greatest mages from across the land
• Slay a centuries-old monster—or swear yourself to his cause

Are you a hero, a liar, or both?

Got to the pay wall on tablet. Purchased game on phone. To go further in the game on the tablet, it is still forcing me to purchase the game once again. Never had this happen on any book, game, and software before with everything always syncing between devices. (Email sent as well.) TLDR: Not happy being stuck on pay wall page on tablet after paying for it on phone device. 😞 ETA: After clearing the data & cache and uninstalling the game, it "upgraded" on the tablet, but lost my progress.

The story had a great potential, but it was not as well presented as it could have been in my opinion. The whole game felt a bit too chaotic, and it seemed like the author wanted to make use of all the tools at his/her disposal (e.g. by introducing every gender and personality imaginable, or making the consequences of the player's decisions as intervowen as possible, often without justification). I'm looking forward to reading a more polished version of the game in the near future.

I've played almost all the cog games, and this is one of the best yet. Great writing, lots of choice, and quite long. My only critique is that I wish there was more opportunities to interact with the other characters. The interactions that are there are very good and unique, but you can only interact with one character during each story lull so you wind up full committing to one companion per playthrough and ignoring all the other companions, which is a shame because all of them are fantastic.

great story and choices I'd definitely suggest giving it a read however I had multiple problems with the interactions on my device. when scrolling some choices would automatically be chosen even without selecting next. same for just tapping a choice. only other thing I would really suggest is perhaps a way to save or reload checkpoint. wanted/ had to restart multiple times to get the first blind playground of what I wanted. could just be my device but definitely an improvement to look into.

Very good writing, though more than once I selected a decision I didn't want - there seems to be a gesture that bypasses the confirmation button by swiping left, and it's very frustrating that it is so easy to do accidentally while scrolling down, with no way of undoing or even seeing what option it was.

A master lass in the choose your own adventure style of game, complete with a LOT of actual writing. I haven't felt as full, satisfied and drawn into a CoG title in years. The world is amazingly accessible and robust, with a definitive style to it that's easy to grasp, and the presence of hard written LGBT characters was awesome. Being able to actually change a companion's opinions in the end and convince them to see your way and still get a happy ending? So, so, so satisfying. I adore Verity!

THIS IS GOLD AMONG CHOICE GAMES! Very well written, unique plot unlike your generic "let's become a mighty knight/mage to save the world from demons" type of story, and packed with interesting, well-developed characters. Seriously, it's rare to see characters so fleshed out and well written in this type of choice game, but this one nailed it! Totally worth the price for its narrative quality, length, and variations. Tips when playing: stick to one goal and to one love interest.

I have been playing these interactive books for about a month now. This is one of the first ones i came across bit i didn't wanna pay. So i paid for cheaper ones for a while but i came back. BEST BOOK SO FAR!! Totally worth the money. Probably the longest book ive read in my time using these and truly a great plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. WELL DONE

A wonderful 1st 4 chapters until a paywall--enough to show the value and tone of what to expect in writing, and this game/narrative is very well written as well as comfortably inclusive with its perspective and depth of detail. There is more than enough in game to balance nuance and quality that the content remains very well done when you get to the end. It's also my first buy of these types of things. Reminded me of great CYOA games but with a more modern depth of insight. Ed: Recommended buy!

I'll admit, in the beginning stages of the game I became frustrated with my inability to take swift action against some characters in the way. It is possible that for someone who would play this game as I do, they'd feel frustrated and be inclined to give it the boot prematurely but I must say in the end it all turned out a deeply satisfying story.

The story is very good, with good writing and very interesting characters. Only problem I had with this game is all the gender neutral pronouns(had to google it, didn't even know it's a thing). It is very confusing for a non first language speaker to see "they" and "them" used to refer to a single person, and this really destroys the otherwise near-perfect narration (for me at least). Please do not allow your political stance to ruin your storytelling.

One of the longest and best ive played. Yeah, it is a little pricey, but overall it has pretty high replayability, good characters, and it is long. Good story and interesting world also.

Very Fun I play a lot of these games and this is one of the best yet. Very long and for once I feel like it has a great replay value. It is intriguing and the story is always interesting. I really enjoyed the characters they all seemed very fleshed out, as did the universe. However, I never got lost in the myth. I highly recommend the game!

I enjoyed the story. It's a super interesting and unique take on the power of prophecies. I also appreciated the normalcy of having so many LGBT characters. One critique is (SPOILER ALERT) the way you, at the very end of the game, have to make a choice or else your magic is taken away. The choices were all incredibly vague, particularly being a hero of both worlds and the truth. And while the epilogue is extensive, nobody asks if you're ok , or how you feel with your magic gone.

Good so far. Actually a lot better than good. Its excellent worth every penny and this is just from one play through. Its really satisfying to see your decisions and actions accounted for throughout the story. One of the longer choice of games but that's a good thing in this case cause you can't get enough of it

Great story, wonderful characters, and situations which rely on the stats you've built to succeed, so you're in control. One of the gems for sure.

Wow! What an absolutely phenomenal game book this is. Truly remarkable. I have played hundreds of these types of games, and this one is by far one of the best I have played. I will be doing a few playthroughs of this as I feel the different choices could make this a whole new story too. I truly hope this author writes more of these books. Such a talent.

Very good game! There needs to be a way you can remake a choice without having to start the entire game again. Even if it was just restarting from the beginning of the current chapter.

Among the very best CoG has to offer. Lengthy and offering seemingly endless choices, endings, and ways to play, with wonderful characters and fantastic unexpected twists.

I will not lie to you. I lost all fait in COC when they went full SJW (In the wrong way) with their editorial. And a lot of literal trash came out. But this COC went back to the core essence. The game manages to have the LGTBI representation we need, but its not ABOUT IT. The characters dont seem artificial and their genders and sexuality doesnt define them. The characters are unique, original, well written. Your choices MATTERS A LOT and the plot is simply fantastic. A must read.

Wow, that was amazing. It reads like an experience, you feel like there are consequences. At one point I made a 'mistake' and a lot of people died... and I felt guilty. No book has ever made me feel guilty before, because by and large they're passive experiences. This was amazing.

Lie, lie, lie, until it turns into the truth and you attain godlike powers! Cracking story, well-conceived characters with good arcs, interesting tensions and trade-offs. Best CoG I've read so far this year.

after a long long time I got to enjoy one of the best COG can offer. I was really disappointed with previous few games that I even stopped playing them altogether. Now my faith is restored and I am once again a full fledged cyoa player once again
