Drops connection after a few minutes unless you just leave the app up, and doesn't notify that the connection was dropped or lost so you don't get alerted when the water is heated or your food is done unless you go back in and check manually. Also, I can't even login. I created an account using Facebook authentication but it uses an embedded browser to authenticate which Facebook disables for security reasons. So I'm locked out. The hardware is wonderful. The app is such a letdown functionally
Totally broken if you created an account with Facebook. The app isn't in compliance with Facebook login policies so that's blocked. You also can't reset or change your password if you had a fb account hooked up. I couldn't even register a new account because it's a duplicate email.
Latest update was a mess. Had to find my password, relogin, then restart it several times to get my joule to connect with my phone. I love my joule but hate all the signing in and hoops I have to jump through to get it to work. Once your updates leaves this one useless I'm going to a more user friendly one.
😁 First I love the small compactness of it. It makes traveling so easy. I bring the Joule unit, container, lid, seasonings and plastic bags with me on trips. I set it up at the hotel or resort using Bluetooth and take off having fun. I come back to a wonderfully cooked tri-tip or stake, sear it in a pan and throw a salad together and done. What an amazing meal. 😬 The bad news: the app is very basic. It works but no extras. There is no function to set a later time for it to start automatically...
So far so good! Probably one of those apps where most of the people using it have good experiences and never feel too compelled to leave a review. I was really skeptical about liking this. I thought the app would be intrusive, unnecessary, and prevent me from having manual control that I have come to appreciate in an increasingly automated world. But no! You can control it manually too! Cool little recipes as well. Trust the recommended temps. 14# is fine for chicken if held long enough
Bluetooth connection doesn't work after latest update. Foodtruck owners beware.
I love this device (white) and the app works quite well. Not sure why everyone else is having problems but I can say it is a 5 star rating for me. I tried 5 different manufacturers of immersion blenders and although this one was by far the priciest, it was well worthwhile the extra money spent. Only one wish that on the app, pre programmed recipes should have a button to opt for a custom temperature if you want one and still be cooking under the canned recipe. Just a thought.
The device frequently fails to connect to Bluetooth or wifi. It needs to be reset constantly, it often results in undercooked food in spite of correct settings and its own temperature detection does not match with other thermometers. Support take 3+ days and the answer is usually some variation of 'its probably your fault, not ours.' (it's theirs). As typing this it disconnected for the 5th time, with a stable access point 5 feet away with line of sight unobstructed. Avoid this product.
The update made it worse trying to start it right now and not working again
Great hardware meets amateur software. This is one of the most unreliable hardware interaction apps I have used. It works as expected about 30% of the time. The other times you have to restart it, reinstall it, toggle wifi, move the phone right next to the device, rinse and repeat. I have written networking apps before, it should not be this hard in 2020. When it works its, decent, when it doesn't work, and you are in the middle of complicated food prep, you want to throw it out the window.
Really cool app and device, with some kinks to work out. The recipes are easy to follow and it's straightforward to set it manually. I have a captive portal at home, so WiFi isn't easy to connect to & it's always been choppy when I didn't have this problem. The latest update seems to keep feeding me unnecessary updates I have to cancel out of repeatedly as well. I thoroughly enjoy it, but being app-dependent can get in the way sometimes.
A fantastic app... When it works. App is littered with bugs that have consequences ranging from minor annoyances to completely over cooking your food. 1) the 'start' button doesn't work half the time after the water is warmed up and I put my food in, I have to close the app and restart it to start the timer 2) I usually don't get the notifications on time (if at all). There's been multiple times where I've opened the app and THEN it gives me a notification 'your food is ready!' 3) more bugs...
This app is awesome, especially for us beginners. I really appreciate how it gives a recommended temperature and time, based upon the thickness of the meat and how done you want it to be. I see some are having issues staying connected to the device. I had the same problem with a wifi garage door opener. The problem was not with the device, it was with my network settings. To solve it, I established a connection to the device. While connected to it, I logged into the router and told it to reserve the IP address for the device that it was currently using.
I have had my device for a year. I use an Android phone to control unit. Everything had been working over WIFI previously. App update made my device only usable in Bluetooth. It has no means to troubleshoot the network interface. Because the app is the ONLY way to interact with the unit I feel I have been let down by the company. You would think they would test an app on all systems before release.
Great recipes, horrible connection. Joule is strictly wireless/bluetooth, great concept only when it works. My experience has been that you can connect to the Joule when it is not operational, but once temperature is set and your phone turns off and disconnects, you will no longer be able to connect to start the timer. The only way you can reconnect is by pulling the plug and plugging back in, which isn't the best for electronics.
Complete garbage. It takes me at least 10 minutes of rebooting the Joule, my phone, etc. to start the device. I would not recommend this device over some $65 models from other companies. The app complains about disconnected WiFi when I only use Bluetooth to connect. I only want to use Bluetooth. It also complains if you unplug it without stopping it from the app. Don't bother me with extra pop-ups. Today, I experienced the same error messages maybe 5 or 6 times in a row. Garbage.
Update 2/5: Still does not connect seamlessly to wifi as it used to. Save your money. Unreliable wifi connection. Sometimes it works flawlessly. Sometimes it has trouble connecting to wifi. Really strange. Makes me wish I'd gone with a model I can operate from the heater vs. the phone. This is highly annoying. Update 1-7-21:. Clunky best describes wifi connectivity. Sometimes it works flawlessly. Other times not so much. I crave a simpler interface. I've learned my lesson.
worked great the first time. then I let it update the firmware and I couldnt connect to it. this doesn't have a way to control when not connected via wifi or bluetooth. it was basically useless without a connection. Update: after about an hour of trying different things and uninstalling everything and starting over it seams to be working again. if this was an anomaly I will update again later. but this much work to cook puts it at 3 stars. this can't be the best brand!
The app usually works well, but some of the oversights are egregious. They need to actually notify me of errors when they happen instead of silently shutting off the unit. Wifi connectivity has also proven unreliable at times. Another quality of life suggestion would be to have the option for the timer to sit in my notification bar with the current time and temp.
I've been using both the hardware (joules circulator) and the software (this app) for a while now and I honestly have had no complaints over the years. I wish they'd add a feature for me to start cooking at a specific preset time, but everything they promised me will work does work well. I only use it at home with WiFi and Bluetooth though so I'm not familiar with other situations.
