Well, you're in luck! Kana Mind is a completely free educational game that helps you practice recognizing the symbols used in Katakana and Hiragana, the first two alphabet styles used in the Japanese language.
But it is not a simple matching or "flash card" game! It uses an intelligent, adaptive memorization algorithm focused on teaching the character combinations, and measuring the player's success with each pair. Love this app! It's simple and gets the job done. I wish there was one that's fully editable for vocabulary and whatnot where the app will create the multiple choice as well. Not even sure if that's possible! :)
Simple and effective. I have been using a lot of apps that aim to teach Japanese writing. This one for kana is the best. The repetitive nature of the set up really drills the symbols home.
A highly efficient starter app for reading kana. Doesn't clog my old phone, easy to use. Eventually you'll want to learn to write it and kanji as well. Most Japanese names, places, events, etc use kanji. Still you definitely need to recognize kana before you learn kanji so I recommend this app for that.
Sometimes less is more. Not a lot of bells and whistles, just straightforward drilling, over and over. And no ads, which are the last thing I want to see when trying to learn something.
It's a fine app. The only thing lacking are the corresponding fonetics for each Kana and maybe some lite vocabulary exercises. Otherwise, this is a great free app
it's good for memorizing kana, that's what it's for and it's unreliable to try to use an app for writing. i wouldn't trust an app to teach me alphabet writing. it does exactly what it says it does, and graphics and animations are well done.
Simply the best app out there to learn Kana (: Highly recommend to anyone starting to learn Japanese. This was my first and only app to learn Kana and it was very effective.
This app is great, imo better that some of the other apps on here. It gives you the five to hide the answers until you are ready to pick from them, that's all I've ever wanted! Hiragana and Katakana at your own pace.
Very good app. I put it to great use for learning and then retaining. Whether you only want to read kana, or will pick up handwriting later, this is the app for you.

There's a glitch where if I pick from "Practice what I know", it shows that I started and ended on the same day. Please fix

Very pleasant to use without any ads.
I choose write kana, then I must follow each 'next', at the end no write kana quiz but just the same learn to read kana! How come? Characters we haven't learned yet, we must guess which one because we didn't learn it yet I wish (hope) that you might create Kanji among it 🙏🙏

Perfect test for learn katagana and hiragana
Great app. Well done. Very useful learning tool. I'd like the option to select individual kana to learn. Some are a lot harder than others to learn. Also I'd like to be able to be shown what kana I am weakest at. This could be assessed by analysing mistakes and also how long it take to choose a correct answer.
This app works very well. It does just what it says. It's easy to use and makes learning fast. If that's not enough, the app is totally free with no adds.

Very good app! For me to learn Hiragana & Katakana in a simple app at my own pace, and test myself on learned material has been immensely helpful. The app gives you available options so you can tailor your study session more specifically. I like that until I uninstall the app, it cumulatively keeps a record of what I select for study; as well as my test scores on whatever I tested. It's nice that one can close the app and later pick up where you left off. It's design is smart and effective!!!
