The ice maker is great at making ice but the smart features are not well thought out or implemented. At the time of writing, the app has not been updated in over a year and the basic function of setting an off/on schedule requires an active bluetooth connection to a phone/tablet for it function. How about publishing the communication spec and let the community take it over for voice assistant integration, bug fixes, etc.?

Essential but full of issues. After weeks of trying to customize the schedule, the app arbitrarily changes the schedule from one day to another. I can't even get it to save weekend vs week day schedule. It always reverts to my weekend schedule being Tuesday / Wednesday. Only way to get some semblance of reliability is to apply the schedule from one day to all days. Very much defeats the purpose.

What am I missing? We bought an Opal for the "smart" functionality. Either the machine or the app is not so smart. Perhaps because this is a Bluetooth only connection, the controlling decive has to be close by, powered on, with Bluetooth signal transmitting. I guess that means I'll be able to use the smart aspects of this machine when I'm standing in my kitchen. I guess that's "1990s smart". Hmmmm

Unreliable app. If you manually turn off the device, the app interprets that as "I never want to use a schedule again." Schedules are disabled and sometimes completely erased. If the low water sensor comes on, the app prevents you from turning off the device. The button is greyed out. It also overrides the schedule, letting the maker run for extra hours instead of turning off at the scheduled time. This once again overrides all schedules and sometimes erases them.

It used to work great...now it won't connect to my ice maker. It shows within the app that there is a new version, but will not update. It won't even update through Google Play. It gives the oldest version.

Completely worthless app. I don't know who the QA team is at GE for app development but they should look for another line of work. This app connected to my machine ONE time and hasn't connected since. I've placed my phone directly on top of the ice maker, next to it, below, inside of it, everywhere you could think of to "be in Bluetooth range" and nada!!!

Looks like it could have been cool but doesn't work at all. I got the app, paired device, named my opal, and then left app. When i went back it, its like i was never there. The name was gone. And i was standing right next to the opal and it said i wasnt in range. Uninstalling. Such a disappointment. Over $500 for an icemaker and app and the app doesn't work. Grrr.

Poor QA and bug testing. Was able to connect, set up a schedule for the work week vs weekend, and adjust lighting. And then I walked away. Later I noticed the ice maker was off. Checked the schedule. My schedule for the middle of the week was now the weekend. Changed it, left the schedule menu went back and Saturday was now Tuesday. Left went back, Tuesday was now Thursday. As a software developer I would be ashamed to submit an app like this for public use.

Impressively useless after the first connection. I was able to connect once, but my phone is now "not in range" no matter how close I am, whether i reboot my phone or reinstall the app, and consequently the app is completely useless going forward. Not an inspiring app development...

I'd love for someone to explain why this app needs access to my photos and media in order to find the ice maker. The feedback button literally does nothing, and help only takes you to a FAQ. The app is almost as useless as the incredibly loud and inefficient as the ice maker itself

Same issue for me. It does not recognize the device even when I'm standing next to it. I have had the icemaker not quite two months and it has become very noisy. I heard that through the app there might be software update adjustment, but if it can't even find the icemaker, what good is it? I'm a GE retiree and was very excited to get the icemaker, but it would be nice if the app worked.

Waste of time. Maybe cool of it worked. I downloaded the app, it connected to my Opal via bluetooth, had me rename my Opal if I wanted to and when I was done, I closed the app. When I relaunched the app, it wasn't there. A generic "My Opal" was there and offline. When I tried to connect via bluetooth it says there aren't any GE devices around (I'm standing in front of it). So I close the app again. I check the bluetooth list, it's there, relaunch the app, nothing. Uninstalling this app.

If I could give 0 stars I would. Who thought it was a good idea to make an app that stops your ice maker from making ice when you leave Bluetooth range? You have to make a new connection every time you leave BT range and the schedules you made stop working! If I leave my house my "smart" ice maker won't make ice? Useless. Waste of time. GE: this is terrible and you should feel bad. Fix it!

Pros + It exists and is free + You don't need the app to make ice or do much of anything else Cons - it doesn't work, and it has never worked, between 2 machines - linking to machines and connecting wifi nearly impossible

Location services required to locate ice maker... Really?? Seems like for the incredibly futuristic and advanced capabilities of any Android (or any phone/tablet/PC) there may be other technologies like WiFi or Bluetooth maybe (?) to accomplish such tasks might be able to suffice?) Anywho you can feel the angst, not into shameless data mining I still have the Opal app uninstalling this garbage now...

Like others have said, this app is useless. Once you connect and close the app, the connection is lost and you have to start over. The only point of this app is to set a schedule for the ice making to occur, and it doesn't even do that.

The app can't connect. It just keeps saying "No Opal Appliance was found". For a machine this expensive I can't believe the app for it is completely non-functional.

been using it for awhile it is glitchy.. either smart home by GE .. the Other home GE App neither keep my opal icemaker online properly constantly have to rescan to link and I believe due to its glitchy online offline and scheduling irregularities it burned out a unit because it did not interact properly with the Opal and left it running unnecessarily

Allows me to turn on and off the lights and the Ice Making, but I can't figure out how the scheduler works. Are the hours highlighted supposed to be on or off? I tried to set a schedule but when the time I expected the ice maker to start making ice, nothing happened. I ended up needing to manually turn on the ice making at 4 am to ensure I would have ice three hours later. The app is NOT intuitive and there are NO instructions available at least not where I could find them.

AP FOR OPAL (ABSOLUTELY) REQUIRES ACCESS TO PERSONAL FILES, PHOTOS, AND LOCATION. NONE OF THOSE ARE ESSENTIAL TO GIVE THE OWNER BASIC SCHEDULING AND IN HOME REMOTE CONTROL. It's an invasion of privacy that, had I known would have prevented my purchase. It's extortion!

After hours of fighting with it and trying to connect trough bluetooth, the only thing I can get to work is turn on/off the night light. The schedule is a nightmare, are the blocks suppose to be grayed out or left white?? I guess not even GE knows this.

I created a schedule but it won't keep it. When I go back, it has changed! When my husband comes home from work the ice maker is off and he has no ice! What's the point of setting schedules if the app is going to change it?!

Bought an Opal 2 ice maker and didn't realize that this is the wrong app for it until I scanned the QR code on the post card that's in the box. SmartHQ is the app you need to use for those not able to connect to their new ice maker.
