HRV4Training

The only scientifically validated HRV app that doesn't require an external sensor. HRV4Training helps you optimize your goals and prevent overtraining by measuring your Heart Rate Variability and providing tailored feedback on your physical condition. HRV4Training does not require a heart rate monitor, since it can accurately assess your HRV using the phone's camera.

On compatibility with your phone: the app will detect right away if your phone is supported so that you can always get a refund in case it is not. HRV4Training in addition to our camera based measurements, bluetooth and ANT sensors, supports the dedicated sensor present in Samsung Galaxy phones as well as the Oura ring.

HRV4Training is also the first app that goes beyond simple measurements and provides insights on:
1) acute or day to day HRV changes in response to different stressors (alcohol, travel, sick days, training, menstruation, etc.)
2) long term multi-parameter trends to look at the big picture
3) correlations between physiological measurements and annotations
4) training load analysis, fitness, fatigue, readiness to perform and injury risk
5) VO2max estimation for runners linking the app to Strava or TrainingPeaks
6) Training Polarization analysis (or 80/20)
7) Weekly and monthly summaries to track progress.

All data is processed inside the app in order to provide you with actionable interpretations that can help optimizing your training plan and performance.

Other features:
- HRV-based advice helps you to adapt your trainings based on objective measures of recovery
- TAGS: lets you tag your sleep, mental energy, muscle fatigue, stress and all other parameters that can help you understand what is influencing your physical condition and physiological stress
- Works with Bluetooth SMART heart rate monitors (a Polar H7 is recommended) or ANT+ heart rate monitors.
- Configurable test (choose test duration between 1, 3 or 5 minutes)
- Shows the PPG signal view to ensure signal quality during the test if the camera is used instead of a sensor
- Extracts and stores the following features while lying down and/or standing: heart rate, mean of beat-to-beat intervals (AVNN), standard deviation of beat-to-beat intervals (SDNN), square root of the mean squared difference of successive R-Rs (rMSSD), number of pairs of successive R-Rs that differ by more than 50 ms (pNN50), low frequency power (LF, 0.04-0.15 Hz), high frequency power (HF, 0.15-0.40 Hz)
- HRV4T Recovery Points to provide a single, straightforward metric to analyze your physical condition
- Population summaries and people like you comparisons to put your data into perspective
- Data export via email or Dropbox
- RR-intervals correction
- Integrates with TrainingPeaks, SportTracks, Genetrainer and Strava

Frustrating to use. For a £10+ app I would expect a professional, well built app. This constantly lags while scrolling, stutters when opening data screens (insights) and overall, is frustrating to use. It desperately needs optimising. Email sent to support and await a much-needed improvement before amending this review.

Can't get a quality measurement ever. Maybe works great on some phones, but no matter what finger position I use, after far too much effort, I've only ever seen a message that measurement quality is poor on my pixel 6. I know I'm not the only one struggling with this. Shame on me for not researching more. I regret this purchase.

Love the app. I've been using it daily for almost a year now. It really helps with making sure I'm not overtraining. Prior to the latest update, I generally had to open the app 2-3 times in order to get it to open. After the update, it opens on the first try. I'm looking forward to seeing where this app goes in the future.

Been using this app daily for years and it has gotten better and more complete with every update. All of my coaching clients use it also as long as I am coaching them.

Great App and big work behind made by developer to give us a very usefull information of our day by day. A "must have" app for every one who want to know how his body is working and reacting to training . The new look in latest upgrade is nice and very intuitive

Early days but delighted with the app so far. On a side note, customer service is first class.

Poor support and functionality on Android. Worked ok on an old phone but can't get a reading at all after I was forced to upgrade by 3G phasing out. So don't bother downloading this if you have a newer phone with multiple cameras. FYI to the dev, when I test the camera it says "good news your phone is compatible with the app but the reading quality was bad, please try again." There is no mention of this problem on the website or how to fix it, and no way to contact anyone to ask for help.

I have a Samsung 7 and this app worked great for the last 2 months but now the baseline screen is blank, the current day's reading is blank, I can't scroll backwards thru the history and every time I open the app, it shuts itself down so that I must open it a second time. This has been going on for a few weeks now despite installing again. Am waiting for an update? Update: it was a simple change of the settings that fixed this problem. Thank you!

Excellent HRV app. Strikes the right balance between complexity and usability to provide valuable feedback. The practice measurement feature with real time ECG/EKG style readout is extremely useful for learning how to get a good reading with your camera. This allows for experimentation with finger position, angle and pressure to find the ideal position for consistent readings. It takes a bit of experimentation and practice but once you figure out exactly where to put your finger on the camera and how hard to press it's extremely accurate and consistent.

(Note: I use a Garmin HRM-Dual chest strap sensor rather than the camera function.) The data presented is certainly interesting and I'm hoping it helps me to train and avoid the dreaded overtraining. The app itself is a tad bit basic and while all the data and functions can be found, I've found it's UI somewhat wanting and a bit of a chore to delve into their various insights. Perhaps that's good that they focus on the meat of their product (data analysis) rather than polish, though. Who knows?

Brilliant app, give it time to get your data and it can provide very useful insight. The developers are also incredibly friendly and enthusiastic and offer great help and support. I've just paid fkr my pro membership (about £50 for the year) which provides even more depth than on the app) but the app offers a huge amount for just £10. Well worth it if you're a keen sports person and want to see what has various effects on you. Brilliant!

