IKEA Place

IKEA Place is built on ARCore and lets you virtually 'place' IKEA products in your space. It also has a ‘visual search’ function: point your camera at any piece of furniture you love and your phone will tell you which IKEA product it is or resembles the most.

The app includes 3D and true-to-scale models of everything from sofas and armchairs to footstools and coffee tables. IKEA Place gives you an accurate impression of the furniture’s size, design and functionality in your home so you can stop wondering and start doing.

To place furniture:
- Make sure the room is well lit and hold your smartphone at waist level
- Make sure the floor in front of you is non-reflective and free of clutter
- Scan an empty piece of floor by moving your device around
- Search the list of available products and select one
- Find an empty spot in the room, rotate and place the product there
- Select other products and add them to your room to make a new Place.

To use visual search:
- Tap the visual search button in the left-hand corner of the app
- Adjust the frame that appears to fit around the object you want to search for
- Click ‘search’ and compare your object to the IKEA products we found that match it the closest

The app lets also you share your 'place' with social apps like WhatsApp or Instagram. Look out for updates as more IKEA products and additional functionality arriving soon.

Great idea, but doesn't work very well. It's hard to find products (you basically need to find them on the web then search for the specific item here) most products aren't included. But main issue is the product is completely out of proportion and just floats in the air. Most AR apps use some kind of printed placeholder you put on the floor to anchor the AR image, after using this app I can see why, without this it just doesn't work, it's just a gimmick

Design Issue I think this application has good potential, but it has to be redesiged. For instance, the fact that the camera is on all the time is: - consuming the battery - slowing down all the operation (scroll lag, delay in updates, and so on) - useless, since with any menu open you can't use the camera anyway! This makes the application almost unusable, for a feature that is not even useful. I have a MotorolaX4, I don't think it is my phone's fault :)

Cool idea, execution isn't so great. Menu interface is slow since camera and AR is still going even when just trying to do text search. App didn't get initial scale of room and objects right which kind of defeats the point. Unclear how (if?) it's possible to rotate items. I'd be willing to enter relative dimensions of the room or take a photo sphere to help the app with dimensions. Will come back to try a later version but won't continue using this one.

Good but needs work. The AR / camera should only turn on when placing items after selecting from the catalogue. When switching items or going back to catalog view it should turn off. saves battery and doesn't slow down device. I understand why it's left on. It allows for faster placement but is inefficient use of device resources. Oh and back button doesn't seems to work at times in AR mode. Meaning can't exit app. Add an exit button too maybe?

Straight up just doesn't work. You select furniture to place and it doesn't place it at all. Also the search doesn't work so you have to scroll through long lists of items before discovering that the app does nothing. Also doesn't have the full selection of colours for items that are available on the store. Great idea when shopping online during Covid, just unfortunately falls flat on its face in implementation.

Lovely app, I'm enjoying it. Although most pictures in the catalog are missing, at least in my region (red question mark placeholder). What I'm also missing is user account integration. That would make it much more convenient to find saved favorite specific products in the myriads of options. Or at least enable search by product number - so we can use the much better search engine on the website and then see the found products on this app.

It's hard to grasp something to move it, I didn't discover how to rotate, and everything was super small. An option to change the scale of everything/callibrate would be great. By the way, it's better to ask the user to aim at the wall rather than the floor, since the latter are more likely to be reflectant and repetitive (bad for ARCore).

AR works pretty well but the UX si broken. When I open an collection on my Galaxy S8+ and start scrolling through the products it always jumps back to the top of the list as soon as I let go of my finger, making it pretty useless since I can't select any of the products which are not directly featured on the main page.

Great potential but needs a lot of work. Furniture with similar names will get loaded in place of the furniture you actually select. For example; BRÅTHULT corner unit will place the NON-corner unit. On my partners phone, selecting a Red Coloured BRÅTHULT will load the Corner unit, regardless if you select the corner unit version or not. While on my device, there is simple no way to place the Corner unit at all, no selection provides this. Other issues such as; -When searching, the list of items will move and scroll and add more items to the list, VERY frustrating. -Took me quite a few tries to even conduct my first search. App displays a huge text entry field, but actually the place you're supposed to tap is an extremely missable tiny white-against-white input area that I simply did not see. Application did not display software keyboard so I had no idea why I couldn't type -At times furniture will randomly rotate after it has been 'placed' Overall a frustrating user experience. There is forgivable fiddling with moving the furniture in AR, this is fine but it's clear issues like furniture randomly shifting after placement and wrong items are not related AR sensors.

