Jack's Music Widget

A clean and simple music widget for Android 4.4 KitKat.
Jack's Music Widget should work with any music player that displays controls and album art on the lockscreen.

For more font options, upgrade to the Plus version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jackthakar.musicwidget.plus

Note on Android 5.0: The current version of this app should work fine on Lollipop, but I'm working on a new version that adds additional features by using the new APIs available on 5.0.

Apps Confirmed to Work (v1.1.2 fixes issues with artist not displaying):
• Google Play Music
• Spotify (currently having issues)
• Pandora
• SoundCloud
• Apollo
• Rdio
• iHeartRadio
• DoubleTwist
• TuneIn Radio
• PowerAmp
• Rhapsody
• MixZing
• InfiniTracks
• Pocket Casts
• Songza

Let me know of any others that work and I'll add them to the list.

If you switch between different music players, you don't need to switch widgets. Just stop playing music in one app and start in another and the widget should switch.

Starting in 1.1, there are two widgets: one designed for a 4x1 or 4x2 grid and one with full bleed album art (works best when roughly square).Additionally, there are three themes to choose from (dark, light, and transparent) for the 4x1 widget.

Important:This widget will not work until you go to Security>Notification access in settings and check "Jack's Music Widget"

Unfortunately, the APIs that allow this are new in Kit Kat, so I can't port it back to earlier versions.

Developers: If you want your music app to work with this widget (and other apps which use the new KitKat RemoteController APIs), make sure that you setup a RemoteControlClient and pass the appropriate metadata (this widget uses album art, song title, and artist name).

the app will force close like once a month, and you'll get notified about it. Also when you turn your phone on, the first album cover might be wrong. but other than that, it's the only widget on my Homescreen. 5 stars. edit: it no longer opens YouTube music by default, and it isn't transparent by default anymore

I wouldn't say it's fancy, but it still simply gets the job done, even if this app isn't being updated anymore. There isn't a lot of options, just two widget styles. I'm not actually using them on the homescreen, but somewhere else where it's more convenient to control music besides the today's system notification area.

This app is great when it works. Unfortunately, on a Samsung phone, at least, the album artwork often does not get shown, and occasionally the playback control buttons will not work. It's been this way for over a year at least. Still the design is much better than something like the official Spotify widget, even if the the bugs can't be worked out.

Really amazing app! I'm constantly listening to music and using different apps to play music, so this makes it so much easier! I don't have to dedicate an entire home screen page to music players! It looks pretty, works flawlessly, and makes life that much easier. The only downside is that to get it to constantly update with my music, I had to turn off battery optimization for the app in my phone's settings, but that's not the developer's fault, and it's easy enough to fix. Abosutely love it!

Excellent idea and works very well. Needs a blacklist or a whitelist. Things like webpage or news feed videos keep hijacking the widget. Clicking the widget itself to open the default app should be less clunky: sometimes it opens the default; sometimes it opens the last used, even hours after playback has stopped. Should have an option to open the app currently in use, and if media is not being played, should then open the default.

UNINSTALLED! Simply did not work. It looked good; I installed it because it's transparent, and the native widget for Android Music does not give such options; it shows the album art, and only when that's available. But after placing the widget on the home page and setting it up to use Music as the default music player (it's the only active one on my phone), it was non functional; pushing buttons did nothing.

I got a OnePlus 6t back in February, and I originally used this widget on my S7, so when I started moving stuff over, this was the one thing that didn't work. Just today I got a system update, I'm not sure if it was the update, or the software just becoming comparable, but it works again and I'm very happy it does. The other ones I had found did not work as well, or just didn't work. So, thank you for making this compatible with the OnePlus 6t!

Finally found a decent widget app for Spotify. The default is boring and never matches my phones layout and aesthetic. The only complaint would be; I wish it had options to change the shape, like have rounded corners as an option, and also sometimes the widget's colour won't really match the album art, but that's only a minor complaint.

For some reason when changing songs on spotify (the only app I use), the song info and album art won't change with it. It plays the next song but stays on the previous songs info unless I change the widget size which seemingly refreshes it. somewhat annoying and pointless with this issue. Using a note 9 and any help would be great.

This is the best music widget for Android :-) !It is functional, light weight and soooo pretty. You can set a default app, like Spotify, so you can open it by tapping the widget, but it will switch automatically if you open another player, so you don't need a separate widget for each player you may have. Also it can integrates perfectly with your wallpaper with a translucid background , and it supports dark mode as well. among other features.