This is a fantastic app. I am using it on a Samsung S7 phone, which has a builtin heart rate (HR) detector (IR), so I dont have to use the flash. So I may be biased on its ease of use in collecting data (no burnt fingertips that is). First and foremost, this app seems to be the only one that provides heart rate variability (HRV) off the bat for a generic phone (as others whom I recommended it to have found). Many kudos to the developer for providing such an essential tool for a low price.

Pretty glitchy for a 12 euro app, which is quite disappointing. Infinite zooming in graphs, when scrolling weeks I get multiple pop ups of the measurement message where I have to keep pressing cancel until it disappears. I find it odd that an app like this has the audacity to ask for such a big price compared to most apps when the functionality is not optimal. Yes the special measurement function and the research is worth a lot, but the app itself should also be working smoothly for such a price

Avoid, not useful or repeatable, more hassle than it's worth. I have been using this for some time, but I don't find the data repeatable or actionable. For example, I always measure in the morning immediately after waking up. I will measure once, the reading is low, and I see no reason why it should be low, so I measure again and the reading is completely different and is high. In other words the measurements are not repeatable ateast if you are using a phone camera. I regret paying for this !

Haven't had a problem with readings as others have, you just need to keep your finger still which isn't that difficult. What's missing is comments / info on what all the individual measures mean and what is good and why.. e.g. is a lower reading better than a higher one. Also why does the main screen show a number between 1-10 but the history doesn't show this, only the individual measures. Also the colouring bar on the home screen was a little confusing. It's a good app, needs polish.

Data transfers with Oura ring is hit and miss, every morning I wonder if the Link will work wit my Oura ring. Have to press on the button multiple time for the link to work. Sometimes HRV4TRAINING only pick up the data 12hrs + later. Now it ain't work on over 2 days. If you find something else use it unless you don't have a choice but then it still remain unreliable. App looks good but functionality is very poor.

Had to delete the old Postive review to leave this! Absolutely, unequivocally essential to modern healthy living The App, is a Game Changer!! The new look is fantastic. Bravo! The support is phenomenal and expert level. The symbiotic link to Oura is sublime. Where most apps have distinctions between the UI versions Apple and Android. Marco and team have brought parity!!!

App is a great training aid and the devs give great support. I'd recommend an high end phone though as the app can take a few tries for an optimal reading at times. May be down to phone updates🤔 Update since the Samsung sensor support. fantastic addition & I find I get an optimal reading first time rather than a few attempts. Only change is my baseline & readings have dropped from around 8.0 to 7.5-7.6. Another + it's less disruptive to my wife's sleep due to no flash light.

Since my Samsung's Android software was updated this app became just a keeper of nearly 3 year's worth of data. Everytime I select an ANT+ HR strap, it says go to store and get ANT Utilities app (which and several others were installed). Fix your app @Marco. The problem seems to be with your app not realising everything is there to work. EliteHRV seems to be the way to go. Stable. Working 104 days in a row. Showing lovely graphs. And it works.

Mar. F. Jul 24, 2021

The app worked fine for about 3 days but now no longer connects to the Oura ring to import HRV data. I tried tweaking the settings and re-authorizing Oura, but nothing worked. Had to reinstall to get it working again, but this means I lost all app data and had to set the app up again from scratch. It's a nice app with valuable reports and insights, but much too unstable to rely on. I'm going to look for another solution.

Started using the app last week. It was easy to pair my Galaxy S9+ Smartphone with my Polar H9 heart sensor and chest strap. I chose this app because it was rated the most accurate by a study published in March 2021 that examined 7 popular apps that measure HRV. The app is easy to use and the results are easy to understand. As the app collects more data over the days and weeks it gives you insights to manage stress and balance training and lifestyle.

Tod. S. Mar 29, 2022

Switched to an HRV app with my Garmin that uses a chest strap after this one stopped functioning completely. Was great while it worked but hasn't worked on my pixel 5 for some time (can't get readings... maybe 1 out of 10 are deemed good, though I have spent cumulative HOURS figuring out the finger placement over the camera on this phone, and know I'm doing it right/ consistently)

Hen. R. Jul 13, 2019

Not sure if my phone is the problem, but it just doesn't work well. Though it would take me a few tries to get a good quality measurement in the beginnings, it wasn't that bad. But then I took some time off training and continued using the app - I noticed that my recovery points were pretty low all the time though I was feeling great. So I decided to give it a break and get back to it later. Now it's not working at all - the measurements give ridiculous results if any at all. What a pity.

It needs to have some kind of indicator to show that your finger is in the correct spot like Google Fit does. Also needs to wait until the dinner is in the correct spot. The countdown starts right away so you think everything is good until it's over and it tells you it wasn't good enough. Unfortunately you have to wait a minute to find out is not going to work.

For people traveling it is a very convenient HRV app as it utilize the phone Camera. Apparently it seems to work. I have not experienced any noticeable unexpected deviation from another app I use parallel at home. I have experienced an impeccable service. For amateur the depth and comprehensive of the information can be perceived as overwhelming, but it give you an opportunity to grow and heightened your knowledge in the HRV field.
