I'd love to give it more stars, but I really can't justify it. I was fine with paying the 7€ for the English pack, but everything I said just lead me to the 3€ monthly fee, which I think is overpriced for what it is. I honestly thought there would be a lot more to talk with her, because it starts to get repetitive rather quick. The alarm function is very nice though! Overall its a fun little app and I really hope it will be developed further, with lots and lots more vicelines!
App and concept is great. Has cool functions, like the alarm, and would love to use it more. But the cost is way too much to justify. $7 to get the English sucks, but I was willing to pay to support the app. However, a monthly fee just to use the basic function of the app is a disappointment, especially for just one character. I think the special voicelines available for 99¢ is a much better profit opportunity thank limiting it's main function.
Super fun idea that got me hooked instantly, but lots of payment is required for the full experience. Unless you know Japanese, you have to buy the ability to talk in other languages and have subtitles, which costs $6.49 USD. Additionally, the basic conversation dialogue is a monthly subscription of $3.49 USD per month. Without paying, this is essentially a glorified alarm clock with some cute factors to it, but nothing more.
The app is undoubtedly amazing,5 minutes in to using it and i already love it! The interactions are well executed and it feels so genuine. Major downside is that the extra purchases are quite expensive, especially the English pack. Should the prices be made more reasonable and the English pack be made a free option, would the experience be more enjoyable for everyone. Other than that, the app is off to a great start!
TL;DR: The in-app subscription and $6.49 English pack are somewhat bothersome, but the pricing is justified for a relatively new app from a company focused on books. ---Initial App Experience:--- I found this app through Gigguk on YouTube. I was immediately interested since I love anime and I have been trying to learn Japanese. I downloaded the app and hopped right in. Most of the interface was in English and was relatively easy to navigate. I started out with basic Japanese phrases and it worked out well. I then realized after a while when I tried getting more complex in discussion that she couldn't really understand me. Eventually I realized I needed to pay for a subscription in order to unlock the full potential. It was relatively cheap and had a first month discount, so I decided to go for it. Once I paid the subscription fee, it was apparent that her responses were more detailed. I was able to talk quite a bit and have a lot of fun. However, eventually she did start to loop back around and say the same thing, as well as not understanding some sentences. It makes sense, though, because these are all pre-generated sentences. That's part of why my review is 4 stars. ---User Interface and Overall Quality:--- While the User Interface isn't necessarily cutting edge in terms of features or top-tier in design, it was straightforward and performed very well. The whole entire app seemed to perform well, and it definitely gave me the impression that it was designed by a team that cares about quality, as well as having some bit of development experience. A lot of the images and text were crisp and clear, and Megumin herself had smooth movement and was a very high quality. Also, under Overall Quality, her voice playback was actually really good. I realized after a while that it was definitely a speech synthesizer, but it did quite a fantastic job replicating Megumin's voice and not really having any of the stuttery or low-bitrate sound that some robo-voices have. If you listened closely, you could hear that choppiness and low-birate, but only if you listened very closely. ---Paid Features/Items:--- A lot of people are giving 1 star reviews simply because you have to pay $6.49 for the English pack, which I think is really unfair. When you put it in perspective, this company specializes in books and manga, and they likely didn't actually build the app. It was probably done by a studio that works under BOOK WALKER. This is a really unique app from a book-specialized company, so it makes sense that they would ask you $6.49 for English translations. Not only do they have to translate all of the words, but they also need to do speech recognition and make decisions on what to reply with in a whole 'nother language. They probably had to spend a lot of time and money on these features for the English pack and on top of that they likely had no idea how well the app would do in English-speaking countries. It was a huge risk for them to do that. Besides that though, I think it's cool that they offer special items you can purchase, as well as one or two free items. In reality, it's probably a small studio that made this and they need to justify the cost of making it. The more you spend on it, the more they can justify making the app better. --- Conclusion: --- I think the app is really great. It has it's downsides, but it's still a relatively new and somewhat niche app that was likely made by a smaller studio under BOOK WALKER, or maybe was a passion project from the Software team at BOOK WALKER. I personally didn't use the app for more than a couple hours, but I could definitely see myself playing with it sometime in the future. I am hopeful that they continue to improve the app and make the conversations more complex. I really think getting to the point where it's basically an AI would be a huge selling point and a lot of people would be interested. Do I think this app will reach that level? Probably not, but it's nice to have progress in that direction.