Poor execution on this app. Was unable to recalibrate when I went into a new room until I force quit the app twice. Proportion of furniture to space was WAY off. Unable to use category search after 1 attempt of placing furniture. Keyboard took a while to open when trying to execute search. I also attempted to submit a review in the app and it just gave me a white screen after I sent the review. This app needs a ton of work.

Awful... You can't place the furniture where you want, can't resize it, rotating them is also tricky and the phone is heating like crazy (Mi 9T Pro)! Not to mention the stupid and slow conversation like for managing settings. Also the app itself is very sluggish and if you want to exit quickly from it, it doesn't work! Good ideea but needs refining. I draw faster than this app! Uninstalled!

Another AR junk app that doesn't work. Keeps adding furniture sized either for dolls, or, if you're lucky, children. In any case it makes it useless for interior design. Update: the scan was done in a brightly lit, mostly empty, carpeted room. And was attempted several times. The app was restarted for some of these attempts.

i have to re type the search words EVERY time after I click on a product, the camera is aaaalways running even when just browsing (huuuuge waste of battery!) I stopped and uninstalled it after dealing with both of those frustrations for a few min. i also couldn't adjust the floor when placing my product so it was hovering off the floor instead of looking like it was actually being placed properly

great idea, but seems to be a bad port of an iOS app. searching doesn't bring up the keyboard. some screens aren't intuitive. placement of items seems to just do random sizing so not sure you can actually get an accurate feel. i say all this as an IKEA fan.

It works well. Make sure to find detailed areas during the initial scan to get the right scale. Just wish I can save the position of everything and not need to reposition them every time I close the app. Other than that, everything works as expected.

This is easily one of the worst apps on the app store. First it kept freezing and wouldn't"scan the floor". Uninstalled it and reinstalled it but now it's stuck at 55% and "Hold on, we're reloading some stuff" whatever that means. Tried it on two devices with zero success.

Tam. D. May 29, 2019

A really good idea, but a terrible execution. I wanted to do one very simple thing, to place one object to see how it fits, but it can't be resized, so the sofa ended up being around a meter wide... Unusable as it is. I'd love to see some updates.

Oza. A. Oct 19, 2020

Needs more control over size and position to be usable. Did not manage to get a single good size and placement for a tv cabinet. It only lets you rotate and move the furniture back and forth in a set space. You cant correct its perception of the room or the size of the furniture to get a better idea of the fit.

JOA. K. Jul 8, 2020

This app would be much better if you could freely resize the furniture after you place it. No matter what I do all the pieces I try end up teeny tiny so it doesn't really give me a good feel for what they'd look like in the space.

Yui. O. Oct 12, 2018

Need improvements. There is no clear guide on how to place and turn the placed item. Hope that the item have a more realistic look. The current one is too cartoon

Chr. B. Dec 15, 2018

This app is just crazy! I'm checking out furniture in my room as if it was there! The only thing that's annoying me is that it is clunky because it's not native UI. Navigating and scrolling feels uncomfortable.

tok. 1. Jan 4, 2020

Broken. Long time ago last I used it, it would show an object pretty well, made having a new phone with arc pretty cool. Now it's spacial perception is totally broken. It makes furniture micro sized.

Pet. M. Oct 16, 2018

Would rather use VR glasses, like Oculus or Vive. Manipulation objects with this app is difficult, and not sure if the scale of things is right, i.e. a tiny closet of only one feet high is cute but not great for planning your space

Hai. C. Sep 27, 2018

It's an innovative and interesting way to preview furniture in an AR/MR way. However the scaling and also the reading of the space to place furniture can be rather finicky.

J. B. Oct 18, 2020

When you're scrolling through the furniture options, there's a lot of flickering maybe due to a super low frame rate because it's using AR? Whatever the reason it made me nauseous. There's no search options for the furniture so you just have to scroll and I gave up before I found what I wanted

Works like a charm. Although there are some shadow and lighting bugs with the "poäng series". I appreciate this app, helped me a lot!

W. P. Feb 8, 2019

Great fun! Big objects in small rooms are a bit hard to place. Also, once you add an object, your search query is forgotten. Also search should ignore diacritical charcters: Besta should also result in Bestå products.

Aiv. L. Dec 16, 2019

Even cannot open! p.s. Ok guys! Now I can open and try some furniture, but many of pieces of furniture open so big that only smallest part of it can fit into my screen! Also, it will be very nice to have an option to zoom out/in and move the furniture with the finger touch.
