Hive with AI (board game)

Hive is a board game from John Yianni with a difference. There is no board! The pieces are added to the playing area thus creating the board. As more and more pieces are added the game becomes a fight to see who can be the first to capture the opposing Queen Bee.

The soldier ants battle to keep control of the outside of the hive, whilst the Beetles climb up to dominate the top. Spiders moving into holding positions as the Grass Hoppers jump in for the kill. Keeping one eye on the hive and the other on your opponents reserves, the tension builds as one wrong move will see your Queen Bee quickly engulfed... game over!

Fairly decent app. Was working fine for a while but now when I tap a second time to confirm a move in multi player the bug disappears or moves back to where it started then if I close the table and come back it looks right. Would be great if that was fixed. Also I've had issues where is like "your on the same IP and you can't play" with a friend when we clearly were not on the same IP which is pretty annoying.

So very glad I came across this nice strategy game. Free to download, then not a single ad. The easy to understand tutorial (whether you are unfamiliar with the original tabletop version and its offbeat concept, or simply need a refresher) will quickly get you up to speed. Then, once you begin to grasp the subtleties of play, the strength of your AI opponent can be adjusted. Also possible to play a live opponent face to face by device sharing. Well designed & no negatives yet. Download it!

The app plays very well most of the time and is a good place to play hive. I do find that on certain games the ai will just intentionally lose by dropping all their pieces in a straight line but otherwise the game works great. I personally find it a little frustrating that the expansion pieces all cost money and are sold separately for more than I think is justified but the actual game runs well and I think the app itself is well designed and very functional.

I accidentally uninstalled an old version of this game that I bought years ago with a very beautiful music and click sound with each move. I tried to find that version again but couldn't. Now this version is free but I really miss the music and the click sounds. Also with the other paid one I could play with anyone that is sitting at the table in front of me. I wonder how I can get that old version again that I paid money for years ago. Really love this game. I named it children chess. :D

The Pillbug sometimes cheats by moving one piece repeatedly after has moved it the turn prior (please fix fundemental logic). Master bot is challenging, but eventually it becomes easy to beat (I understand there are very few AI's available to play against, so with that being said... Congrats! Will change to 5 star once the pillbug is fixed.

Fun game. Good strategy game, fairly quick. No human vs human(hint, hint). UI recommendation - put the controls and buttons at the bottom so they are easier to reach on a tall phone, respond human or AI won not white/black.

Simple example of the game - no whizzy graphics, which is excellent!!

Great way to learn Hive! My only complaint is whenever I try to adjust board size or mo e the board it immediately pops up messages, which of a bit annoying. Also, cannot connect to BGA from within game

You get to play Hive for free with no ads. Can't complain

Just started playing this game, absolutely loved it. Interface of the game also looks amazing

This was actually my introduction to Hive, I randomly found it in the play store and it looked interesting. If you haven't heard of hive or have never played it, you should. I've had such a fun time with it, you won't regret it.

The AI is decent, pretty intuitive, but sometimes a little finicky. BGA as the multiplayer backbone is completely unintuitive, but that's a BGA problem, not a Hive problem. The expansions are overpriced. Should be a dollar each or at least have a discounted PLM complete option. Not sure if there is two-player. If there is, I can't find it. If there isn't, that makes no sense.

So far it's pretty good. I'm a little disappointed that I have to pay for the expansion pieces. I feel as though the beginner and easy modes are too easy, and the medium difficulty is a little too hard so far. Its not a terrible thing tho, like anything practice, practice, practice. It's a great way to learn strategies to implement when playing real people and the AI in the app. Graphics are as good as they need to be I guess. I think the explanation of the rules are well done on the app also.

Exactly the same as the board game. Simple controls, great tutorials and no ads. The monetization is very reasonable, the 3 expansion pieces are $2 each. These pieces add a lot to the game, but it's still very fun without them. The AI is totally competent on normal. I haven't tried online play quite yet so I'm not sure how that performs, but it's worth a download whether you've played the board game or not before.