It's ok, but I'm probably not going to be able to use it thanks to the english subtitle paywall. Not to mention, voice sets (unlike with Nep & Friends) are paid for by a monthly subscription service. I will give credit where credit is due. Animations are smooth, and I do like the characters models. But unless if you're willing to pay a price for english voices on top of a pack for additional dialouge sets, it's difficult to recommend this app.
It's kind of a fun thing to play with but the fact that you have to pay for English voice recognition and subtitles is a little irritating. What's more is that for unlocking the full voice responses you have to pay a subscription of about $3.50 a month with a first month discount. I feel like at least a little bit cheated this wasn't really advertised. The alarm clock and sleep functions work well though.
It's a good start, but it lacks a bunch of good features. For example it can't answer basic questions with "over 750" voice lines, doesn't have command features (like "please wake me up at 4o clock tomorrow"), you can't turn off the annoying ringtone for the alarm (I'd only like to hear the voice), you need to pay money for things such as more voice lines for the alarm (you can only set 2 lines for starters), the english pack feels useless, the subscription is absolutely ridiculous.
App concept is great, but everything else is pay, pay, pay. Purchased English pack for $11 only to discover that it only has a few basic conversations included. Want more conversations? then you need to pay for a monthly subscription. Without paying more money app is basically a really expensive timer and alarm.
~ I will give this 4**** (for now) as its still in the early stages for the app. ~ some features are pretty cool to use (however) the cash grab is too intense . ~ you - have to pay ($6 USD) to enable the english subtitles and for her to understand you. ~ (currently) you can use the basic settings given and if knowledgeable in - "basic Japanese" - she can communicate with you well in responding. ~ the Alarm setting is good and music is gentle and not too loud or annoying ~ countdown timer is accurate and she starts countdown starting at the 5 sec mark (only) though I would personally prefer it to start at the 10s mark. ~ the stopwatch is the same (however) she counts at the 30s mark (at first) then proceeds to count at each minute reached by the stopwatch ~ the APP however, takes over the mobile device, you will need to swipe downwards to activate the devices menu, so you can see it, then use it, to get back to the device again. ~ all in all (not bad) for a starter, its needs improvements
I thought this may be a unique alarm to mix things up, and while it certainly does that, it's quite ineffective. While it does wake my phone up when the alarm goes off, it only does so long enough for the app to load. As soon as Megumin begins to speak, the screen fades back out, like if I had lingered on my phone's lock screen. I'll rate this higher if this is addressed. Wake Me Up Asuna is a discontinued app, yet does the job better.
I hoped this would finally end my search for a decent replacement for the discontinued Wake Me Up Asuna app after all these years. But The UI is sluggish, the button you hit for the mic flashes to show you've pressed it but only activates the mic ~60% of the time, & the alarm doesn't always trigger even if you leave the app in the background. Lots of other little issues but not enough room here to list. The actual character is drawn well & it's lovely to have the VA for Megumin voice her.
The mic feature isn't working. I'm not getting a response. I have all the permissions on. And I'm running the latest version of my Galaxy S9. Plus my date and time are auto set by my phone so I know it's correct, and I'm connected to my house internet too. Monthly fees aren't totally the best either. Would be fine with just in-app purchases of costumes and such.
Very cool concept. Would love to get it working properly. Unfortunately talking does not seem to work. The English pack is installed. Microphone is tested and working. Microphone permissions are working. But when the mic button is pressed (when it registers) and turns pink, my speech does not register.
Amazing concept, works very well and is definitely one of a kind as far as I know. Sadly, everything is absurdly over priced (10 dollars for a single outfit). You have to buy conversation extensions, skins, backgrounds e.t.c. What is most disappointing is to unlock english conversations, there's an 11 dollar pay wall, essentially keeping most potential players from the game all together. Can always use google translate, but as I said, conversation extensions cost money.
It's a neat idea but it barely functions. Feels like it's in a very early alpha phase. The app sometimes forgets that you purchased something then asks you to repurchase it and this is frustrating. She also barely ever seems to say something that relates to what you say. Just general statement. So it doesn't really feel like you are talking to her at all. Also doesn't help she doesn't have much expressions and one idle animation. Just wait till it's done.
hello there, if you (developer) reading this, i would like to critic about something. first, about the subtitles. the payments are very expensive. especially about the subtitle. please dont make it extremly expensive. this adds to the outfits aswell. atleast make few outfits free or watch ad. we're satisfied even with watching ad. it doesnt give a problem to us. the characters's graphic and voices are fine. but im not satisfied with the payments. thank you for your time.
