I decided to download the lite version to try out but after going through all the chapters, I realized I should have just downloaded and paid for the full version (which I already did!). This app is not like other apps that makes you memorize the letters or vocabulary. Human Japanaese provides cultural background, context, language rules, and reading and pronunciation guides. Basically, every basic thing you need to know in learning Japanese. Seriously, just download the full version.
Great app: clean UI, runs smoothly and I haven't encountered any bugs yet. I would've rated the app 5 stars, if it weren't for the Hiragana matching quiz. That quiz is the worst offender possible: it's a 4x8 grid, of matching the kana with its correct romaji, a guessing game that ranks the user based on the elapsed time, but just by glossing through every choice it will take you more than enough time to net you with a SINGLE star. Isn't this supposed to test our knowledge, not our speed, luck?
Great app so far, very informative and the extra background on the language is really interesting. My only gripe would be a lack (as far as I can tell) of a portrait mode, but it's understandable if it's not possible or too much work for the formatting used.
Utterly wonderful Japanese course. And it is an actual course, not just a bunch of flash cards. This is as good as the Genki textbooks. My only complaint is that the end of lesson tests aren't useful. I learn 30 new vocabulary words and get 10 questions to test my mastery? So it needs to be supplemented by something like Anki for testing. But that's a small flaw. Absolutely worth buying the full version.
This app is definitely not for me. It is WAY too slow paced and i despise the "memory game"-style reviews at the end of the chapters. The writing and explanations are great and comprehensive. But the pace of this app hurts my soul! I can't stand how slow the quizzes are to react and I often had to restart the app because the chapters messed up and overlapped each other so nothing was legible. This will surely be a great app for some people but I personally can't stand it.
It feels like I'm learning with classroom grade materials, I've barely started and I'm already tempted to buy the full version. Similar apps are great for characters and words but this one surpasses them with well rounded lessons and quizzes.
It's decent, I like that it walks you through everything step by step. Though as a non native English speaker, I find the pronunciation guide pretty annoying. I feel like it can help you pronounce in the short run, but I find it much better to learn each kana character's pronunciation individually before moving on to words and sentences.
What an introduction you got there. That app seems very promising, the only think I dislike is that the interface of the app is most of times aesthetically flat, without deep in the elements, but it is overall really clean and beautiful.
A really great app. I downloaded this on the recommendation of Chris Broad from the Abroad in Japan podcast and I was so impressed with the app that I bought the full version after about 4 days. Learning Japanese through this app is better than any language learning experience I have had I the past.
I can understand why this app is raved about, but I definitely think it misses some points early on by wanting to be "beginner friendly". Want to learn Japanese? Try LingoDeer. Much better material, and quizzes to help with retention (I'm not being paid to say that). Good luck with your studies! 🍀
Excellent app. Really explains Japanese before you start to learn it to give you a context of it's history and how it works as a language. Although I still enjoy using other language apps, this is a really well written and entertaining well-rounded app. Would give 6 stars out of 5 if I could!
I have tried almost every Japanese language learning app. This one is my favorite. It explains Japanese in the context of its development and the cultural norms that affect usage. I feel I understand both the people and the language at a deeper level. It is an excellent approach to language acquisition.
Great app!! The developers used an approach that somewhat parallels how children are taught their native language in school starting with the writing system. At least that's my take on it; this greatly appeals to me. Now I just wish they would branch out to other languages!
Much better than duolingo. It might not be as flashy and gamified (thankfully), but it's much better at actually teaching you the language.
Everything was going well until I was about to continue in the 9th chapter. I would have to pay to continue . I don't even have money to continue. I was really looking forward to completing all the chapters, but it's ok I guess, nothings really free. But I would like to say thank you to the developer that 8 chapters helped me alot.
Honestly wasnt expecting alot since other apps haven't really helpped me learn, but abroad in Japan wasnt lying. Definitely taught me alot so far and will get the full version.
This app has surpassed my expectations, it's like if you had a personal Japanese teacher. I also love how it addresses your concerns on certain topics, and how it shows you real life examples. I'm definitely purchasing the complete version.
Decided on a whim to try learning Japanese and very very impressed with this app. Heading over the paid version now, absolutely worth it!
The writing style of this format greatly appeals to me, went ahead and bought the full version since it's widely recommended and seems super valuable for $10
I used this app many years ago when I first started learning Japanese. I now live in Japan. Out of all the different learning materials I have used over the years, this app was by far the best. Highly recommended for those first starting out.
Just a great app for leaning in japanese. It doesn't try to just shove things in your face until you remeber them, and it's not too boring for you to lose interest.
Has everything you need. Worth getting the premium. Grammar is properly explained. The tone is that of a friend that's teaching you.
Teaches basic grammar and vocabulary required for simple conversation. Also has nice cultural notes, and great explanations with japanese audio.
Highly Recommend for all beginners. . . I learned so much that I paid for the complete set. . . Much love for the developer. . . I am using this as guide to what and which to learn. . . to all of those who are confuse where and how to start this app is god sent. . . 5 stars if I could give 10 stars I would. . .
Very good lessons with good material. Makes learning the ins and outs of Japanese grammar a lot easier.
3* for now. Why did you make it more complicated for long vowels than it needs to be? e&o you made it ei&ou instead of the obvious ee&oo. What if a word actually has ei or ou, then what? You give an example of Tokyo/Toukyou/to-o-kyo-o. It is still oo not ou in prounciation so why would you force that idea on the learner? Why not simply use a dash over the long vowels? Make an option to remove all the weird endings for long vowels please. Unless you can provide a better explaination. Thank you.
Very very very lengthy explanations, probably great if you have good concentration and want to read a lot of theory before any practical exercises
If you like the first chapters, the full version is definitely worth paying for. I'm at the intermediate version now.
I started out learning Japanese on Duolingo, but I find this app much more helpful and easy to understand!
while i like this app and I'm 8 chapters into it, I'm frustrated that there doesn't seem to be a way to study and drill the vocabulary without going to the individual tables in each chapter and clicking on words. I was really expecting some sort of flashcard-like functionality for building the vocabulary introduced in each lesson. Maybe I'm missing something?
