Justin's strategy for teaching is superb -- motivating, inspiring, organized, and concise. He provides an amazingly effective Foundation and encourages students to learn songs.. real songs! He truly understands the value a beginner probably has in learning songs: his app completely rekindled my interest in pursuing guitar! Not only is there a plethora of songs to choose from, but the app also has 'chord anticipation', a strumming pattern guide, and even a song Tempo adjustment! Kudos to Justin!
had issues with my Samsung Tablet S4, app did not load, but it seems to work again now after having reset my tablet user. good app, will give 4 stars when it syncs with the web page and 5 stars when it supports AI-based recognition of how I am playing my songs. Justin's work/videos however merit 10 stars!
Worth the investment for any player Buy this for no other reason than the song catalogue is MASSIVE and it is more fun than a metronome. Cowboy chords aren't difficult for an intermediate player but if you want to incorporate this into some other practice schedule it will improve your rhythm and teach you some patterns
This app got me back into guitar finally and I'm having so much fun and progressing so quickly. When he said 20 mins of practice a day would be good to make solid progress, I thought I'd never have the time but now I find myself going on the app every day and when I finish, 30, 40 minutes have passed like nothing. Also, I love that a subscription is optional. I will happily support this amazing app financially as soon as i have the money but right now i don't so I'm happy i still get to use it.
Really easy to learn...just been playing for the last 6 weeks and I can see my progress. It is exciting at the end of each module and to see how fluent changing chords are now. If you do what Justin says and he makes things easier. Excellent app would recommend anymore wanting to learn the guitar.
Really really good. I had a tutor for a while and was struggling with some of the music and getting time to book lessons etc. This is so much easier. A spare 30 mins here or there and just jump on and either advance in module or just jam with songs. It's really enjoyable. I have played every day for over a month now. Feel like things are starting to click . Definitely worth a try. Pay for 1 month and I bet you won't cancel your subscription!
Good for beginners and early intermediates for playing along in time and practicing strumming patterns. Some songs can be a bit tricky and fast, but you can slow them down and speed up when ready. Good set of features. Songs don't always sound as close to the original as you might want (minor).
Just amazing! Been using the app for 2 months now alongside the free website and the yt videos. All together makes for a perfect learning experience and the app really provides the otherwise missing feeling of playing with "others" and in time. Recommend highly!!!
12-21-2021. App isn't working at all today. Uninstalled and reinstalled and it doesn't work. Gets stuck at the fourth screen. So frustrating that I am thinking of changing instructors! I like Justin but this app is giving me a bad taste. 4-30-2022. App working again. When it works it's great and I love the way Justin teaches.
Still learning and playing with the app. So far it's been great!! Does everything it is suppose to do. Had an issue with it not rotating on the screen, restart of the phone fixed that! Keep it in mind!
I've started playing the guitar again after 11 years, and this app has helped more than my old music teacher. I would suggest putting up more songs and also tablature not just chords, for those of us who read tab.
I am a beginner and had no experience playing guitar. It was overwhelming to figure out where to begin, but I am SO GLAD I chose to start here. Justin is so down to earth, and you can tell he knows the struggles you are going through, and makes you feel better about them. He knows what will trip you up in the beginning, and reassures you that it's okay and just part of the learning experience. Sometimes it feels like it is actually a personal one-on-one lesson. Amazing experience.
This app is very well constructed and gives a smooth entry to the basics of guitar playing. However, I was quite disappointed at how limited the app was being $15 a month. For someone with an intermediate background playing guitar, it was entirely lacking on certain playstyles and has no emphasis on scales or learning the notes of the fretboard and how they relate to eachother. My favourite playing style is fingerpicking and this app has a heavy focus on chords, strumming and using a pick.
UPDATE: I had very high hopes for this new interface, and in all honesty it seems to work fine on my Android tablet (thus the 2 stars). Unfortunately, this new interface never worked properly on my Chromebook (also Android OS) and the updates have made it worse. Now it just hangs at the intro screen. I want to use my larger screen, or get an explanation as to why I can't. No response from support requests though. Too bad, he really is a great teacher.