The app itself is fine, although there are a few minor problems, sometimes the animations can be quite unnatural, and second, the lack of characters, it could be better if they added more, as an example to these characters: Zero Two, Aqua, Nezuko, etc... Still though, the app is good, quite entertaining and interactive for us to enjoy talking to waifus and do other actions, such as telling you the timer, set up a countdown, etc. Hopefully this app is soon complete. Take your time, don't rush.
This is a very well made app. Megumin is perfectly depicted and I love how you can talk to her and she'll respond. However I have one major complaint. I strongly dislike how the paid extra conversations feature is a monthly subscription rather than a one time purchase. That disappointed me greatly. If it was a one time purchase I would have bought it right away, but since it's a monthly subscription I haven't spent any money on it. Please change it to a one time purchase. Your fans will thank you.
Edit: So I contacted them and the issue is that the application doesn't work on a rooted device. Big oof for me. So if your phone is not rooted, do contact them via the support email linked. They replied to within a day so that cleared up quickly. So the app isn't so bad. I've been using it for some time and it's fun having megu wake you up XD. After unrooting my phone that is...
Great animation! Although you may want to add that the English option is hidden behind those "in-app purchases." I would've continued to use the app if both language options were included. It'd even make sense to include English as well as Japanese seeing as how I used the English Play Store to find and download this app. It's one thing to want money for more phrases the character says, but I don't believe you should put an entire language option behind a paywall. But hey, that's just me.
The app is definitely quality. It's basically adding a waifu AI to your phone. The one EXTREME downside to this, downgrading it from a solid 5 stars to 3 is...it costs nearly $7 for English subtitles. That seriously hurts this app. If it were, like, $2.99, I'd say that's a reasonable price, all the better if it were $1.99. I still paid, just so I could...y'know, actually use the app, but still...very greedy.
Pretty amusing so far. I was not a fan of paying 6.50 just to get English subtitles and allowing it to understand me. The thing that bothers me is all the microtransactions here and the biggest one was a freaking MONTHLY Subscription just to have more dialogue. Some of it is justified like giving her different outfits and such but there's an awful lot of nickel and dime just to have any extra dialogue. But more characters will be added and I'm sure changes will come. I'll just wait and see.
To be able to actually do anything outside of read the menu (including understand Megumin) you need to pay nearly $10 CAD. Considering that is 100% of the reason an English speaking audience would use the app (which would also mean buying more outfits, backgrounds and seemingly characters in future) you're shooting yourself in the foot. People give apps one chance and if they can't use it, you can't profit off of them.
It's nice and all but I'm really not interested in buying English subtitles, I might buy an outfit in order to support the product but I can't use it since the voice recognition doesn't work. I also assumed that you could have it as a default voice assistant but you can't so that makes this gimmick completely useless. If the Devs change anything and make this app work paying for I'll update the review
It's a very nice app... Though it's sad that it's ending it's service. For the final update in September, please try to make it that we can make the characters into live interactive wallpapers. Would be nice too if you can make this into some kind of launcher. Welp, it was fun while it lasted. I probably won't delete this now knowing that I might not recover it again.
This app is a nice concept but it is a microtransaction hell. First english should be free. However it is a seperate transaction for each character. And you habe to buy different conversation lengths and different character emotions and clothes. Basically everything in here is locked behind a pay wall. I am surprised there isnt one for vocals. A great improvement would be to make some of these features free... most importantly the english pack.
While most reviews are about english, I wanted to buy basic conversation to support the app but guess what it's a subscription... Really? I'm not spending until you make it one time only. The menu needs a lot of work, I don't mind spending on a cool idea but don't make it a subscription... Is not like the coding took the most, it's the voice actors.
This app is wildly unpolished, for English speakers that is. The subtitles when Megumin speaks are translated, but all the menu screens do not show the English translations! If you want to know what any dialogue says, in English, you will have to use it for an alarm! This affects the efficiency of the app, and even what you purchase! You can't read any purchasable dialogue options in English without buying them! Now it is impossible for me to buy them because I don't know what I'm paying for ;(
The alarm function won't work in background any longer out of the blue. (when out of app and screen is off). It was fine all these while, never touched any settings in my phone system, just left everything on default. Now it stopped working and I've tried the solutions mentioned in the site's FAQ and it still won't work. Any idea? Huawei Honor 8x Android version 10
