I use it birding with clients frequently. I wish the species were indexed so i can do quick look-ups, rather than having to scroll down to the common name. Update: it's gotten much more user friendly since my last review. Some more photos of different races would be nice, but then it would be perhaps too large.
this app has all the features I was looking for at a reasonable price. It includes range, sounds, photos, descriptions and more. I am learning to identify more birds with every use. This is handy to have on my phone as I travel throughout USA. I do wish it included a region specific feature to save time searching for a bird I glimpsed. Fortunately it includes a list of similiar birds. I wouldn't be without this app. My grandkids use it to learn too.
I've been using this app, and have liked it very much, for more than a year. Great information - nice pictures, maps, sounds - easy to use. However, using the "Similar" birds function (which I use a lot) now crashes the app. It's not that the function doesn't work - it crashes the app. That problem has reduced the usefulness of the app and I find myself using other apps more frequently. So far, I have not seen any acknowledgement of this problem by the developer despite multiple reports of it in these reviews.
Search options are great for narrowing down list of possibilities. The in app purchases are few and reasonably priced. Like most field guides, this one skews toward an east coast bias, but less so than others (I'm looking at you, Merlin). The biggest flaw I've encountered is the list of endemic Hawaiian birds is missing quite a few birds, and it would be nice to be able to search by specific island.
Excellent features such as photos, sounds, superior range maps and links to outside sources. I would give it 5 stars if they would get rid of the bugs. I find that if I leave the app open and move on to other apps, sometimes when I try and open iBird it locks up my phone and I have to reboot in order to open iBird.
I've used this app for a while but previously on Apple phone... now, on Android. I've always enjoyed it vs. carrying & fumbling with 2-3 books. And, bird songs are a delight. Search ability is great along with photos & range maps make this a "must have" app. Improvements: App would be even better with a "comparison" feature with ability to view 2 or 3 birds on same screen.
I have the Pro version. The search function worked perfectly until recently. Words that used to turn up results now show "no result", such as "sapsucker". It would even anticipate the word before I actually completed the entry. What can I do to fix this or is this a bug in the latest version? Previous to this, I would have given this app a 5-star rating, but this does cause problems that were NOT there before. re: the reply from Mitch Waite Group 2: The button you refer to DOES say Common Name.
This app was a big disappointment. I switched from iOS to Android and was distressed to discover that for whatever reasons iBird Pro won't download the "bird" files on my Moto G. In other words, the app's system functions are there but I can't access any information on birds (pictures, songs, etc.) I have 75 G of memory available so memory isn't the issue. I have to run it off of whatever wireless data signal is around. This is horrible in remote areas. So I'm stuck using Sibley which runs fine on Android. Pass on iBird & get Sibley if you use Android.
I haven't been able to use it on the field because I haven't been able to download the database. When I tried to submit my “help me" it said verification failed 🤔. But pictures and information on birds are wonderful. l just tried calling and was unsuccessful too! I was prompt to press 2 for support and for some reason it was a fax line 🤯 Not sure what to think. . .
I find this app to be invaluable for bird ID whether I'm birding in the field, or sitting in my garden feederwatching. I like that there are several options for searching and now that I have things set up how I want them, the app is extremely easy to use. I especially like the artist's renditions of the birds in addition to the photos.
Love that this app includes both illustrations and photos. I have a number of bird ID apps on my phone, but this is definitely my go to. I also love all of the additional information you get, such as habits, behavior, eggs color, conservation status, and many other specifics that other bird info apps (and even physical field guides) don't include.
Great app. Well designed. Easy to learn and use. Multiple pics of reach species and field marks help a lot with similar species identification. Unfortunately, for reasonable number of species, there is not a song or alarm call recorded for Washington State. Once the missing calls and songs are added for this area, I will give it a five Star.
Love the app. 1. The "Birds Around Me" failed to include birds I know are common in my area. That appears to have been fixed as of 11/27/21. 2. I use "Locally Common" [by state] as a substitute to exclude the many birds that certainly never come here, but it won't stay selected. I have to reselect the state every day, even though I Ieave the app open. Both flaws together cause me to waste time getting back to my default starting point.
Updated review: dropped the rating. The app has problems with initial startup at least 50% of the time where it gets stuck on first screen and I have to close app and start again. I contacted support to verify if the app is compatible with the newly released Android 10 OS. 3 wks later they respond saying they have no reports of compatibility issues with iOS 10... Ugh! That's not what I asked! Get the free Audubon app that's better. Original review: good app. use Favorites to keep my life list
Galaxy Note 8 with 128 GB storage.. App won't download. iBird Lite worked perfect, but Pro says it's 1.5 GB app and only downloads 76.37 MB. I've uninstalled and tried to download again multiple times. I've cleared cache and tried again. Each time it seems to be smaller. No images, no sounds. Says I have no internet when I click on birds to view, however it lets me register and sync to cloud. All other apps that require internet work fine. Emailed developer, but have not heard back so far.
I have a Samsung s9 and have been unable to download databse. I also cannot access any pictures or details of birds. keep getting message saying I have no internet access. even though I have a strong signal. have tried connecting to friend's wifi to see if makes a difference. does not. I sent an email to customer support. was told about a week ago an update was being released next day to fix this issue. I was advised to uninstall app until update. complete waste of money and zero tech help.
Amazing bird identification app! I use it all the time in the field, especially when leading naturalist hikes. I especially like the variety of photos, bird sounds/calls (I do NOT use them to call in birds!!), range maps that include Mexico, and all the behaviour notes. The search function Rocks! I've recommended this app to many. Thank you for a quality birding app - better and lighter than a field guide.
This is a great app. I had it on my HTC 10 and it works perfectly. But I am experiencing difficulty using the app when I switched my phone to huawei mate 20 pro. The app resets itself every time I open it. Please help fix this problem. Thank you The app still resets after I reinstall it multiple times. Despite it's a good app, it's useless if it cannot work.
This app was great in the past. But the most recent version forces you to download a 1.4 gb file to the internal SD card, instead of downloading the app internally then downloading the database separately to a larger, external SD. App is no longer usable on my phone. I was hoping this was an April Fool's joke, but apparently not.
Frustrating beyond belief. Tried 3 times to download the App. Each time it I just got a "Download Pending" message and nothing further. Because it hadn't actually done anything I was able to click the "Refund" button. Email to the company was ignored completely. Terrible customer service. I have now downloaded the App (shows 100%complete) but isn't installing. Wish I had chosen Sibley App. Terrible experience.
Love this app so much. Functionality is consistently perfect. One thing I wish is that it included more behavioral cues (tail bobbing, scratching in the underbrush vs singing at the top of a tall tree, etc). Even without, I can't imagine going back to a paper field guide; this is infinitely more convenient and user friendly. The advanced search feature is essential.