I think Justin has an excellent teaching style which makes you want to practice. He constantly reminds you that making mistakes is only human and that you shouldn't expect to be able to play stuff that takes weeks or months to learn only a few days/weeks into the course. I have just finished Module 1 after two weeks, doing 20 mins a day, 5 days in 7. I'm nearly at the stage where my fingertips aren't hurting, so my practice sessions will soon be more enjoyable. I definitely recommend this app.
Justin has a very assuring voice and encouraging tone, is easy to understand each lesson. Some feedback: whenever a chord/riff is played, would be great to have images showing the fret, lines and finger numbers. Those who don't need it can ignore and will be a great for those who want it. Another is how there should be different payment plans, I'm very busy with work I access lessons only once or twice a week and so a monthly/yearly subscription is not ideal, thus the 4 stars. Otherwise, great!
Sorry to say guys the old app was far better, I'm struggling to use the new one. Lots of the songs I used to have favourited have changed and user wise it's over complicated. The strumming patterns are hard to follow. I kept an open mind and persevered as thought it was just because it was what I was used to but it just isn't working for me. I don't think I would have been able to learn with this app.
I bought two of Justin's books and find I like using them better. Love Justin. Hands down I'm learning!I've also been taking the free lessons on his site and doing the practice there too as he has accompanied videos. I really don't enjoy using the songs in the app much. If they were actual tabs to switch to I think I'd up it to a 5 star. I get the point of the chords being easier for a beginner and rhythm being important. Likely going to give ultimate guitar pro a try for the interactive tabs.
Given Up With This App Have tried a number of times to get on with it. But it always ends in frustration. The tempo's are very difficult to grasp. They seem to bear no relation to the song. As a learning tool the tempo's need to be clearer so you can strum properly. Strumming is poorly taught and in a much too mechanical way - up down, down up down etc. It should be taught as a naturally intuitive function. Sorry Justin, the rest is excellent.
Justin is very open and honest with things such as finger pain and finger placement which both are somewhat hard to deal with. But it is very simple to read and understand once the music starts. I like the exercises and his notes not to practice an hour or two at one time. My brother plays the guitar and has for the last 30 years and I asked him what he thought about the app once he looked at it. He said the man is legit! And that is a very good app to learn about. :-) therefore five stars!!
The customer service with this app is horrible. I contacted them with an issue where the app hangs for a very long time before opening on the Samsung Galaxy tablet. They contacted me back to ask more information about which tablet I use. I told them. And they have not contacted me since. It's been like a month. After a week of no response I contacted them again asking for help and I got no response. Tablet works perfect. No issues with any other apps. Only this one.
The teaching itself is good and Justin is a great teacher but this app is pretty terrible, they updated the UI recently and it crashes most of the time now when trying to play a song. Probably an issue with the video player, it happens during lessons too but not as much. It would be a 5 star review if this wasn't happening, I would've put lower than 3 because the error frequency is huge but I like Justin's teaching
Hey, I tried to update my previous bad review, but it won't let me. I absolutely adore Justin and his methods and hoped my daughter would as well. Unfortunately not and during the trial, I was charged for the year. I contacted support and they immediately helped me out. If you have a problem, use the "Contact us" in the app. The app is amazing, though a family subscription/ log in option would have been useful and saved me some trouble.❤️.
Edit: The App improved a lot more and I having fun learning again! If you could match the progress in the app with the website and use the songs(if you have an app subscription), that would be awesome! Old review: I don't know...I find the new app a little bit confusing. The old app felt better streamlined. And I find it personally harder to play along with the songs now. Maybe i`m just bad idk.
Great app, but lacks some basic features to make this app much more user friendly. Needs "add new playlist" so you can have several lists of songs to practice. Needs "non stop" play mode so you can spend the entire time practicing, instead of scrolling through songs. Needs dark theme option. For "non stop", an option to have the strum pattern shown for 5 seconds before the song countdown begins so you don't have to touch anything.Being able to save songs for offline use would be fantastic.
