Human Japanese

Needs to be updated. The content is really great but it feels like a very cheaply made app in I's current form. It's locked into landscape and there is no way to navigate to seperate chapters or a contents page. It's like navigating a book by only turning one page at a time. The app alludes to an in-app "menu" with preferences and other options but I can find no such thing. It seems that whatever extra functionality it had in the past has been broken with Android updates.

Great teaching style, I wish it had progress syncing. I used Duolingo for a year before a friend recommended Human Japanese, and the teaching style is miles better than the simple memorization without any explanation. I appreciate that lessons are broken up with different types of info so it doesn't feel like a "grind". I just wish there were a way to sync my progress across devices--that would bump this app up to five stars.

It is so easy to use! I'm progressing a lot faster because it is. I've tried other classes and methods but this one is actually working! Looking forward to Sora reading. It's kind of addicting and I have to force myself to stop and remember to review. The app is best of all. It works smoothly, no problems there! Unlike the last one. I was using, this one is well organized, easy to follow and I am not forgetting because it keeps reviewing my difficulties and reinforces.

Human Japanese is amazing. The format is excellent, the lessons are well organized, the quizzes help solidify what the chapters went over and the interface is simply outstanding. My ONLY point of contention is that if you reset or change your phone (which sadly, I have done both six times in one year), you WILL have to start over--bookmarks, notes and all. Of course, it gives me the opportunity to start from the beginning and re-learn things, but it can become slightly frustrating. Try it out!

At first the price tag turned me off. But once I bought it and started using it, I quickly realized that this thing will help me greatly. The explanations are so thorough and they just make sense. The example sentences and chapter quizzes really help to make the grammar and vocab stick. Overall, I am incredibly happy with this app, and recommend it to anyone who is looking for another explanation of grammar points that just haven't seemed to make sense yet!

If you've tried many Japanese reading apps that are too confusing to use, look no further. This one is truly relaxing to read, and the examples provided truly are helpful and easy to understand. Each step isn't too big or too small, so I feel I can study with this for much longer than many other apps that quickly get too exhausting. Only suggestion I'd leave is to allow portrait orientation. :)

I highly recommend this app having just finished it. If you are considering learning Japanese, this app provides a structured but fun experience and starts from the absolute basics. It explains topics in a natural way that makes it easy to understand and remember. I also appreciate the lessons being interlaced with cultural notes. I would give more than 5 stars if I could and hope their intermediate app is just as good.

This is a great app for a beginner in Japanese! Great balance of learning vocabulary / grammar and cultural facts. My only criticism is that flipping through pages is somewhat slow, I'd like to see a way to go to specific pages to check up something from earlier. Currently this takes needlesly long. Also maybe add a dictionary / vocabulary section to see everything at once (per chapter / topic). Otherwise, I higly recommend for beginners!

this is the interactive book i was able to start with because i could trust it to teach actual fundamentals with the right hints in a pragmatic way. grammar, selected example sentences with audio and explanations, cultural context and quick tests with useful questions are presented. it was a fun experience and i thank everyone involved in creating this app. 3 things i thought could be improved: remove all usages of the word "simply", make tests go faster, other names for the 3 adjective types.

Great method to be introduced to Japanese, I like the way grammar is explained, it makes it less daunting. Quizzes and chapter tests could be much better, this is too easy and doesn't help with practicing writing or audio comprehension, I would prefer more audio tests. Chapter 32 is way to dense (probably because there is no chapter 31?) and discouraging. Counting objects should have been spread across many chapters.

This is like reading an interactive book, and it's great at explaining how the grammar works. I give it 5-stars only because you can use free user-created Memrise courses to practice the vocabulary. The only other issue is with the Hiragana and Katakana quizzes being "Concentration" style, which is just *too much*, but you don't have to complete those so I won't mark it down. It's definitely worth the $10 on Android!

It does a great job explaining grammar. By far they do excellent work explaining how Japanese works. I found its tool for memorizing hiragana worthless, which is the only reason I didn't give it five stars. I really wish it would not use a memory game that requires you to spend too much time remembering where cards are. If all the cards were flipped over or one group it would be far more useful.