All I want is a simple Spotify widget. This app's widget will flash album art momentarily on startup and/or after selecting a different album, but then it disappears and doesn't fix itself. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, have restarted my device too. Nothing fixes this issue. The buttons work well and Spotify opens upon tapping the widget which is a positive. But when album art refuses to stick around longer than 2 seconds upon selecting a new artist, it's unbelievably frustrating.

edit: as of Pie update, it stopped working. no longer refreshes and buttons rarely work. Galaxy S8. works fine, but you really should be able to lock a certain player/app. (ex: having it work with only Play Music, even if there's a YouTube video paused in the background) Really simple to do, will change to 5 stars after this is fixed.

It has a great selection of services to use, even the radio station from the town i live in. Crazy. But like other reviews have said , it gets stuck on the artwork, not only that, turning the artwork off in the setting does nothing. I'll keep it installed hoping for an update and I'll change my review to 5 stars if it does. ****UPDATE****Everything seems to be working now. I dont know why because i had tried removing the widget and restarting the app, as well as the phone to no avail.

Partially stopped working on Android 10: buttons are responsive, but if I check the "Display Album Name in Widget"-box in the settings, then album art and text in the widget get stuck no matter how many times you switch between songs/players (Samsung Note 9, One UI 2.5). I currently only check the song/artist to be shown in the widget, and it works like that, at least. Though I do hope to be back using Ubiquity fully one day though. No other widget is quite as versatile with compatible players.

Really awesome. Really useful, specially given that spotify just removed widgets. Can open spotify on tap, resume play even when spotify is closed (doesn't show album art when spotify closed ofcourse) and widget can be also expanded. Really helpful for me. Just can't see last played song when closed, but that is ofc understandable given the implementation. And spotify widget anyway went out of sync in those cases. So helpful giveb that spotify just removed one of the basic things you expect.

You are my savior! Spotify removed its widged feature, but there you were! Returning to me the feature that I ve been using all the time, without which I would have been forced to navigate spotify's confusing menus more than I would like to. 5 stars, despite the app not being particularly reliable.

By far the simplest, best looking and overall great music widget. I've tried all the other ones out there with good reviews and none come close to this one. It. Just. works!

Best app ever - does what it says on the tin. Fantastic tool when you have multiple music players such as Sonos, Spotify, tidal etc. Great for controlling from home screen.

R. R. Jan 30, 2019

THIS is what i've been searching for. The Play store images don't show it, but the widget has both clear and tinted backgrounds. Controls whichever app is currently playing music, with a default set of nothing is open. Even works in the Samsung lockscreen! How is this free?

Customization options are fantastic, however the scale and positioning relative to other icons is horrid. The widget itself will always look out of place (play/pause controls in particular) on an android due to very poor alignment with other screen icons and elements.

Cal. Oct 5, 2019

Overall it's great and I'm glad there's a transparent and determined from the cover art option but I think for me it needs more customization options. it's what I want exactly just minus the additional customization I guess. I love it very much nonetheless thank you!

At first I was excited about this app. I was looking to add a widget to the KEXP app. This seemed to be the solution. But I could not get it to keep that app as the default app. With no other music app playing, tapping on the widget opens the Amazon Music app. Also, it "holds" the Poweramp app much of the time, even after that app is closed. If there was a way to "lock" the widget to a specific app, it would help.

Spotify made the idiotic decison to do away with having a widget. Found this. Not only does it work well but it's much better than the one Spotify had. Able to customize the size and colors of the widget to match the album art. Kudos dev. Works great so far.

Even though the app is pretty much abandoned, it still does its job pretty well. It does have some bugs (like sometimes it gets stuck and doesn't update which song is playing), though they're very few and far between.

Nice Work with the multi app support, although sometime it doesn't sync properly. Nevermind with that as this is probably the only widget in playstore to work as it says! One suggestion though, if we could customize the widget layout to have rounded corners. That would be great! Thank you.

Lin. N. Mar 12, 2020

I adored this when it worked smoothly. Now despite being set to open Spotify by default and even when it shows a Spotify song, tapping the album cover art consistently opens Castbox. I'm not sure whether the problem is with this widget or Castbox but it's still pretty darn frustrating.

Spotify had two widgets on my phone and the one I used disappeared for some reason, and the sole one remaining was terrible. I found this app and it's very clean, lightweight and easy to use. I love the 2x2 widget. Thank you for your work, 5 stars!

It's a great app and I love using it, but sometimes it would either get stuck, th album cover won't show up or become unresponsive to the point it stops working. I'm using a Moto e5 plus, and I would love to continue using this wonderful app if you would fix those minor problems