A wonderful game and app. But I had a bad experience when a game was cancelled because the app is apparently missing autosave after every turn. Thus when I had to check something, the OS unloaded the app from memory on the background and the game was lost. I would also like that a click on an already selected piece DESELECTS it. Right now I have to click outside play area which is counter-intuitive. I will fix this review and buy an extension when the author addresses the issues.

The AI is fun and this is definitely the board game i enjoy, though the app itself has a few bugs. Off the top of my head, it inconsistently uses the background I have set depending on if I am coming from an online game, and it always makes me login (it remembers credentials). The chat is easy to miss (it would be nice to notify on messages). It would be nice if it was FOSS like LiChess, it would be nice to be able to contribute back! If you already like hive this is definitely the app to use.

Great implementation, great gameplay and an excellent way to learn the game or hone your skills. AI seems solid and the game plays quite well. Pricing for the expansion pieces are pretty up there IMO (roughly $8 CAD for the lot) so it'd be nice if this had a more reasonable purchase price for the expansions or a discounted price for purchasing all at once. (Edited pricing info and initial star rating as I was mistaken about expansion costs at first)

Great game, but loses connection online mid-game a lot even on great wifi. It will rubber band lag and revert your move and come up with an error in the middle of a tournament. I tried refreshing after, but sometimes it continues over and over again. To the point where i just give up playing it. Its very fun to play, but i mostly stop playing it from frustration of errors than anything else. It would be nice to make custom game times as well or watch current games of tournaments, etc.

The problem noted in my previous review seems to have resolved since I reset the statistics. This seems a fine version of the table game so far. I've only played up to medium AI difficulty and haven't played online or pass-and-play. Some animation of the pieces moving would help my slow brain comprehend the AI's moves better, though: I find the instant moves to be a bit difficult to follow even though the to- and from-spaces are marked. Controls are sometimes difficult, too

I absolutely LOVE the true boardless game of Hive- it is one of my favorite abstract strategy games. I was elated to discover Hive with AI, and I love that it has a two player mode. It helps newbies learn how and where the creepy crawlies move and can be legally positioned. I still prefer the tactile sensation of the actual game, but this version does the tile game justice. Very well done!

This is a completely free and also advertisement-free digital version of an amazing 2player strategy-boardgame. I gladly bought the 3 expansions available to support the game (each adding an additional new bug with a new movement-set and each costing less than 2 euro). These add additional complexity to the game, but are in no way required to enjoy the it.

Eft. E. T. Aug 7, 2020

Works exactly as it should and the AI can be quite challenging. If I'd have one criticism it would be the inability to pan/zoom when it's not your turn. I heartily recommend the expansions too (except maybe Carbon, which is just cosmetic) as they add great new options to the game and are priced decently.

I'm happy this game has been brought to android, but many improvements could be made. It needs stats: how many ganes won etc. You need to be able to create private tables and invite friends to them, or set a password to enter. Stop people leaving games before they lose or force a lose on them if they do. I haven't won a game yet or had my ranking changed as people just leave games right before the finishing move. Get rid of the message that states you've selected a wrong peice, its annoying.

The UI is not as polished as some of the best board game apps I've seen but gets the job done. I'm still learning the game and the AI in the hardest difficulty is challenging enough to make me learn more about the game. I just bought all the expansions as a way to support the development. I intend to use them once I feel comfortable with the base game.

Easy to learn and challenging to master, Hive is an excellent strategy game with a depth to its tactics. Each game is quick but every game seems very different. This app is a faithful implementation of the physical version with completely intuitive controls and an AI that's more than capable.

Joh. C. Oct 29, 2020

Really well designed UI - love that you can have multiple tables going. One caveat is that going back from your main table view does not bring you to the Offline/Online menu, it brings you to the login screen. I love that I can buy the expansions also. Well worth it!

Fun little game with a devious AI. Easy to play but tricky to master. I just wish the dated UI, graphics, and design were completely overhauled to suit modern times. Something clean and simple. Textured board options too. Stats for games won and lost. Insect design choices. Etc