It deserves the 4.8 rating. The teaching method is very natural and there is lots of cultural insight that most apps don't have. Lots of things this app taught me that I was glad i knew when i went to Japan. One thing I would really like to see, however is a vocab catalogue -either in app or as a separate app with all the vocab covered and some Flash cards or something like that. The vocab is scattered throughout the chapters which komd of makes it hard to review. Hope to see an advanced app!

so good! It was able to progress me from a total novice knowing not a single word or character to feeling like i could get by on holiday in just 4 weeks. it really is written in a human way, like the author is sitting next to you. You get insightful and interesting cultural facts as well as lessons and tests. the prgression of what you learn is just perfect. well worth thr money.

Excellent introduction to Japanese featuring smart, engaging lessons in a writing style that makes learning feel natural while also explaining grammatical nuances in ways that make sense. HJ effectively introduced the Japanese writing system, sentence structure and vocabulary. Personally I wrote notes and vocab from each chapter which helped with retention (at least for me) and made it easier to flip between chapters to review, but for 10 bucks you really can't beat this intro to the language.

This in an app for beginners, from the beginning. It's the start of a journey, and when you finish the app you're not going to be able to pick up a Japanese novel and make sense of it (but no app does that). With that in mind, this is probably the clearest and most interesting Japanese app for beginners I've come across. The author has a great knack for explaining things clearly and making things click. Try it, and if you get to the end then check out Human Japanese Intermediate (which I think is even better).

Absolutely IN LOVE with this app! Have been using it for a while, and I definitely feel like I'm learning. Genuinely starts from the beginning, and goes into explanations that will make Japanese make sense! The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that you can't sync progress across devices... I've had to start over SO many times...

Hands down one of my favorite and most use app. I love how easy this makes learning Japanese and how they break away after a few lessons and teach you the culture. That little break to me is one of the most fun thing about this. It keeps me interested and looking forward to the next snippet. I highly recommend anyone to give this app a go if you are really interested in learning Japanese. One small downside is that I wish it have more practice session. I use this in conjunction with Genki.

This is by far the best Japanese learning material I have encountered. Just finished working through the app and I found that the approach they take and the order in which they teach the different concepts are really effective (for me in any case). Some concepts that I have struggled with before were so well explained that I easily understood them. I definitely recommend this app! ありがとうございます！

Progress data is stored only on the device, but a menu setting is available to unlock all content, so not strickly necessary to start over when changing devices. Some small errors, like claiming Japanese does not have stress modulation: "Nope. Not at all."; actually some words have preferred stress patterns, especially some homonyms: "hashi" has different meanings depending on rising, falling, flat-low, or flat-high pronunciation (Source: guidance from native Kansai & Kanto dialects speakers).

Amazing app. I downloaded the 'Lite' version on the recommendation of Chris Broad from the Abroad in Japan podcast and I was so impressed that I bought the full version after a few days. Learning Japanese through this app is better than any language learning experience I have had I the past. Really worth the money. When learning, French I paid for evening classes, private tuition and text books, but I didn't grasp the basics of the language as quickly as I've picked Japanese with HJ.

Hands down the best Japanese learning app on the market, and I mean that. Duolingo has a place, and so do Anki, Drops, and the rest, but I didn't truly start sticking to my Japanese-learning path until Human Japanese came along. The sentence ingredients and countless examples offered throughout make a huge difference.

This app is excellent. Well-built and a good companion study source for absolute beginners. The explanations and audio clips are among the best I've found in an app.

I have had this app for a while but now that I'm spending a few months in Japan, I decided to take it more seriously. I've just completed the course and wanted to say a huge thank you to the authors and developers. This app has enhanced my understanding of Japanese and overall Japan experience so much. I have just purchased the intermediate app to keep improving!

It's good, but severely lacks Kanji, which is crucial to learning Japanese. Even Duolingo doesn't delay in teaching the script from the very beginning. Believe it or not, it is easier to read sentences WITH Kanji charachters. I don't think this app would teach you much for actually being in Japan when you realized almost nothing is spelled out in Hiragana.

This is the best japanese learning app I've tried. I have bought and use both the beginner and the intermediate versions. The grammar points are very well explained, the vocabulary and the cultural notes quite extensive and the author has a great humour which makes the studying a lot of fun. I recommend this app wholeheartedly!
